  • Letter and Report
University at Buffalo State University of New York Department of Computer Science and Engineering January 13, 2013 Emil Sutovsky, President BartlomiejMacieja, General Secretary Association of Chess Professionals Dear Emil, Bartek, and ACP Board Members: I am writing out of general concern at the increased spectre of cheating at chess, and from particular concern about issues of due process. It is prompted by current reports [1,2,3] and public discussion of the allegations against Mr. Borislav Ivanov from the 2012 Zadar Open, which was held last Dec. 16{22. In these reports, and in posts by other bloggers and commenters [4,5,6,7], the main evidence comprises tests of moves with computer chess programs, and assertions about the frequency of the played move `matching' the program's first choice (or first few choices), alongside ideas about unlikelihood of rating-performance fluctuations. None of these tests so far presented meets scientific needs of regular methodology, reproducibility, bases for comparison, or confidence intervals for conclusions. However, the need for such tests is recognized by many, no less the esteemed Leonard Barden, in his comments to the ChessVibes story [1] which appear immediately afterward at the top. Barden called for a test of Mr. Ivanov's nine games at the 2012 Zadar Open with \Houdini or another top program." I have worked on meeting these needs since October 2006, in co-operation with others including Guy Haworth of Reading University (UK) [8,9,10]. My appended report shows the workings and significance of my procedure. There has been wide concern about due process [11].

  • Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 3 Report: Thursday 26 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) How to Draw with Your Dad Nine players – Mickey Adams (England), Nikita Vitiugov, Vadim Zvjaginsev (both Russia), Sam Shankland (USA), Eduardo Iturrizaga (Venezuela), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Maxime Lagarde (France), Kacper Piorun (Poland) and Ju Wenjun (China) – share the lead on 3/3 after another tough round of chess in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar. The elite 2700+ players are still finding it very hard to impose themselves on the group of players rated 200 or 300 points below. Veselin Topalov picked up this point in his master class on Wednesday, stating that these days there is little or no difference in the quality of the first 10 to 15 opening moves between 2300-rated players and the elite. So the big names have to work harder to get their points, perhaps adopting a Carlsen-style approach, avoiding long, forcing lines in the opening and outplaying their opponents in endgames. This has been exemplified in Gibraltar by the only two 2700+ rated players to figure in the group on 3/3, namely Adams and Vitiugov, who have been grinding out the wins in long games. Mickey Adams ground out a long win against Bogdan-Daniel Deac (Romania) Perhaps the most enjoyable game for the audience in round three was the battle between Peter Svidler and Nitzan Steinberg. The 18-year-old IM from Israel has made quite an impression in Gibraltar, drawing with the second seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and now the sixth seed.

  • Round 5 Report: Saturday 28 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@Johnchess)
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 5 Report: Saturday 28 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) Disco Stu and the Battle of the Sexes The middle Saturday of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival is dominated by the Battle of the Sexes match between elite teams of men and women – more on that further down – but before the evening extravaganza there was still the matter of round five of the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters to be negotiated. After the game between the two leaders, Emil Sutovsky (Israel) and Ju Wenjun (China) ended in a fairly brief draw, the door was opened to other players to catch up with them. By the close of play, four players managed to join the two aforementioned players on 4½/5, namely Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Mickey Adams (England), David Anton Guijarro (Spain) and Maxime Lagarde (France). As well as the above, David Howell at one point seemed poised to give Maxime Vachier-Lagrave a hard time and join the leaders when he gave up a pawn for considerable positional compensation but he lost his way somewhere along the line. It's worth checking out his informative post-game interview posted on the tournament's official YouTube channel for further details. Michael Adams playing Hou Yifan in round five. Beyond them, Boris Gelfand is seen playing David Anton. England's highest rated player has brought his a-game to Gibraltar. In round five he was paired with women's world champion Hou Yifan, who was playing her first male opponent of the tournament.
