Scope and Content

The Green Mountain Club Archives span the years 1910 through 1998. The Archives are stored in twenty-three record storage boxes, five archival document boxes, and five flat file folders; they occupy 26.5 linear feet of shelf space. The records are divided into seven series: club records, section records, subject files, End-to- End reports, Guide Books of the Long Trail, The Long Trail News, and maps.

The Green Mountain Club (GMC) was founded in 1910 largely upon the initiative of James P. Taylor (1872-1949). Taylor had been assistant principal of Academy in Saxtons River where he took students on hiking excursions in the . He was discouraged by the lack of suitable trails and shelters and vowed to do something about it. He contacted many prominent Vermonters and convinced them that there was a place in Vermont for a hiking club to build and maintain trails and shelters in the state. On March 11, 1910, the Green Mountain Club was formally organized with twenty-three members and a broad vision, "to make the Vermont Mountains play a larger part in the life of the people."

There were a number of influential Club members during those early years: Roy O. Buchanan (1881-1977), Herbert Wheaton Congdon (1876-1965), C. P. Cooper, Clarence P. Cowles (1875-1963), Theron S. Dean (1877-1946), Will S. Monroe (1863- 1939), Louis J. Paris, Mortimer Robinson Proctor (1889-1968), Louis B. Puffer (1886- 1951), and Willis M. Ross.

From the beginning the Club undertook the huge project of building a trail from the border to Canada along the crest of the Green Mountains. The project was finally completed in 1930, and the Long Trail remains the major focus of the Club. In 1960 the Vermont General Assembly, by joint resolution, officially recognized the Club's role as the "founder, sponsor, defender, and protector" of the Long Trail system. The gigantic task of maintaining the system is carried out by volunteers, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, and the U.S. Forest Service, supplemented by the paid labor of the Long Trail Patrol founded in 1929.

The Club is organized into sections by geographic regions, most in Vermont, but some out-of-state as well, and an at-large category of membership for those who prefer not to affiliate with a section. The sections sponsor hikes and excursions and also maintain certain portions of the Long Trail system. An annual Intersectional gathering provides the opportunity for members from all sections to join in an outdoor setting during August. Sections publish calendars of events and newsletters to keep their members informed. One of the larger gatherings of the Club occurred in 1985 on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

The Club is governed by a board of directors elected from the membership. Annual meetings are held in the spring with quarterly meetings of the trustees. Members are kept advised of Club activities by The Long Trail News, published four times a year. The Club's first headquarters were in Rutland; they then moved to Montpelier about 1973; and in 1992 moved to buildings and land purchased by the Club in Waterbury Center.

Since 1943 records have been kept for End-to-Enders, i.e., those who have hiked the entire distance of the trail. One of the more famous landmarks along the trail was the Long Trail Lodge at which served as an informal hiking headquarters for the Club from 1925 until it was sold in 1955. In 1986 the Long Trail Protection Fund was established to provide money to buy land to protect the trail corridor.

In 1998, the Club has about 8,000 members who support the Long Trail system consisting of 270 miles of main trail and about 175 miles of side trails. In addition, the Club has built and maintains 70 shelters along the main trail.

For a more detailed history of the Club see Jane and Will Curtis, Green Mountain Adventure, Vermont's Long Trail: An Illustrated History (Montpelier, Vt .: The Green Mountain Club, 1985) (VHS call number 917.43 G824) and Reidun D. Nuquist, “The Founding of the Green Mountain Club, 1910,” Vermont History News, Vol. 36, No. 3. (May – June 1985), pp. 60–65 (VHS call number 974.30 V591n). Another valuable reference to the Club in relation to a general account of hiking in the northeastern U.S. may be found in Laura and Guy Waterman, Forest and Crag (Boston: Appalachian Mountain Club, 1989); see particularly chapter 35, "The Long Trail," pp. 351–373 (VHS call number 917.4 W313).

Most of the records of the Green Mountain Club were officially transferred to the library of the Vermont Historical Society in several installments beginning April 1974.

Related Collections

Several collections of personal papers at the Vermont Historical Society have material relating to the Green Mountain Club. See the following: Eugene L. Bamforth Papers (Doc 227), Theron S. Dean Papers (MSA 55 & 56), Robert L. Hagerman Papers (Doc 233–234, 295, MSA 53), Will S. Monroe Papers (Doc 86), and James P. Taylor Papers (Doc T 1–13). See also the VHS card catalog under the names of Hagerman, Monroe, and Taylor.

