Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

The last match at Bellslea saw a comfortable victory in the end over a young Clach side who after a terrible start made it difficult for you until that burst midway through the second half. How did you rate the performance?

Like you have said, we started the game very well and went 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes. This gave us a cushion which we somewhat accepted as we took our foot of the gas for the rest of the half. We did ok but maybe I have to credit Clach in that they Tonight sees the first of two home matches this week frustrated us and did well to break up our play. We regrouped at against Inverurie Loco Works in the Aberdeenshire Cup. After half time and I asked for a bit more urgency which I eventually the last couple of years you will no doubt be looking to do got around ten minutes into the second half where I think we better in the local competitions albeit Locos will provide a scored three goals in five minutes or so. We then finished the half stern test for you? strong and ran out comfortable winners in the end. A couple of our goals were extremely pleasing as we worked the ball well and Yes. The guys are well aware that we are looking to do better in our movement was excellent to get the space required to get in cup competitions, especially the Aberdeenshire Cup and Shield, behind Clach. I have never, as a player or manager, had an easy but we know it won’t be easy against Inverurie. We played them game against Clach so to win 6-0 was very pleasing. quite a bit last season and the results were relatively even. After

their opening day defeat to Buckie, they have picked up and You followed that up with another excellent performance and managed to get three wins on the bounce so like us they are victory at Buckie Thistle which is always a tough place to get a going into this game in a bit of form. We know where they will be

dangerous and despite having a few players missing, I expect result. That said I thought you were comfortable winners in the end so you must have been delighted with how the nothing but a tough game. We have to look after ourselves afternoon panned out despite the conditions and the pitch? though and we know that if we do what we are good at then we stand a good chance of winning games. We just have to make

Buckie is never an easy place to go, and certainly with them also sure we take one game at a time, and surpass the opposition’s going into the game with three wins from three games, we knew work rate to give us the best chance of progressing. I am looking that it was going to be tough. We started on the front foot and forward to it as cup games at the Bellsea are more often than not managed to take the lead in the first minute which was almost great games for everyone to be involved in. perfect. We then controlled the majority of the half but only went in at half time 2-1 up, as a result of a very debatable Saturday sees the visit of Fort William who are much improved penalty decision against us. Handballs in the box are a hot topic this season with the signing of several new players

from Caledonian Thistle. How important will it be to at present and we had one of our own as firstly I didn't think it hit William’s hand at all, more his chest. All my players were build upon your impressive start to the League campaign adamant that it didn't hit his arm. Even if it did, with the angle against an opponent who you are expected to beat? the referee had, I don't think there is any way he could have seen it as he would have been totally blinded by William’s body shape. Fort William will be a completely different test. With all due That said we accepted it and got over the decision quickly and respect to previous Fort William squads, the current one have a managed to go back in the lead from yet another Scott Barbour lot more at stake in my eyes. these youngsters coming from ICT goal. The second half was relatively even in terms of possession have their careers on the line knowing that their best chance to although I can’t recall one shot of note which troubled Paul in make it as a professional is to impress whilst they are on loan at goal. The better chances fell for us although it took until the last Fort William. Games now will be more of a battle and I fully minute to make the game safe. We are known for our attacking expect Fort William to come to us and try and knock the ball threats, however I think our defensive performances as a team, around. I do not think they will adapt their style when they visit and in particular the back five, have been very pleasing which us and I admire that from them. Again, we know we have started shows with only having conceded two in four games. We are well and we want to win as many games as possible so we will go heading in the right direction as we knew to be considered in to this match full of confidence but fully aware of the threats serious title challengers that we would need to tighten up Fort William possess and hopefully we can continue our winning defensively. run for another game.

All the Best, Mark

Evening folks and welcome for our game tonight against Locos, they have spent a few more £’s again this season and improved their squad so another difficult game for us. We are on a decent run so we go into tonight with confidence and high hopes to progress to the next round.

We beat Clach at home a few weeks back in a comfortable game and then had a good win against Buckie on Saturday, that’s set us up nicely for tonight now. We need to believe that we can compete against the top teams in the league as we are now showing that kind of consistency, if we have that belief then this could be a very good season for us.

Enjoy the game tonight

We then play the second of our homes game this week on Saturday against Fort William, the early kick off can be blamed on me hopefully it hasn’t put too much of you out of your routines.

