The hard part is when our beloved USC colleagues and friends pass away. As we honor their memories and say good-bye, I am thankful for those who have contributed their life stories and who have helped us preserve and remember our USC history and heritage. A major role of the Emeriti Center is helping to honor and preserve the past. We have accomplished this through the USC Living History Project (started through contributions honoring the late H. Dale Hilton) Janette Brown with more than 40 digitized interviews. Our history is also preserved through the mini-bio project posted online, in newsletter articles, and by those who contribute their autobiographical writings. We continue to urgently work to capture the stories of as many of our retirees as possible so we do not lose precious memories. Several years ago, Barbara Inamoto funded an endowment to ensure the continuance of the annu- al Inamoto Lecture honoring her late husband, Noboru Inamoto. This has been a wonderful lega- cy to his memory. In addition to our general EC endowment fund and the Inamoto endowment, we aim to create other endowments geared specifically to ensure income streams for important service and projects. The newest endowment fund will be created for the USC Living History Project through the generosity of USC Public Relations Associate Vice President Susan Heitman and Louise Ball (retired, Special Assistant to the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC). Louise is transferring an existing endowment from the Medical School honoring her son Chan, to help fund more Living History interviews with Medical School faculty and staff. We hope that the Living History endowment will continue to grow and support many more interviews each year. The Provost’s office has generously supported the Emeriti Center to become a full time profes- sional office and to expand programs, but the three-year commitment to grow the EC budget will end June 2008. At that time we must find ways to leave a legacy for the Emeriti Center that will honor and preserve the past yet allow the Center and the Emeriti College to grow and flourish in the future. We have great ideas for new programs and expanded meeting space, but we are not in a position to fund them due to limited resources. Someday we hope to secure multi-million dollar naming gifts that will endow important projects, services and programs for the USC Retiree Community while also serving the university and the community at large. Building endowments is our insurance that the programs will continue to flourish during funding shortages and as inflation increases. We are so very grateful to those who have donated time and funds to help us grow! Barr-Melej This dissertation examines the struggle between Chile’s opposition press and the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (1973-1990). It argues that due to Chile’s tradition of a pluralistic press and other factors, and in bids to strengthen the regime’s legitimacy, Pinochet and his top officials periodically demonstrated considerable flexibility in terms of the opposition media’s ability to publish and distribute its products. However, the regime, when sensing that its grip on power was slipping, reverted to repressive measures in its dealings with opposition-media outlets. Meanwhile, opposition journalists challenged the very legitimacy Pinochet sought and further widened the scope of acceptable opposition under difficult circumstances. Ultimately, such resistance contributed to Pinochet’s defeat in the 1988 plebiscite, initiating the return of democracy.

    RESOLUTION MURRAY FROMSON WHEREAS, Murray Fromson is a recipient ofthe 2012 Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Southern California; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson's career injourna1ism spans more than three decades; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson was an Associated Press and CBS News Correspondent and Producer who covered both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the former Soviet Union, and two U.S. presidential campaigns; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson also covered major stories such as the armistice talks in Korea, the end of the U.S. occupation in Japan, the 1965 war between India and Pakistan, and the U.S. Apollo program that put the first men on the moon; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson and his CBS News colleagues were awarded two Overseas Press Club Awards for their reporting on the fall of Saigon in 1975; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson became a founding member of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in 1969 and represented journalists involved in court challenges that tested their First Amendment rights; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson was a moderator of the PBS program, "California Week in Review" and was the producer of the nationally syndicated program, "Eric Sevareid's Chronicle"; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson joined the University of Southern California faculty in 1982, and served as Director ofthe School of Journalism from 1994-1999; and WHEREAS, Murray Fromson was the founder and director of USC's Center for International Journalism and recruited 115 working journalists to earn their Master's Degrees; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption ofthis resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby commend Murray Fromson on his numerous professional accomplishments and community contributions and congratulates him on receiving the prestigious 2012 Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Southern California.

Through the Cold War's ebb and flow, there were always contacts across the line, even at the tensest of times. One of the most remarkable was the information arrangement made between American and Communist-affiliated journalists at the Korean truce talks first at Kaesong and then at Panmunjom from July 1951 to July 1953.
