Digital Program 2014 SABR Analytics Conference 3 Welcome! Welcome to the third annual SABR Analytics Conference. In 2014, we have invited another top group of speakers from throughout the baseball industry, and we have also added new panels such as Medical Analysis and Injury Prevention; Which Numbers Athletes Love, Which Numbers Athletes Hate; The International Baseball Landscape; Prospect Analysis and Evaluation; Telling Stories in the Age of Sabermetrics; and SABR Defensive Index. Each year, the top minds of the baseball analytic community gather to discuss, debate and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. The event is a natural for SABR. The Society for American Baseball Research has a long and storied history with baseball statistical analysis, evidenced by the link between our name and sabermetrics. While SABR is a multi-faceted organization involved in virtually every aspect of baseball, we have taken a major step to re-connect with our beginnings by producing and hosting our third annual SABR Analytics Conference. This year’s conference will be held from Thursday, March 13 through Saturday, March 15 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix in downtown Phoenix. The schedule will consist of a combination of Guest Speakers, Panels and Research Presentations — plus the Diamond Dollars Case Competition. In this competition, graduate and undergraduate students will analyze and present a real baseball operations decision. SABR’s long history in this area of baseball research, coupled with our mission of advancing the understanding and the knowledge of baseball, makes us the perfect choice to coordinate and host such an important baseball industry event. Once again, we want to thank all of our attendees and our sponsors, which include Major League Baseball, ESPN, Bloomberg Sports, Sportvision, Rawlings, Baseball Info Solutions, Topps, SmartKage, YarcData, Baseball-Reference.com, and the following MLB teams: the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers. You can visit SABR.org/analytics during and after the conference for complete coverage of the 2014 SABR Analytics Conference, including stories and highlights, video and audio clips, and photo galleries. • Hot Stove Economics: Understanding Baseball’S Second Season by J.C
Hot Stove Economics: Understanding Baseball’s Second Season by J.C. Bradbury Interview Questions: Why did you write a book about valuing baseball players? The action from Spring Training through the World Series isn’t enough to satiate my interest in the game. Like many baseball fans, when the action on the field stops, my mind turns to analyzing how all the wheeling and dealing will improve or harm the teams involved. Being an economist, I was naturally curious as to how the things players do translate into real dollars. It’s easy to generalize about whether a trade or signing is good or bad, but I wanted some hard numbers to back up the analysis. I was familiar with the rich economics literature on the subject, so I decided to update and apply it. Briefly explain your method for valuing baseball players. First, I quantified how winning affects revenue. Second, I determined how important the things that players do on the field contribute to winning—this includes contributions on offense and defense. Once had both, I could value players according to how their individual accomplishments translated into revenue through their contributions to winning. This general approach was developed by economist Gerald Scully in the 1970s. In the climate of a recession, how can baseball players possibly be worth the salaries they’re getting on the free agent market? Major League Baseball is big business, taking in about $6 billion dollars a year. Even in the current recession, baseball revenues have continued to grow; only the rate of growth has slowed.

  • Sabermetrics: the Past, the Present, and the Future
Sabermetrics: The Past, the Present, and the Future Jim Albert February 12, 2010 Abstract This article provides an overview of sabermetrics, the science of learn- ing about baseball through objective evidence. Statistics and baseball have always had a strong kinship, as many famous players are known by their famous statistical accomplishments such as Joe Dimaggio’s 56-game hitting streak and Ted Williams’ .406 batting average in the 1941 baseball season. We give an overview of how one measures performance in batting, pitching, and fielding. In baseball, the traditional measures are batting av- erage, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage, but modern measures such as OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) are better in predicting the number of runs a team will score in a game. Pitching is a harder aspect of performance to measure, since traditional measures such as winning percentage and earned run average are confounded by the abilities of the pitcher teammates. Modern measures of pitching such as DIPS (defense independent pitching statistics) are helpful in isolating the contributions of a pitcher that do not involve his teammates. It is also challenging to measure the quality of a player’s fielding ability, since the standard measure of fielding, the fielding percentage, is not helpful in understanding the range of a player in moving towards a batted ball. New measures of fielding have been developed that are useful in measuring a player’s fielding range. Major League Baseball is measuring the game in new ways, and sabermetrics is using this new data to find better mea- sures of player performance.

Examining if High-Team Payroll Leads to High-Team Performance in Baseball: A Statistical Study Nicholas Lambrianou 13' B.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) is a league of different teams in different cities all across the United States, and those locations strongly influence the market of the team and thus the payroll. Year after year, a certain amount of teams, including the usual ones in big markets, choose to spend a great amount on payroll in hopes of improving their team and its player value output, but at times the statistics produced by these teams may not match the difference in payroll with other teams.