Fort as we know have had a few young players loaned from Inverness Caledonian Thistle so today is going to be a difficult game for us, we need to use our good form, pace and strength to nullify them and secure the 3 points. Our squad is being put to the test throughout the early stages of the season due to the amount of games we are playing and injuries or work patterns of players but that’s where we need to be strong.

Hopefully you enjoy the game and we get the 3 points.

Cheers, Boom

Highland tour was a tonic for The Doc’s team

There was a time when some Scottish League sides played pre-season friendly matches against Highland League opposition. The tradition seems to have tailed off in recent years but among the sides who once headed north were Dundee United, Falkirk and St Johnstone. It may surprise many that more than 50 years ago, Tommy

Docherty took his Rotherham United team on a pre-season tour to the north of and afterwards reported enthusiastically: “We had a super time. I would recommend a close-season tour of the Highlands to any club.”

Docherty had taken over the reins of the Yorkshire club in November 1967 when the club faced the prospect of relegation to the Football League’s Division 3. He promised to save United from the drop but it was to no avail. Two former Dons were in the first-team squad: joined from Birmingham City in July 1968 while inside-forward Jim Storrie arrived from Pittodrie in December 1967. Leggat had starred as an outstanding winger and goalscorer with ’s championship-winning team in 1954-55 and had won 18 Scotland caps while with the Dons and Fulham.

Docherty took his squad to Tain for four days of special training. The Easter Ross town was also the home of the Glenmorangie Distillery. A challenge match against Ross County at Dingwall was arranged for August 1. There was speculation that Dave McParland, Partick Thistle’s long -serving player/coach and a friend of Docherty’s, might join either County or Rotherham and had already played a trial for the Dingwall side against a local Junior side. Archie Wright, County’s new boss, said he was keen to recruit McParland as he had the experience and the ability to bring on his young players. McParland appeared as a guest player for Ross in the friendly against Rotherham, but despite a last-ditch effort to sign the veteran on a game-to-game basis, McParland opted to stay at Firhill.

Graham Leggat showed he had lost none of his scoring touch when he netted a brace in United’s 3-0 win over County at Victoria Park, watched by a crowd of about 2,500. The friendly came at some cost to the Dingwall side after centre-half Ian Greig was crocked with a serious ankle injury. Goalkeeper Jim Morrison also took a knock, although less serious. An announcement over the PA system was made to pull 16-year-old Harry Windsor, County’s new signing from Culbokie, out of the crowd to take over between the posts for the last 20 minutes.

Leggat’s first goal came after only 30 seconds when he ran on to a back-heeled pass from Bobby Todd and made no mistake from 10 yards. Todd was again the provider when he ran to the by-line and then chipped the ball over the keeper’s head for Leggat to nod home. Jim Storrie came close to scoring a couple of times but was denied by the woodwork although a lob from him beat Morrison and Stephen Downes was on the spot to head the ball into the net for United’s third goal. The home side’s McMillan was brought down as he dribbled his way towards the United goal but he blazed the resulting penalty kick wide. Leggat almost got a hat-trick in the closing minutes but he was denied by the post.

NORTHERNHIGHLAND SLANT LEAGUE BY ROUND PETER UP MYERS

A County player who clearly impressed “The Doc” was 20 -year-old forward Ian Marshall, who was promptly signed by the United manager and made his debut for his new club in a friendly against Clydebank on August 3.

It would be Marshall’s second spell in England although his first stint had been disappointing as he told a newspaper: “When I signed for Preston as a 15-year-old I thought the way ahead was very rosy. Then I broke my leg at and was freed after three seasons, a disillusioned player.” Marshall was signed on a two- year contract as a full-time player and had been recommended to Docherty by Dave McParland. However, Marshall stayed at Millmoor for only one season, making four first-team appearances. He then headed Down Under where he turned out for South Melbourne Hellas.

Docherty left Rotherham in December 1968 and it was another Scot, first-team coach Jimmy McAnearney, who took over as manager and the Dundonian held the reins until May 1973. A year later, Docherty, now boss at

Aston Villa, had such fond memories of his Highland tour with Rotherham that he said that if Villa weren’t going to the US, he would “probably be lining them up for a tour in the far north”. He added: “The hospitality is perfect. More important, the football is a lot better than many people imagine.” That was praise indeed from the man who was later Scotland manager between September 1971 and December 1972.

