Four easy steps to successful Mycotaxon publication in 2012 Prospective Mycotaxon authors should download instructions PDF, review and submission forms, and other helpful templates by clicking the ‘file download page’ link on our Instructions to Authors page before preparing their manuscript. Below is a summary of our ‘4-step’ publication process. 1—Peer review: Email formatted text and illustration files with a 2012 Mycotaxon Reviewer Comments Form to 2–3 experts for peer review. Authors should (i) ask peer reviewers to return revisions and comment forms to both authors and Editor- in-Chief and (ii) revise the files according to reviewer suggestions before sending text files to the Nomenclature Editor for nomenclatural review. 2—Nomenclatural review: Email text files (with tables & captions but no artwork) to the Nomenclature Editor for accession and pre-submission review. The Email message MUST include ‘Mycotaxon’ on the subject line and all peer reviewer names+Email addresses in the message. The Nomenclature Editor will assign accession numbers and return annotated files with a list of needed corrections to the authors and Editor-in-Chief. 3—Final submission: After again consulting experts and revising manuscripts as needed, send the (i) completed 2012 Mycotaxon submission form; (ii) separate text files for main text, tables, and legends; and (iii) art files to the Editor-in-Chief . Only text and image files prepared for immediate publication should be sent at this time. The Editor-in-Chief usually acknowledges manuscripts and thanks expert reviewers within two weeks, but please wait at least 14 days before sending a follow-up query (without attachments); this helps us keep Email traffic to a minimum during Mycotaxon publication deadlines or temporary closures of the editorial office. 4—Final editorial review & press preparation: Files not ready for publication will be rejected or returned to authors for further revision; the Editor-in-Chief gives tentatvely approved manuscripts a final grammatical and scientific review before converting all files into publishable format. The PDF proof, bibliographic citation, and nomenclatural entries are sent to all coauthors for final inspection prior to publication. After PDF conversion, the Editor-in-Chief corrects only processing or editorial errors prior to publication, but corrections of author errors are listed in the Errata of a subsequent volume for no charge. If authors have selected the open access option, they are asked to arrange payment of page charges with the Business Manager at this time. Mycotaxon ltd— www.mycotaxon.com The Mycotaxon Webmaster posts general and subscription information, important announcements, and author forms and templates on the official Mycotaxon site, which also hosts the regional mycobiota webpage for free download of distributional annotated species lists. Mycotaxon online— www.ingentaconnect.com/content/mtax/mt Mycotaxon publishes four ~500-page volumes a year. Both open access and subscription articles are offered. October–December 2011 ... xi

From the Editor-in-Chief

Mycotaxon 118 — Welcome to the (almost) on schedule October–December 2011 volume! Granted, you are reading this in 2012, but we have great hopes that the hardcopies will be mailed in the first week of the first month of our new year. The year 2011 was the first where virtually all subscribers received their volumes entirely on-line. Where once we believed that online publication would be speedier, we now understand that our host service (ingentaconnect) needs almost a month to process a completed volume for downloading on their site, slightly over the time it took Sheridan Press to print and distribute our 2010 volumes. Nonetheless, 2012 will see each Mycotaxon volume published within the months written on the cover. In the meantime, please enjoy Volume 118’s 94 new taxa, names, typifications, and validations proposed by 172 authors (representing 30 countries) in 50 research papers reviewed by 83 experts. Color photos continue to illuminate, drawings are of such high quality that that selecting only one cover drawing remains challenging (we are happy to present our first cover chytrid in Mycotaxon 118), and the research published will be consulted for years to come.

Publication dates: nominal and actual — Nomenclatural priority is based on the actual date of effective publication. The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants now permits effective publication in either printed or electronic format. We expected electronic publication to shorten (considerably) the time between a pdf’s leaving the editorial desk and publication. However, because we still send hard copies to libraries well before the volume becomes visible online, the actual publication date will be based on that earlier distribution date. A short while ago we discovered that ingentaconnect was citing the first day of the first month of a nominal quarter as ‘publication date.’ Thus, the delayed 2011 January–March volume, actually published on May 9, is cited on the download page as published on January 1, 2011. Plans are underway to correct the confusion, but until then, the date of effective publication is most reliably found on our “volume listings: publication history” publications webpage via www.mycotaxon.com. Remember that Mycotaxon always cites the actual publication date of the previous volume in the cover section of the next volume (see p. vii, this section).

Mycotaxon in 2012 and beyond — I wish to thank our authors and expert reviewers, the Editorial Advisory Board, and most especially the Mycotaxon staff (Nomenclature Editor Shaun Pennycook, Book Review Editor Else Vellinga, Webmaster Noni Korf, Business Manager Hannes Maddens, and Treasurer & Mentor Dick Korf) for helping us continue to offer Mycotaxon, the most highly respected International Journal of Fungal Taxonomy & Nomenclature. With warm best wishes for the New Year, Lorelei Norvell, Mycotaxon Editor-in-Chief December 30, 2011
