Special thanks to Arts Laureate This semester, students could not rehearse and perform together in person as they have in the past. Instead, students practiced and submitted individual videos of their parts. Arts Laureate, a local production studio, then layered the audio tracks together to create the sound of an ensemble. Finally, they compiled the videos so that every student appears on the screen, reunited virtually for the performance. Founded in 1960 by Lyn McLain, DCYOP is an integral part of the Washington, DC community, fostering the musical, academic, and social development of more than 60,000 youth. Our mission is "music for young people; achievement for life." DCYOP was the first youth orchestra to have the honor of performing at the Kennedy Center. Our Youth Orchestra has toured 23 countries, played for numerous U.S. presidents and foreign diplomats, and worked with esteemed musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Aaron Copland, Gustavo Dudamel, Leonard Slatkin, and Mstislav Rostropovich. In 2018, the Youth Orchestra was the first American youth orchestra to be the resident orchestra at the MusicaRiva Festival in Lake Garda, Italy. We offer group lessons and ensemble training on all orchestral instruments for students ages 4 ½ to 18 and derive our success from a strong emphasis on musical achievement and excellence. The program consists of ten orchestral ensembles including the renowned Youth Orchestra. Each week, 40 highly qualified faculty members teach classes to 600 students on Saturdays at Takoma Education Campus. All students perform at least once per semester in concerts that are free and open to the public. DCYOP distinguishes itself through its inclusivity. The program welcomes every student who wishes to participate, regardless of family circumstances or prior musical ability. DCYOP strives to make its program affordable to all by charging tuition on a sliding scale, which enables children from a wide range of backgrounds to experience the joy of learning and making music together. Inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela’s national youth orchestra program that uses music as an agent for social change, DCYOP also runs an after-school music program in DC Public Schools. DCYOP’s Children’s Orchestra currently operates at two Title One elementary schools in the District. DCYOP encourages community among its diverse student body while fostering each student's creativity and growth. Through the rigor of orchestral music instruction, students increase their self-esteem and build character, see greater possibilities for themselves, feel that they are valued members of a musical community, become accountable for their role in the orchestra, enhance their communication skills, form new friendships, increase their curiosity and love of learning, and develop teamwork and listening skills. The staff of the DC Youth Orchestra Program would like to extend our warmest thanks to our board who, though a time of uncertainty and unrest, has guided our vital work of community-building through music education with diligence, optimism, and generosity.