Other English clubs headed across the border in 1968 for pre-season friendlies against Scottish League sides and included Blackpool, Derby County, Lincoln City, Southport, Tranmere Rovers and York City. Blackpool, who played against the Dons at Pittodrie, were managed by former player Stan Mortensen who had guested for

Aberdeen during the war while he was serving at RAF Lossiemouth.

MATCHHIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE – CLACH ROUNDNACUDDIN UP

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Clachnacuddin, Saturday 10th August 2019

The Broch continued their fine League form with a comfortable win over a young Clach side at Bellslea Park. Early goals from Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour gave the home side a great platform but a combination of poor finishing and great goalkeeping kept the score the same at the break. The visitors continued to put up stubborn resistance but three goals in a five minutes spell just after the hour ended the game as a contest and Paul Campbell capped a splendid afternoon rounding off the scoring before the finish to send the Black & Whites to the top of the table on .

Manager, Mark Cowie, reverted to his normal starting line up after the wholesale changes for the midweek cup tie against Ross County Colts with Paul Leask, Owen Cairns, Michael Rae, William West, Paul Campbell, Sean Butcher & Scott Barbour all returning at the expense of Logan Watt, Andrew Hannar, Edward Flinn, Lewis Davidson, Greg Buchan & Luke Barbour who dropped to the bench. Jamie Beagrie missed out because of suspension after his red card against Formartine United.

The home side only took four minutes to take the lead after Aidan Combe released Ryan Cowie down the right and his cross picked out Sean Butcher who saw his first attempt blocked but he regained his composure to tuck away the rebound past the stranded Grant Beattie in the Clach goal. Two minutes later Clach appealed for a penalty after Scott Dunn went down in the box but referee Filippo Mazzoni wasn't impressed with the claim. A minute later Aidan Combe tried his luck for the Broch but his shot went well over. The second goal was only delayed by moments though as the Broch doubled their lead on 8 minutes. Owen Cairns throw-in found Michael Rae and his knocked the ball inside to Scott Barbour who feinted past his marker before firing a low shot beyond the Clach keeper into the bottom corner.

The Broch continued to press for more goals but it was Clach who had the next real chance when Scott Dunn and Ross Logan fashioned a chance for the former but Paul Leask did well to save the striker's effort from the edge of the box. Just after the half hour mark Aidan Combe played a couple of one-twos with Scott Barbour and then Sean Butcher before laying the ball off to Michael Rae but he fired his shot well wide. On 35 minutes Sean Butcher flicked the ball onto Scott Barbour who picked out Aidan Combe with a defence splitting pass but Grant Beattie in the Clach goal did well to block the Broch 's effort. A minute before the break and the Clach keeper did well again this time thwarting Ryan Cowie with a smart save after Scott Barbour and Aidan Combe had combined to release the full back inside the penalty area. Sean Butcher then went close right on half time but he saw his shot blocked after good work on the left by Owen Cairns picked out the Broch man.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Clachnacuddin 0

The Broch continued to dominate the play after the break with Ryan Cowie’s cross on 48 minutes picking out Sean Butcher at the back post but his shot was blocked at the expense of a corner. A minute later though and Paul Leask had to move smartly to clear the ball before Ross Logan could take advantage of hesitancy in the Broch defence. The home side created another chance on 52 minutes when Aidan Combe drove into the Clach penalty area and the ball broke to Ryan Cowie who saw his effort pushed away by Grant Beattie. Three minutes later Sean Butcher set up Paul Campbell on the right and he cut inside before seeing his shot beaten away to safety. The visitors were trying their best to get back into the game and Eachainn Miller broke clear of two challenges but his shot from the edge of the area was straight at Paul Leask who made a comfortable save. ON the hour a Broch breakaway involving Luke Barbour, Paul Campbell and Scott Barbour saw the ball played through to Aidan Combe but his shot was tipped round the post by Grant Beattie. From the resultant corner Owen Cairns found Paul Campbell but he curled a shot just wide.

