RACE 3 - KRISTOFFERSSON PULLS OFF A GREAT OVERTAKE Kristoffersson claimed his second win of the season thanks to a masterpiece overtaking move on Monteiro. At the start, Monteiro was faster than Kristoffersson who was on pole, but the Swede took the inside line at T1 and moved ahead. Guerrieri followed in third position followed by Björk and Priaulx. At the back of the field guest driver Ritomo Miyata hit ’s car, they both spun and collected Ma Qing Hua. The safety car was deployed and after it exited the track Kristoffersson pulled away from Monteiro, Guerrieri and Björk. From lap 21, Ceccon began to recover positions; he passed Huff, Tarquini, Priaulx and Björk one after another, moving into fourth, while Guerrieri passed Monteiro for second. On lap 29, guest driver Ryuichiro Tomita went off and prompted the safety car back into action until the final lap; Monteiro began following it towards the pitlane entrance, then realized his mistake and swerved to the left to rejoin the track, but lost third position to Ceccon. However, after the race the Stewards imposed a ten- second penalty for the manoeuvre and so Monteiro dropped to 15th. Ceccon too was given a five-second penalty for clashing with Huff while passing him; this demoted the Italian to sixth and promoted Björk to third behind Kristoffersson and Guerrieri. The Italian had stalled on the grid with a broken driveshaft and Engstler couldn’t avoid hitting him. Soon after the race restarted, Kahia tried to pass Homola for P3, but drove onto the grass, lost control and went off at the Cimini 1 bend; Homola lost momentum and Coronel overtook him for P3. As a light rain began to fall, Rory Butcher, Jim Ka To, Norbert Kiss, Zhang Zhen Dong and Jessica Bäckman began recovering positions. Butcher with a new turbo fitted in his MG overtook J. Filippi for P6, while Bäckman advanced to P8 after passing Zhang and Kiss. On lap 3, Zhang went off and the safety car was deployed once again before clearing the track for one last lap. Magnus managed to retain the lead, while Gavrilov had to fight with Coronel to save the second place that was worth the Gold Medal. They clashed a couple of times, while Butcher passed Homola for P4 and joined the fight. They entered three abreast into the final turn and Gavrilov crossed the line in second place, with Coronel, Butcher, Homola and J. Filippi filling the positions between third and sixth, the five of them covered by only eight tenths. Jessica Bäckman was classified seventh after making contact with Ka To who went wide and dropped to ninth behind Julius Adomavičius, while Valters Zviedris in the only DSG car of the field passed Kiss for P10 during the last lap. Mason Filippi didn’t even take the start as he lost control while warming up the tyres and went off during the formation lap.

Here the level is Three questions to… excellent with some very good young drivers like Kanamaru and Shinohara. They were competitive from the start and completed the field with a number of slightly older drivers Matthew Howson who are very experienced like Mitsuyama and Matsumoto. This resulted in a lot of tough battles during the season.”

You emerged as the winner in the TCR Japan Championship’s inaugural season, clinching both the overall title for KCMG and the Saturday Series. How do you feel? “I feel great! It was the first year for me in Touring Cars and the inaugural season of TCR Japan. A nice combination! I had raced in Japan before in Formula 3 and built an excellent relationship with KCMG, so I’m really happy for everyone involved and also really pleased for TCR Japan’s promoters as they have really done an amazing job for the first year of the championship.”

You’ve won championships in the past It was a very competitive season; you had a peak at the beginning and another at the end. How do you rate your performance and the level of the championship? “Our beginning was very strong and we actually won the first ever race. Then, during the season we had some ups and downs, engine problems, contacts with other cars, typical Touring car stuff. We had some strengths and some weaknesses depending on the circuits. And obviously in Japan the weather is very unpredictable, which added extra thrills to the season. But we focused on details and worked very hard on the car for KCMG is deeply involved in TCR Suzuka, the Honda circuit. We improved the competition. It ran cars in the 2018 TCR car and studied the best set ups for wet and Europe and this year besides TCR Japan dry conditions because we wanted to collect it competes in the WTCR and the Super maximum points. The championship was Taikyu, in which you are one of the highly competitive with a number of drivers drivers. What are your plans for the near who won races. When you have a new future? championship on a domestic level, you can “The decision to involve me in Super Taikyu, with a front wheel drive car despite my background in single-seaters and prototypes, was good. I got to know the car well and I was amazed by its quality, driveability and performance. It meant I was busy, but I really enjoyed it. As for the future, with KCMG it’s always down to the boss, Paul Ip. I’ve raced for the team in F3, LMP2, winning Le Mans and now TCR Japan. KCMG is very ambitious with programmes all over the world. We haven’t made a decision yet, but we definitely want to maximise this success and keep on racing at this high level.”
