5 New Gas Pipeline Completed The new gas pipeline which crosses Clapham and Newby was com- missioned at the begin- ning of October. The work on it was very noticeable as it wended its way across the parish but soon there will be little trace of it because the constructors have been careful to return the topsoil, replant hedgerows and restore dry stone walls. 7 A NEW ENTRANCE FOR THE CLAPHAM TRAIL Set at the head of the village, the Clapham Nature Trail has for many decades been a major attraction for visitors and residents alike. Leading to the Ingleborough Cave a mile and a quarter away via a beautiful lakeside walk and then a gradual climb with great views, it can then be continued on to Gaping Gill pothole and many of the main walking tours of Ingleborough, and is a very popular and well trod route. The entrance to the start of the walk has until now followed quite a circuitous route, heading away from the trail initially, to lead the visitor past the Sawmill Cottage and old lumber yard and then reversing direction back to the Nature Trail past the automatic coin operated toll machine to rejoin the main path on the Trail upwards to the lake. 9 CLAPHAM WHIST GROUP Clapham Mobile Library The Clapham Whist Group meet on Friday evenings The mobile library van visits Clapham on Wednesday in the Village Hall at 7.30p.m. All money made goes every three weeks. 18 WILDLIFE IN CLAPHAM Large flocks of Siskins and smaller flocks of Bramblings have been seen around the local area, they are both part of a large influx of these Finches that have arrived in the UK. The first Siskins were seen at Ingleborough Hall on the 4th October; and by the 16th October the flock of Siskins was up to about fifty birds. Between ten and twenty Siskins were seen around Clapham Station and Meldingscale Farm from the 19th October and about twenty Siskins were seen at Crina Bottom plantation on the 18th November. The first Brambling was seen at Ingleborough Hall on the 21st October. One Brambling called as it flew over Clapham on the 9th November. A flock of about twenty Bramblings was seen at Ingleborough Hall Kingfisher was seen by Crook beck at Calterber on the 11th and 16th November and one Brambling bridge – 11th November. flew over Clapham Station on the 16th November.
