Contents 4 The importance and value of the Western Australian Institute of Sport to the development of the nation’s sporting talent Premier’s Foreword 5 was never more evident than in the past year when this State Chairman’s Report 6 provided a record contingent of athletes for the pinnacle of sport – the 2004 in Athens. She competed at the Olympic Games in 1948, 1952 and 1956 and was the first of Australia’s “golden girls”. Born in Guildford on July 18 1925, Shirley was educated at Previous Winners Northam High school and the University of Western Australia. Hers was a life of outstanding achievement. The winner of the WAIS Athlete of the Year Award for 2002/03 1984/85 Jenny Byrne (Tennis) Shirley won seven Olympic Medals, including two gold medals in was Peter Dawson. A product of the Lindrum-era on the Goldfields, he was a Foundation Member of the WA Hall of Champions. A calm, superbly efficient craftsman, Marshall was a dignified and illustrious figure in our sporting heritage. He passed away on February 24, 2004. Evelyn Whillier 21 November 1917 – 27 June 2004

Evelyn Whillier (nee de Lacy) was Western Australia’s first female Olympian. Born on 21 November 1917, Evelyn was a lissome freestyle swimmer from a noted Maylands swimming family who overcame the food shortages of the depression years to become Australia’s foremost freestyler of her era. She competed with distinction at the 1936 Olympic Games and became an Empire Games gold medalist at the 1938 Games. Her Olympic ambitions for the 1940 Games were cut short by the 2nd World War. Following her retirement from competition in 1943 Evelyn continued to contribute to swimming as a successful coach and supporter of the sport. Evelyn passed away on June 27 2004.
