Scholarship Programs

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Suncoast Chapter, also known as NATAS Scholarship Program is hosted by WLTV-DT. This is an annual scholarship competition for college/university students majoring in Communications. Our Director of Community Empowerment chairs the Committee that selects the winning students. The scholarship is awarded to around 10 students who will use the monetary award towards tuition and books for their college education in the field of broadcast journalism or communications. The selected winners are designated by a committee of professionals both from the NATAS Suncoast chapter and Univision.

For the 18th consecutive year, WLTV-DT along with a few sponsors, held their annual scholarship known as “Orgullo de Nuestra Juventud” (Pride of our Youth) to foster academic success in local Hispanic youth. Ten amazing students were honored and awarded this prestigious award. The scholarship entails many on-air elements, and concludes with an awards luncheon hosted by our news anchor. During the tapings at the schools, our production crew is able to create awareness to the winning students and their classmates of the world of TV production. The Academic Excellence/Community Service Award is open to South Florida and Broward high school students who have achieved a high GPA and demonstrated an outstanding commitment to civic duty and community service. The Academic Achievement Award is open to Miami Dade and Broward County high school students who have demonstrated academic growth in spite of significant limitations and/or challenges. All winners were garnered with various awards and scholarships from the event sponsors.

Station Initiatives

For the sixth consecutive year, BrandsMart USA and WLTV-DT Univision 23 awarded the “Premio Verde Escolar” (Green Academic Award) to honor schools who have successfully incorporated environmental education and ‘green’ activities into their curriculum. The winning schools, Miami Palmetto Senior High School & Lake Forest Elementary School, were recognized and received a monetary award to continue to assist in their ‘green’ efforts. During the tapings at the schools, our production crew is able to create awareness to the winning students and their classmates of the world of TV production.

For the 13th consecutive year, the station awards and highlights ten very special teachers through the “Un Maestro Especial” (A Special Teacher) scholarship award. WLTV-DT partnered with Papa John’s Pizza and Nova Southeastern University to recognize these outstanding Miami Dade and Broward County teachers. This award was created to celebrate teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty and have a distinct and profound impact on students. Part of this process is to create a 30 second vignette that profiles the winning teachers and their students. This video is created by our station crew with the help and involvement of the students and teachers. Students and teachers acquire basic familiarity in video production and can witness part of what it takes to be a producer and photographer at a . Each teacher was garnered with awards from each of the event sponsors.

The station’s community affairs department organized 3 workshops throughout the school year for high school juniors called “Camino a la Universidad.” The workshops are directed towards high school juniors who are looking forward to attending college but need more guidance as to the next step. In addition, the workshop has helpful information for parents who are interested in financial aid and guiding their children as well in the right direction. The workshop includes WLTV-DT talent, professional speakers and mentors, financial aid advisors, University personnel, and lastly some organizations that help students complete their service hours. Throughout the four workshops, students interact with each other and have the opportunity to fill out questionnaires, ask questions to our talent and station staff regarding job opportunities within the industry, and listen to the speakers. At the end of the four workshops, each student receives a certificate, which signifies they have completed the workshop.

WLTV-DT participates in an effort to promote reading in public schools through the “Club de Libros” (Reading Club) program which provides students with a basis for bilingual education through reading. Maria Fernanda Lopez – News Reporter visits 18 schools in Miami Dade County Public Schools throughout the school to read Spanish books to students in grades K-8. Additionally both the Reporter and Photographer speak to the teachers and students about their careers at a television station and answer questions. The stations air the weekly reading segments throughout the school year. The objective of this campaign is to promote bilingual reading, highlight the importance of reading in education and the positive messages that can be found in books.

The stations participate in a school based initiative to increase environmental awareness among Hispanic youths through “Club Planeta Vision”. Paola Elorza – Environmental News Reporter visits six Miami Dade County Public School classes who prepare school based activities and events to educate and inform students on the importance of environmental awareness issues. Additionally both the Reporter and Photographer speak to teachers and students about their careers at a television station and answer any related questions.

Through the program students are paired with older students who have been in the program to ensure a smooth transition into the next grade level.
