Your year-round campaigner for Seacombe

Dear Neighbour, Rae Voller

My name is Rae Voller and I am your Green Party campaigner for Seacombe. I grew up here and work locally as a community nurse and midwife. I have always loved how friendly our area is. I want to do my bit to help keep Seacombe special and make it an even better place to be.

I have been out and about conducting residents’ surveys in the area. These have helped me understand what matters to people. I love hearing feedback from residents about how they too find it a friendly place to live and want to celebrate some of the fantastic places we have here - the local parks, beaches, leisure centre and historic Mersey Ferry. However, those of you I have spoken to have said there is still lots of work that can be done to improve Seacombe.

In my regular newsletters I’ll be telling you about some of the things I’ve been doing to act on your concerns.

If I haven’t met you yet then I hope to very soon. In the meantime, if there Rae Voller is your Green Party are any issues you would like to raise with me, I’d love to hear from you. campaigner for Seacombe. Seacombe residents are fed up with fly-tippers. Rubbish dumped on our streets and in alleyways isn’t just anti-social. It drags the whole area down and can be a health and safety hazard. It’s so disappointing that some people care so little for where they live. Clearing up their mess makes council tax more expensive for everyone. Fly-tipping is the number one complaint on Rae Voller’s residents’ surveys.

The Council does prosecute fly-tippers. However, convincing the courts isn’t easy. Eye-witness reports or cctv evidence are essential. If you see anyone dumping do make a note of any vehicle registration numbers. You can report fly-tipping via www.wirral.gov.uk or call 0151 606 2004. Keep the reference number. If the problem persists, please get in touch with Rae.

Alleyway dumping is a big problem across Seacombe. Alleyways are Scenes like this between Albemarle “unadopted”. This means the Council is not responsible for maintaining Road and Brougham Road are all too them. However, money is allocated for BIFFA to clear the alleys each common. Rae has been busy month. Sometimes this doesn’t happen if access to the alley way is reporting fly-tipping to the Council. blocked or bin wagons can’t park nearby. Again, if this is an issue where You can help by following Rae’s advice you live let Rae know so she can raise the matter with the council. on how to report fly-tipping. In Seacombe we are lucky to have some lovely parks and green spaces that add so much to our quality of life. The pandemic has reminded us how important it is to have outdoor space to relax in and enjoy and where our children can play safely. The park rangers do amazing work with limited resources to maintain our parks and green spaces.

Of course there are issues and room for improvement. It’s disappointing to see any litter in our parks and to sometimes hear of anti-social behaviour. Rae has been inspecting all our parks and suggesting to the council where additional litter bins would help. She also speaks to local Community Rae Voller in Central Park Support Officers about keeping the parks safe. So, if you have any concerns or ideas about our parks please let Rae know.

Wirral is divided into 22 wards. Each ward has three councillors. Together, the 66 councillors make decisions about how council tax is spent and local services are provided. At the local elections in May, the Green Party made big gains winning seats from Labour in Birkenhead & Tranmere, and Bebington. The political make-up of the council changed to now include: Labour (30), Conservative (23), Lib Dem (6) and Green (5). This means no party has a majority and all decisions need the backing of at least two parties.

In Seacombe, all three councillors are Labour. Your MP and the Mayor of the City Region - which includes Wirral - are also Labour. This means Labour has a monopoly in Seacombe. There will be another round of local elections next May when you will elect one of your three ward councillors.

Libraries play a really important role in our community. For toddlers learning to read, children who want space to learn and adults who need access to the internet, libraries are vital for many people in Seacombe. Rae has heard from residents who are frustrated that Seacombe Library has been closed for so long due to the pandemic.

Libraries need to change to meet modern needs. Seacombe Library could certainly do with some much needed investment. The council is consulting on Closed and tired looking.