  • Versatile Fox Sports Broadcaster Kenny Albert Continues to Pair with Biggest Names in Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Erik Arneson, FOX Sports Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 [email protected] VERSATILE FOX SPORTS BROADCASTER KENNY ALBERT CONTINUES TO PAIR WITH BIGGEST NAMES IN SPORTS Boothmates like Namath, Ewing, Palmer, Leonard ‘Enhance Broadcasts … Make My Job a Lot More Fun’ Teams with Former Cowboy and Longtime Broadcast Partner Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston and Sideline Reporter Laura Okmin for FOX NFL in 2016 With an ever-growing roster of nearly 250 teammates (complete list below) that includes iconic names like Joe Namath, Patrick Ewing, Jim Palmer, Jeremy Roenick and “Sugar Ray” Leonard, versatile FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert -- the only announcer currently doing play-by-play for all four major U.S. sports (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) -- certainly knows the importance of preparation and chemistry. “The most important aspects of my job are definitely research and preparation,” said Albert, a second-generation broadcaster whose long-running career behind the sports microphone started in high school, and as an undergraduate at New York University in the late 1980s, he called NYU basketball games. “When the NFL season begins, it's similar to what coaches go through. If I'm not sleeping, eating or spending time with my family, I'm preparing for that Sunday's game. “And when I first work with a particular analyst, researching their career is definitely a big part of it,” Albert added. “With (Daryl Johnston) ‘Moose,’ for example, there are various anecdotes from his years with the Dallas Cowboys that pertain to our games. When I work local Knicks telecasts with Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier on MSG, a percentage of our viewers were avid fans of Clyde during the Knicks’ championship runs in 1970 and 1973, so we weave some of those stories into the broadcasts.” As the 2016 NFL season gets underway, Albert once again teams with longtime broadcast partner Johnston, with whom he has paired for 10 seasons, sideline reporter Laura Okmin and producer Barry Landis.

MEDIA CLIPS – Jan. 23, 2019 Walker short in next-to-last year on HOF ballot Former slugger receives 54.6 percent of vote; Helton gets 16.5 percent in first year of eligibility Thomas Harding | MLB.com | Jan. 22, 2019 DENVER -- Former Rockies star Larry Walker introduced himself under a different title during his conference call with Denver media on Tuesday: "Fifty-four-point-six here." That's the percentage of voters who checked Walker in his ninth year of 10 on the Baseball Writers' Association of America Hall of Fame ballot. It's a dramatic jump from his previous high, 34.1 percent last year -- an increase of 88 votes. However, he's going to need an 87-vote leap to reach the requisite 75 percent next year, his final season of eligibility. Jayson Stark of the Athletic noted during MLB Network's telecast that the only player to receive a jump of at least 80 votes in successive years was former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, who was inducted in 2012. But when publicly revealed ballots had him approaching the mid-60s in percentage, Walker admitted feeling excitement he hadn't experienced in past years. "I haven't tuned in most years because there's been no chance of it really happening," Walker said. "It was nice to see this year, to watch and to have some excitement involved with it. "I was on Twitter and saw the percentages that were getting put out there for me. It made it more interesting. I'm thankful to be able to go as high as I was there before the final announcement." When discussing the vote, one must consider who else is on the ballot.

  • SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS April 8, 2010
SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS April 8, 2010 Originally published April 7, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Page modified April 7, 2010 at 11:51 PM Mariners bullpen falters in 6-5 loss to Oakland Oakland's Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. By Geoff Baker Seattle Times staff reporter OAKLAND, Calif. - The realities of a six-man bullpen began hitting the Mariners about as hard as their opponent was by the time the fifth inning rolled around. It was clear by then that Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith would have to scratch and claw just to make it through the minimum five innings his team desperately needed Wednesday night. After that, it was Russian roulette time, as the Mariners played a guessing game with their limited relief corps, squeezing every last pitch they could out of some arms. But they couldn't get the job completely done as Kurt Suzuki drilled a deep fly ball past the glove of Milton Bradley at the left-field wall in the ninth inning, handing reliever Mark Lowe and the Mariners a 6-5 walkoff loss. After the game, manager Don Wakamatsu suggested the team would have to call up another bullpen arm if a similar long-relief scenario occurs in Thursday's series finale. "We can't keep going like this," Wakamatsu said. The second walkoff defeat in two nights for the Mariners, in front of 18,194 at the Coliseum, has them crossing their fingers that starters Doug Fister and Jason Vargas don't implode these next two days.
