KEY TO GROUP 8 Shrubs or trees usually more than 1.5 m tall. A. flower B. phyllode and C. leaf D. leaf E. leaf margins F. leaf margins spike pod lobed dissected crenate serrate NOTE: The following trees and shrubs, which are deciduous when flowering, will not come out in this key unless you can find a leaf. There are usually some old ones on the ground or even a few hanging on the tree. These plants are: Brachychiton (Group 8.G), Cochlospermum (Group 8.G), Cordia (Group 8.K), Gyrocarpos (Group 8.G), Sterculia (Group 8.O), Terminalia (Group 8.M), Turraea (Group 8.R), and the mangrove, Xylocarpus (Group 1.H). 1 Leaves with oil glands, readily visible with a hand lens if not to the naked eye, aromatic when crushed, eucalypt or citrus smell. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. En total, esta familia cuenta con 18 especies en el área de estudio; estas se incluyen en diez géneros que, a su vez, forman parte de cinco de las nueve subfamilias que actualmente integran las Malváceas. Se ha llevado a cabo una campaña de recolección por diversos enclaves de la ciudad, prestando especial atención a parques y jardines públicos. Simultáneamente a esa campaña, se ha buscado bibliografía para tener una idea de partida sobre qué especies de Malváceas han sido citadas alguna vez por la flora urbana de Sevilla. El material recolectado, depositado en el Herbario del Departamento de Botánica Vegetal y Ecología de la Universidad de Sevilla (SEV), ha sido la base para el desarrollo de esta revisión; a partir de él se ha elaborado una descripción original para cada especie y se han seleccionado los caracteres diagnósticos que han servido para construir claves dicotómicas de géneros y especies. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Martín Gómez J.J., Gutiérrez del Pozo D., Cervantes E., 2019: Seed shape quantification in the Malvaceae reveals cardioid-shaped seeds predominantly in herbs. – Botanica, 25(1): 21–31. Seed shape in the Malvaceae and other families of the order Malvales was investigated. Seed shape was quan- tified by comparison with the cardioid. TheJ index is the percent similarity between both images, the seed and the cardioid, and similarity is considered in cases where the J index is over 90. Seed shape was analysed in 73 genera, and seeds resembling the cardioid were found in 10 genera, eight in the Malvaceae and two in the Bi- xaceae and Cistaceae. Seed shape was quantified by comparison with the cardioid in 105 species. A correlation was found between the values of the J index and plant form, with higher values of the J index in the seeds of herbs, intermediate – in bushes, and lower values in trees. The results suggest a relationship between seed shape and plant form, where seeds resembling the cardioid are associated with plants having small size. -

Muell. Nombre común: Braquiquito de Bidwill Lugar de origen: este de Australia, Queensland. Etimología: Brachychiton deriva del griego brachys = corto y chiton = túnica o cubierta, en alusión al corto tomento que recubre a las semillas o, lo que es más pro‐ bable, a la cubierta externa persistente de las semillas. El epíteto específico honra al botánico inglés John Carne Bidwill (1815‐1853), quien realizó expediciones y recolec‐ tas de plantas por Australia y Nueva Zelanda, siendo nombrado en 1847 director del Jardín Botánico de Syd‐ ney. Descripción: Arbusto o arbolito caducifolio de 2‐4 m de altura, cubierto de pubescencia en todas sus partes, con una copa abierta y poco densa y un tronco simple o múltiple, con la corteza de color castaño pálido o gris, lisa o finamente fisurada. Hojas estipuladas, largamente pecioladas, ovado‐ cordadas, de 6‐16 x 6‐17 cm, con 3‐5 lóbulos ova‐ dos, redondeados u obtusos en el ápice, enteros o con lóbulos laterales muy obtusos. Son de color verde mate e hirsutas por el haz, especialmente a lo largo de los nervios, y algo más claras y con un den‐ so tomento castaño por el envés; nerviación pal‐ meada, impresa por el haz y resaltada por el envés. Pecíolo hirsuto, de 4‐10 cm de largo. Flores de color rojo‐anaranjado, agrupadas en las axilas de las hojas superiores, sobre ejes cubiertos de tomento casta‐ ño; pedicelos tomentosos, articulados, de 3‐8 mm de longitud; brácteas caedizas, de ovadas a lanceo‐ ladas, puberulentas, de 2‐6 x 1‐6 mm. -

Names updated 2021. 2 GUIDE TO THE PLANTS OF MAGNETIC ISLAND MANGROVES, DUNES AND WOODLANDS Betsy R. Jackes Magnetic Island (190 08 S, 1480 50 E), offshore from the north Queensland city of Townsville, was first named by Captain James Cook in 1770. He called it “Magnetical Point, land which has the appearance of an island”, because his compass moved erratically as he passed it. This large island, about 5,000 ha in area, rises to 493 m at Mt Cook, the highest point.
