Last Saturday, Kansas University lost on the road to a talented South Florida team that’s likely to win the Big East. Numerous weaknesses were exposed. Coach Mangino’s biggest problems are his offensive and defensive lines. Both lines have flaws, but the lack of a defensive pass rush is the main cause for concern. After the game, Mangino said, “We have to be able to get to the quarter- back with the four-man rush . . . we’re not doing that.” This was KU’s biggest shortcoming last season and it hasn’t changed. And it isn’t likely to because the Jayhawks don’t have any big-time pass rushers. The offensive line played poorly. QB Todd Reesing spent the night running for his life while trying to pass; most of his completions were amazing because of the lack of pass blocking. Kansas has no running game and that’s because the OL isn’t getting it done. But this is one area where the Jayhawks can improve considerably in a short time. The running back picture cleared a bit. Jocques Crawford (6-1, 225) is going to spend a lot of time on the sideline help- ing Mangino coach because he doesn’t like to block. In the third quarter, Crawford was responsible for Reesing being mauled when he put an olé block on USF’s DE George Selvie. Crawford could have taken him head on, but he chose to step aside after a feeble attempt at a block. And Reesing paid the price, getting smashed by Selvie. It appears that Angus Quigley (6-2, 222) is going to be the main RB, with Jake Sharp (5-10, 190) playing a role similar to last season. Sharp’s willing to block the big linemen, but he isn’t phys- ically capable of blocking 270-pound lineman for 40 or 50 minutes. Where will KU go from here? Much depends on how much the OL improves.
