Oakeshott was the foremost authority on the subject, and this work formed the capstone of his career. Anyone with a serious interest in European swords should own this book. Records of the Medieval Sword. Ewart Oakeshott. Forty years of intensive research into the specialised subject of the straight two- edged knightly sword of the European middle ages are contained in this classic study. Spanning the period from the great migrations to the Renaissance, Ewart Oakeshott emphasises the original purpose of the sword as an intensely intimate accessory of great significance and mystique. There are over photographs and drawings, each fully annotated and described in detail, supported by a long introductory chapter with diagrams of the typological framework first presented in The Archaeology of Weapons and further elaborated in The Sword in the Age of Chivalry. There are appendices on inlaid blade inscriptions, scientific dating, the swordsmith's art, and a sword of Edward Records of the Medieval Sword. • How to Choose Knives Upstream and Downstream of Good Cooking There Is Always a Good Knife
COLTELLERIE BERTI How to choose Knives Upstream and downstream of good cooking there is always a good knife. Every day we use many objects without knowing their intimate nature and without knowing which phenomena and undisputable physical laws determine their operation and usefulness for us .However, understanding such matters is impossible, considering the vast amount of knowledge it would require. These few pages, which make no claim to covering everything, will give you the opportunity of getting to know something more about knife making so you can use your knives better and get more satisfaction out of them. Handmade. Made in Italy. Choosing a knife for home. How to choose Is it normal to use saw blades to cut food other than bread, focaccia and products out of the oven? Is it really parsimonious to spend less for a knife that cuts badly and that you later have to throw away? Is it really an idea of the past to have high quality blades sharpened ever now and then, so you can still count on an excellent cutting tool through time? Is it a luxury to cut meat at the table with a hand made, smooth-bladed knife having a handle made of horn? We think not. This is why we feel it our duty to illustrate the essential cutting requirements with good knives, to all those who want to choose a knife set from our Collections. You can choose among preparation, serving and table knives with: Stainless steel blades with a high degree of carbon to ensure a long lasting cut.

  • Basic-Armouring-2Of4.Pdf
Chapter 8 — Padding Because you need to build your armour around your padding you need to know how to make it first! Gamberson This supplies basic padding under the body armour and something to hang your arm armour off. Some people rely on their gamberson (with a few minor additions such as a kidney belt) as their torso protection. This gives them excellent mobility at the expense of protection. If you are learning to fight, as well as armour, you are liable to get hit a lot so body armour might not be a bad idea—your choice! Making a gamberson is a sewing job; go get a needle and thread or borrow a sewing machine. The material you make it from should be relatively tough (it’s going to take a beating), adsorbent (you are going to sweat into it), colour fast (unless you want to start a new fashion in oddly coloured flesh) and washable (see sweating above). Period gambersons were made from multiple layers of cloth stitched together or padded with raw wool or similar material, modern ones often use an internal fill of cotton or polyester batting to achieve the same look with less weight. A descrip- tion of an arming doublet of the 15th century is “a dowbelet of ffustean (a type of heavy woollen broad cloth) lyned with satene cutte full of hoolis”. A heavy outer material, such as canvas or calico, is therefore appropriate with a softer lining next to the skin. For extra ventilation you can add buttonholes down the quilting seams.

  • Early Soft Metal Fittings
EARLY SOFT METAL FITTINGS This article is an attempt to illustrate the historic development, technical similarities as well as key differences between the major pre-Edo groups of soft-metal workers – with the disclaimer that there will always be exceptions to any attempt at categorization. Soft metal fittings dating to pre-Momoyama times are relatively common, but poorly understood and generally under-appreciated – especially when one takes the time to reflect on the often high artistic quality and level of craftsmanship required to produce them. Unlike iron fittings dating to the same periods, soft metal fittings tend to be very well preserved because the alloys as well as raw materials used in their manufacture tend not to corrode. Three broad groups of fittings need to be addressed: Kokinko, Tachi kanagu-shi and Kagami-shi. Kokinko means “old gold craftsman”. In a broad sense the term is intended to describe pre-Momoyama soft metal fittings which can not be categorized to any specific school or tradition, nor to any specific worker. Since signatures on fittings do not generally appear until the latest Muromachi, and virtually all early Goto works are attributed by later generations, the usage of the term kokinko may be broad indeed. This vagueness of definition has resulted in the term being extended rather haphazardly to encompass various works in soft metal from earliest times. To complicate the matter, there is considerable overlap in techniques employed by artisans we now categorize as kagami-shi (mirror makers) and tachi kagagu-shi (tachi fittings makers). Work by both of these groups has invariably been termed kokinko.

  • Rules and Options
Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

In addition, jet pilots and select crew members with ejection capability were issued the MC1 or M724 automatic rescue knife with 3 inch clip point blade and parachute shroud cutter. This knife was issued from 1957 until 1993. In lieu of the MC1, helicopter pilots and crew are issued the Camillus Model 1760 folding pocket knife with their survival vest. This stainless steel knife is equipped with 2.75 inch blade, can opener, cap opener, screw driver, and awl/punch. This folding knife is also standard issue with ground combat elements and has been around since 1945. It has been affectionately known by troops as the Demo Knife. Official Issue Swiss Army Knife The Swiss issued model 1961, a similar knife to the demo is named the Soldier by Victorinox and Standard Issue by Wenger. In 2003, Victorinox released a 111mm series of knifes known as the Trailmaster based on the German Army Knife. Not to be confused with Cold Steel’s Trail Master Bowie Knife, Victorinox renamed this knife Trekker. Offered with a one-handed open blade, the Trekker became very popular in the United States. In 2008 the Trailmaster/Trekker knife was officially adopted by the Swiss Government to replace the Soldier model 1961. The new Soldier features a one-handed serrated locking blade, Philips screwdriver, can opener, small screw driver, bottle opener, large locking screwdriver, wire striper, reamer, wood saw and key ring.
