He has been a visiting professor at numerous foreign universities in the USA, Latin America, Australia and Europe. He is a member of Academia Europaea (London), the Polish Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Cambridge, Mass.). From 1998 Vice-President of the International Sociological Association (ISA). Recipient of New Europe Prize 1996. His books published in English include: System and Function, N.Y. Piotr Sztompka*3 THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO TRUST; THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR THE RESOLUTION OF INTERGROUP CONFLICT Abstract In the rich and evolving research of trust there are two opposite theoretical approaches. One in the tradition of Alexis de Tocqueville (1835), Robert Putnam (1993), Francis Fukuyama (1995) and many others considers trust as a quality of interpersonal relations emerging from below, turning into shared cultural re- source and producing viable democracy and prosperous economy. The causal vector is from micro to macro, from interpersonal networks to organizations, in- stitutions and the state. This is the dominant approach. But there is also an alterna- tive perspective which claims that trust is facilitated or even enforced by the “civ- ilized public sphere” (Papakostas 2012), or “institutionalized skepticism” (Cleary and Stokes 2006), i.e. the rational political and economic organization, and par- ticularly the clear, stable, transparent and consistent law universalistically and efficiently applied and executed. Here the causal vector is from the state, organ- izations and institutions toward interpersonal trust, from macro to micro. Both 125 approaches should not be considered as competing but rather as complementary. They have also different but complementary implications concerning the resolu- tion of intergroup conflicts by building trust. For example, the earlier suggests cultivating trust from below by encouraging personal contacts, mutual acquaint- ance, cooperation, participation in common voluntary ventures by hostile groups.

According to cultural sociologists, these traumas arise out of shocks to the routine or the taken for granted. Understanding such traumas is critical for developing solutions that can address group suffering. Using the African American community’s response to the not guilty verdict in the Emmett Till murder trial as a case study, this article extends cultural trauma theory by explicating how cultural traumas can arise not only when routines are disrupted but also when they are maintained and reaffirmed in a public or official manner. In so doing, this article analyzes the interplay between the history or accumulation of the “routine” harm at issue, the shocking or unusual occurrences that frequently precede such “routine” harms, the harm itself, and public discourse about such harm’s meaning in cultivating a cultural trauma narrative. The Return to Values in Recent Sociological Theory
PIOTR SZTOMPKA Jagiellonian University The Return to Values in Recent Sociological Theory Abstract: The author reviews two opposite traditional positions on the role of values and value judgements in sociological research and theory: treating values as a bias interfering in research, or treating values as ideology providing privileged access to knowledge. He traces the recent revival of the debate about valuations, focusing particularly on the claims of the so-called “public sociology.” Then the author’s own position is outlined based on the fundamental particularity of the social sciences as contrasted with the natural sciences. The old argument that values do not follow from facts is acknowledged as true in the sense of logical deduction, but in the social sciences we encounter different mechanism of implication, which may be called “sociological syllogism:” values may follow from facts, and facts may imply values because, on the one hand, people act on their axiological beliefs, and human actions constitute social facts, and on the other hand, social facts (e.g. about poverty, inequality, degradation, crime, terrorism) mobilize moral impulses and valuational commitments. In other words values shape meanings of human actions and resulting social facts, and the knowledge of facts acquires valuational meaning by mobilizing human axiological impulses. The strict separation of facts and values does not work in the social sciences; there is a two-directional link between the two. This opens the possibility for “sociological ethics” deriving normative standards of social life from the research results of sociology. Józefa Tischnera w Krakowie nr 2/3, 131-153 2008 Piotr Sztompka* THE AMBIVALENCE OF SOCIAL CHANGE IN POST-COMMUNIST SOCIETIES Why ambivalence? Because the story of the almost eighteen years since the collapse of communism has been told in two opposing ways. The optimistic, heroic narratives describe an epochal success of countries that have come a long way from Soviet satellites to members of the European Union and Atlantic Al liance; the process of liberation, emancipation, modernization, Europeanization, Westernization. The pessimistic, gloomy narratives see the same process as the sequence of failures, excessive social hardships, growing inequalities, survivals of communism, unfinished revolution. But in social life, nothing is entirely white or completely black; as Ulrich Beck likes to put it, “either/or” thinking has to be replaced by “both/and” logic (Beck, 2006). And, as will be shown in this talk, there is a grain of truth in both pictures. Hence - ambivalence. But let us begin at the beginning. The anti-communist revolution and post-revolutionary dilemmas In the year 1989, the world changed in East-Central Europe. It was a year of miracles. Several countries liberated themselves from the grip of the Soviet empire, and soon the empire itself disintegrated and collapsed. These studies have two characteristic features: a long research tradition and a clear cultural perspective. The research tradition is much longer than polls on col- lective memory, which go back to the 1960s and are identified with sociolo- gists like Barbara Szacka, Andrzej Szpociński and Piotr Kwiatkowski as suc- cessors of Nina Assorodobraj-Kula’s ideas. It is a tradition deeply associated with a Durkheimian legacy, which is very strong in Poland both in the pre-war as well as in post-war period. The well known book by Maurice Halbwachs, Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire (1969 [1925]), and works of other Durkheimi- ans, among them, Stefan Czarnowski, were for many decades the main source of inspiration and ideas concerning social memory and its functioning. Chapter 12 Coming in from the Cold: My Road from Socialism to Sociology Piotr Sztompka The Spy Who Came in from the Cold —Title of a John LeCarré novel You’ve come a long way, baby —Slogan on a 1970s Virginia Slims cigarettes advertising poster, portraying a beautiful, apparently liberated young woman smoking blissfully My Pre-Sociological Adolescence My path to sociology was not unswerving. As a child, the only son of a famous Polish concert pianist, I was naturally destined for a musical career. Indeed, I received an elementary musical education, but soon decided that my many and diverse interests precluded an exclusive focus on practicing piano at which, frankly, I was not too good. My reading of newspapers and spy stories was accompanied by a fascination with politics and sports, as well as astronomy, physics, and geography. I dreamt of Deflem Book.indb 189 19/12/2006 12:31:50 190 Sociologists in a Global Age traveling across the world. Lastly, my hobby—which paid off some fifty years later in visual sociology classes—was photography; a Soviet Zorki 4, an ingenious replica of the famous Leica, was my favorite toy. Poland at that time, in the 1950s, was not an open society, neither in the Popperian sense, nor in the simple geographical sense. However, my father, being an artist, was among the privileged few who were allowed to travel abroad. Returning from each successive concert tour, he would bring home the breath of fresh air the wider world offered: stories of prosperity, freedom, a joie de vivre, full stores, and smiling people.