The photograph and postcard collections at the VHS Library also have significant numbers of images. See under headings Green Mountain Club and SP–Hiking & Camping.

There are several broadsides about the Club and Long Trail in the VHS Library Broadside Collection under the heading Long Trail.

The VHS Library’s uncataloged pamphlet file has items filed under Green Mountain Club, Green Mountain Club – Place names, and Long Trail.

The VHS Museum has a trail sign for Mt. Mansfield (1989.1.1) and Taft Lodge welcome sign (1989.1.2).

The University of Vermont, Bailey/Howe Library, in Burlington has the papers of Herbert W. Congdon and Clarence P. Cowles as well as a collection of nearly 700 glass lantern slides, most of which are tinted. These slides were made or collected by Theron S. Dean about 1915-1925 and depict scenes of the Long Trail.

Other portions of the records of the Green Mountain Club may be at local historical societies or libraries. For example, the Register of the Bromley Lodge, 1937- 38, maintained by the Manchester Section, is held by the Manchester Historical Society.

Green Mountain Club headquarters have additional archival documents and artifacts as well as an extensive photo collection. Write to the Club at RR 1, Box 650, Waterbury Center, Vt. 05677; or call (802) 244-7037.

Organization of the Records

The Green Mountain Club Archives are organized in seven series : I. Club Records (Doc 182 & 183) II. Section Records (Doc 184, 185, 301) III. Subject Files (Doc 225 & 226, Doc 228 & 229, MSA 64) IV. Long Trail End-to-End Reports, 1943-1997 (Doc 230, 231, 292, 293, 294, 334; index in Doc 300) V. Guide Books of the Long Trail (MSA 65) VI. The Long Trail News (Doc 241) VII. Maps (Flat File Drawers)

I. Club Records, 1910–75 (Doc 182, 183)

The records are arranged chronologically commencing with the minutes of the first annual meeting on March 11, 1910. The first financial reports (1916–18) are in Doc 182, Folder 8 and are included irregularly thereafter. Minutes of the Trustees meetings are also included; the first is 1918 (Doc 182, Folder 9) and appear irregularly thereafter. Occasional correspondence related to annual meetings and finances as well as by-law revisions, reports of the officers, and membership lists appear irregularly.

Minutes of the earliest annual meetings were photocopied from the Secretary's notebook. The original notebook is presumably at Club headquarters

Records for the years 1910–40 are in Doc 182; records from 1941–75 are in Doc 183. There are no records for 1912 and 1913 and only agendas for the 1914 and 1915

Vermont Historical Society • Barre 05641-4209 Green Mountain Club Records Page 4 annual meetings. During these early years the Club fell on hard times when the membership disagreed on issues affecting the Long Trail.

II. Section Records (Doc 184, 185, 301)

The Section folders are arranged alphabetically by the name of the section when the records were created; any name changes have been disregarded.

Active and inactive Sections are interfiled. Barre to Jay Sections are in Doc 184; the Killington Section is in Doc 301; and Lake Pleiad to Worcester Sections are in Doc 185.

The type and amount of material for each Section varies widely. The following arrangement has been adopted, however, if the amount of material within a Section file warrants it: annual reports, membership lists, newsletters, correspondence, and history.

III. Subject Files (Doc 225, 226, 228, 229, MSA 64)

This series contains material which does not fit into any other. It includes various subjects, proper names, and place names arranged in one alphabetical sequence. Material spans the period 1910 to 1989, with the bulk from the period 1910 to 1970s.

Included in this series are papers accumulated by several prominent members of the Club often from the years of their presidency. Among them are:

• Clarence P. Cowles Papers (Doc 225, Folders 14–22) • Roy O. Buchanan Papers (Doc 225, Folder 2) • Arthur Koerber Papers (Doc 226, Folders 1–3) • John Nuffort Papers (Doc 226, Folders 21–36 and Doc 228, Folders 1–59) • George Pearlstein Papers (Doc 229, Folders 1–17) • James P. Taylor Papers (Doc 229, Folder 48)

Larger subjects in this series (more than three folders) include:

• Clarendon Gorge Bridge (Doc 225, Folders 5–13, 1973–1974) Materials include correspondence, plans and sketches, financial records, and the dedication ceremony. • Inquiries (Doc 225, Folders 31–38) These are letters of inquiry to the Club between 1965–1972; often no copy of the reply is included. • Long Trail Lodge (Doc 226, Folders 9–14) These consist, for the most part, of financial records for 1928; although Folder 12 includes pamphlets and information about the Lodge from 1923–1937. • Public Information Committee (Doc 229, Folders 22–26, 1978–1983) The Committee worked on a slide show which was never completed. The folders include memoranda and correspondence as well as several proposed versions of the script.