The home side finally made it 3-0 on 63 minutes when Scott Barbour curled the ball in from the right and Aidan Combe’s looping header found the back of the net. Two minutes later it was 4-0 after Paul Young picked the ball up in midfield and drove forward to the edge of the box before finding Paul Campbell in space who drilled a low shot past the Clach keeper. Worse was to follow for the visitors on 66 minutes when Luke Barbour combined with his namesake Scott and the Broch hitman lobbed Grant Beattie to make it a nap hand for the home side. The game was now over as a contest and both sides took the opportunity to freshen things up for the remaining minutes. On 79 minutes the Broch scored a sixth after Luke Barbour played a lovely reverse pass to Scott Barbour who saw his shot stings the hands of the Clach keeper but Paul Campbell was on hand to ram the rebound home. The chances kept coming and a break by the home side on 89 minutes down the right saw Scott Barbour release Ryan Cowie who cut the ball back to Luke Barbour but his shot was blocked and Owen Cairns fired the rebound straight at Grant Beattie who prevented any further scoring.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh, Saturday 17th August 2019

The Broch continued their fine league form with another victory at a tough venue in very windy conditions. They got off to the perfect start with Sean Butcher’s goal on two minutes and after the Jags equalised from the spot Scott Barbour notched his sixth of the season midway through the second half. A controlled second half performance finally got the goal it merited in stoppage time from Lewis Davidson and there was even time for Greg Buchan to see his penalty save right at the death.

Mark Cowie made one change which was enforced by Michael Rae missing they match after his wide Nadine had given birth to a baby daughter earlier in the week, Jamie Beagrie returned from suspension to take his place in the midfield. There was also a place for Bryan Hay on the bench after he had recovered from injury.

The visitors couldn’t have got off to a better start on two minutes when Ryan Cowie’s cross from the left was missed by Scott Barbour but Sean Butcher managed to get on the end of it to stab the ball home from close range. Three minutes later Ryan Cowie broke free after a Buckie Thistle corner and drove towards the home side’s goal before seeing his dangerous cross cut out before he could pick out a Black and White shirt.

The Jags levelled on 11 minutes when Sam Robertson turned past Kieran Simpson, then saw his cross handled by William West inside the penalty area and referee Billy Baxter had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Sam Urquhart coolly slotted home.

On 21 minutes Owen Cairns cross from the right was only half cleared to Aidan Combe at the edge of the penalty area and he saw his raking drive sting the hands of Lee Herbert who held the shot at the second attempt. A minute later and the Broch were back in front after a lovely move which ended with Paul Campbell picking out Scott Barbour with a defence splitting pass and the striker rifled the ball past Lee Herbert into the bottom corner.

Half Time: Buckie Thistle 1 Fraserburgh 2

The visitors now had the strong wind at their backs in the second half and went looking for a third goal seven minutes in when William West’s ball down the left wing picked out Ryan Cowie and his wind-assisted cross had to be tipped over the crossbar by the Buckie keeper as it dipped towards the net. On 56 minutes Hamish Munro dispossessed Paul Campbell on the halfway line and drove forward before finding Andrew MacAskill but the Buckie striker pulled his shot well wide.

The Broch were looking more and more comfortable but were still looking for that elusive third goal and it almost came on 69 minutes when Paul Young’s header forward found Scott Barbour at the edge of the penalty area and he laid it off to Sean Butcher but his shot was easily saved.

On 77 minutes the visitors were awarded a free kick 25 yards out after Paul Young’s driving run had been ended illegally by Andrew MacAskill who received a yellow card for his trouble. Ryan Cowie curled a dipping set piece just over the crossbar.

Six minutes later Jamie Beagrie sent Scott Barbour clear on goal but the normally deadly Broch striker was caught in two minds and could only poke the ball straight at the keeper. As the match entered the final minute Kevin Fraser had a chance for the home side but he fired wide of Paul Leask’s goal.

The Black and Whites finally put the game to bed in stoppage time when Scott Barbour ran onto a through ball on the left and fired in a shot which Lee Herbert did well to push away but the loose ball fell to Lewis Davidson who composed himself before coolly tucking the ball into the net from 12 yards.

The Broch then passed up a great opportunity for a fourth goal deep in injury time after Lee Herbert impeded Luke Barbour inside the penalty area but he redeemed himself to save Greg Buchan’s tame attempt from the spot kick.

Full Time: Buckie Thistle 1 Fraserburgh 3

Buckie Thistle: Lee Herbert, Hamish Munro, Kieran Adams, Sam Morrison, Scott Adams, Sam Urquhart (Joe McCabe 32), Kevin Fraser, Craig Cowie (Declan Milne 75), Jay Cheyne (Mark McLauchlan 64), Andrew MacAskill, Sam Robertson. Subs not used: Lewis MacKinnon, Callum Murray, Shaun Wood, Shaun Carroll. Goalscorer: Sam Urquhart (penalty, 11).
