It would seem that this proposal was unsuccessful but that Portobello was subsequently treated as an independent branch of the sixth circuit. St Johns replaced an earlier building of 1811 which stood on the northern side of the school in 1892. The two socieities merged in 1961 and the Emanuel building was closed. To some extent new record books were introduced to reflect the creation of a new body but in others St. Johns books remained in use. The St. Johns and the post merger records have therfore been listed as a single series
