Through the examples of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s music and an insightful BBC radio article on gender inequality this thesis explores the fluid musical exchanges of information with other styles of Qawwali performances, and the unchanging nature of an oral tradition that maintains sociopolitical hierarchies and gender relations in Sufi shrine culture. Perceptions of history within shrine culture blend together with social and theological developments, long-standing interactions with society outside of the shrine environment, and an exclusion of the female body in rituals. -

Weed, Ph.D. The Institute for Research and Evaluation Thomas Lickona, Ph.D. Center for the 4th and 5th Rs (Respect and Responsibility) School of Education, State University of New York at Cortland ABSTRACT This chapter provides a broad picture of the abstinence education movement in the U.S. and the historical, political, and theoretical context of its journey. It describes the problems it has targeted, the policies and programs it has designed to solve them, and the results of these various interventions. Solutions to the problems posed by adolescent sexual activity have fallen into three camps: risk reduction, risk avoidance, and a combination of those two approaches. This historical context permits a comparative analysis of the most common sex education strategies and provides a better understanding of what abstinence education actually looks like—what it is and what it is not. In addition to describing the outcomes of the different approaches to sex education, we examine their foundational premises and assumptions, with the intent to clarify not only what does or does not work but also the reasons for success or failure. As important as the effectiveness question is, the underlying rationale, theory, or premise on which any program strategy is based is equally important if we are to understand how to benefit from prior successes and failures. In addressing these issues, we propose and describe an empirical model that delineates key predictors of adolescent risk behavior and demonstrates important causal mechanisms that program developers can focus on for more effective interventions. -

It analyzed the Ikwerre relations with her Kalabari and Okrika coastal neighbours, as well as the Etche, Eleme, Ekpeye, Ogba Abua and the Igbo of Imo state hinterland neighbours. The paper concluded that the internal developments which were stimulated by their contacts impacted significantly on their culture. Key words: Ikwerre, Intergroup Relations, Developments, Culture, Neighbour. Introduction Geographical factors aided the movement of people from one ecological zone to another in migration or interdependent relationships of trade exchange. These exchanges and contacts occurred even in pre-colonial times. The historical roots of inter-group relations of the Ikwerre with her neighbours, dates back to pre-colonial times but became prevalent from the 1850 onward when the Atlantic trade became emphatic on agrarian products as raw materials to the industrial western world. This galvanized the hitherto existing inter-group contact between the Ikwerre and her neighbouring potentates. Kenosis and the nature of the Persons in the Trinity David T. Williams Department of Historical and Contextual Theology University of Fort Hare ALICE E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Kenosis and the nature of the Persons in the Trinity Philippians 2:7 describes the kenosis of Christ, that is Christ’s free choice to limit himself for the sake of human salvation. Although the idea of Christ’s kenosis as an explanation of the incarnation has generated considerable controversy and has largely been rejected in its original form, it is clear that in this process Christ did humble himself. This view is consistent with some contemporary perspectives on God’s self-limitation; in particular as this view provides a justification for human freedom of choice. As kenosis implies a freely chosen action of God, and not an inherent and temporary limitation, kenosis is consistent with an affirmation of God’s sovereignty. This view is particularly true if Christ’s kenosis is seen as a limitation of action and not of his attributes. Such an idea does not present problems concerning the doctrine of the Trinity, specifically regarding the relation between the economic and the immanent nature of the Trinity. The Trinitarian doctrine, on the contrary, indeed complements this idea – specifically the concept of perichoresis (the inter- relatedness among the Persons of the Triniy and the relation between the two natures of Christ). THE WESTERN LEGAL TRADITION The Western legal tradition, like Western civilization as a whole, is under- going in the 20th century a crisis greater than any other in its history, since it is a crisis generated not only from within Western experience but also from without. From within, social, economic, and political transformations of un- precedented magnitude have put a tremendous strain upon traditional legal institutions and legal values in virtually all countries of the West. Yet there have been other periods of revolutionary upheaval in previous centuries, and we have somehow survived them. What is new is the confrontation with non- Western civilizations and non-Western philosophies. In the past, Western man has confidently carried his law with him throughout the world. The world today, however, is more suspicious than ever before of Western "legal- ism." Eastern man and Southern man offer other alternatives. -

An Integrated Approach to the Study of Language Attitudes and Change in Nigeria: The Case of the Ikwerre of Port Harcourt City Kelechukwu Uchechukwu Ihemere University of Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 1. Introduction Port Harcourt City is the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria. Many centuries ago the present day location called Port Harcourt was inhabited only by the minority Ikwerre ethnic group, but today Port Harcourt is a metropolitan city, with over a million people (made up of Ikwerre and largely non Ikwerre indigenes from other parts of Nigeria, and a significant number of foreign nationals who work in the petroleum and allied industries). Due to the metropolitan nature of present day Port Harcourt, the Ikwerre now have to share their community with non Ikwerre people from other parts of the country, with whom they have no linguistic affinity. Thus, the medium of wider communication is naturally NPE (Nigerian Pidgin English). It is the language spoken at school and in the local neighbourhoods by children, at work and market by their parents and NPE is also commonly used for sermons in most Christian church services. Further, I observed, while doing fieldwork in Port Harcourt between May and September 2003 that the indigenous Ikwerre population of Port Harcourt is gradually, but powerfully, being influenced in their language behaviour (in terms of both use and choice) within and across the community by their neighbours who do not have Ikwerre as their first language. Ikwerre is still spoken by many inhabitants of the city and its environs as their first language, but this is largely confined to very intimate communications, typified by that between grandparents and other older members of the community.