• 75th Anniversary of the Club, May 25, 1985 (Doc 229, Folders 30–44) This is a very complete record of the committee which planned the event at Bolton Valley Resort. • Clippings, mostly from newspapers which span the period 1910–1988, are located in MSA 64, Folders 1–10. Additional clippings may be found in Doc 229, Folder 15 (Clarence P. Cowles Papers) and Doc 229, Folder 35 (75th Anniversary) . In addition, see Taylor, James P. Clippings regarding the Green Mountain Club, gathered and text by J. P. Taylor from May 1916 thru May 1922. (VHS call number Folio * X974.3 G824t) • Most original photographs have been removed from the subject files and replaced by photocopies. The originals are now in the VHS photograph collection (F–GMC and F–SP–Hiking). Original photographs of the construction and dedication of the Clarendon Gorge Bridge, however, have been retained in Doc 225, Folder 13. • Diaries and records of hikes on the Long Trail, either pre-dating the existence of the End-to-End reports, or shorter hikes, may be found in Long Trail Itineraries, 1909–1969, Doc 226, Folders 6 & 7. Official End-to-End reports and indexes are in Series IV. Doc 225, Folder 24, however, contains correspondence about the End-to-End reports and a chronological list of hikers, 1943–1969 and 1982–1983. • Much publicity was accorded "Three Musketeers" who were the first three women to hike the Long Trail in 1927. See Doc 229, Folder 49. • History of the Club may be found in Doc 225, Folders 29 & 30, Doc 228, Folder 9, and Doc 229, Folder 37. • Brochures, pamphlets, etc. about the Club may be found in Doc 229, Folder 27. Other publications about the Long Trail are in Doc 226, Folder 8; about the Long Trail Lodge, Doc 226, Folder 12; press releases are in Doc 229, Folder 21; miscellany are in Doc 229, Folder 27.

IV. End-to-End reports, 1943-1992 (Doc 230-231, 292-293, 294, 300, 334)

These reports were written by people who have hiked the entire distance of the Long Trail, in one trip or many, in one year or several.

The Club began keeping official records of these achievements in 1943 by assigning code numbers consisting of the year in which the report was submitted, another number showing the sequence during the year, and a third number which indicates where the report stands in the grand total. For example, the first report is numbered 1943–1–1.

While some of the reports are rather brief, a sizeable proportion are quite detailed and provide many insights about problems encountered and satisfactions received by the hikers on their journeys.

A chronological list of the End-to-End hikers for the years 1943–1969 and 1983– 1983 is in Doc 230, Folder 0. An alphabetical card index by hiker name is in Doc 300. See also Doc 225, Folder 24 for correspondence and memoranda relating to End-to-End.

For other hiking reports see Doc 226, Folder 6 entitled, Long Trail Itineraries.

V. Guide Books of the Long Trail (MSA 65)

The first Guide Book of the Long Trail was published in 1917 and revisions have been issued as follows: 1920, 1921, 1922, 1924 (also corrected to 1926) 1928, 1930, 1932, 1935, 1937, 1940, 1947, 1951, 1956, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1968, 1971, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1990.

About 1960 the Club began publishing updates but rather than calling them new editions they were called new printings. In other words, these new printings contain additional information which is contrary to usual publishing practice. This is noted here to avoid possible confusion.

The VHS Library has a set of Guide Books on open shelves (VHS call number (917.43 G82) The archive also includes a set in MSA 65.

VI. The Long Trail News (Doc 241)

From 1910 until 1913 information about Club activities was published sporadically in The Vermonter, (VHS call number 974.30 V598) under the heading of "Green Mountain Club Notes."

In December 1922 the Club began to publish its own journal called Green Mountain News. This continued until December 1925 when the title was changed to The Long Trail News. For more information about this publication see Doc 226, Folder 16.

The Vermont Historical Society has a complete file of this journal on open shelves (VHS call number X974.3 G824g) The archive also includes a set in Doc 241.

VII. Maps (Flat File Drawers)

Maps have been an integral part of the publishing program of the Club since the early years. Most are found in the Guide Book of the Long Trail.

The VHS Library also has cataloged maps which may be found by searching the card catalog under the heading Green Mountain Club – Long Trail – Maps.

The archives includes a number of unique manuscript maps as well as annotated published maps and sundry others. This collection is located in the flat file drawers on the main floor of the VHS Library stored in folders and organized by size.
