Halloween ...is it ok for Christians to participate? By Pastor Ron McGee hristians in America are being destroyed and seeing their children turn away from the things of God because of a lack of C knowledge. They are rejecting knowledge that is available and are entering into activities that are expressly forbidden in the Word of God. Do you know the facts? Halloween is one of those activities. As you will see, the origin of this holiday predates the Church by many centuries. 2000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, in the Celtic countries of “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because Ireland, England, France and Germany, savage primitive festivals were you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being celebrated under the direction of Druid priests. The Druids were being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of satanic priests whose origins go back to Old Testament days. The night of October 31st was the chief festival, the Festival of Samhain. Samhain was your God, I also will forget your children.” Hosea 4:6 none other than Satan himself, their lord of death. It came at the end of summer when all the leaves and vegetation were dying and cold weather was coming. Their god of darkness was winning out over the god of “Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who summer and light. It was the beginning of their new year. On that night, hates reproof is stupid.” Proverbs 12:1 Samhain assembled the souls of all those who had died during the year. Because of their sins, they had until that night been confined to the bodies of lower animals. During the festival of Samhain, their sins would be forgiven and their souls were allowed to enter Druid Heaven. The festival consisted of a large bonfire and burnt offering sacrifices to Samhain. These sacrifices were intended to appease their lord of death so he would not deal harshly with them during the long winter season. Human and animal sacrifices were suspended over the fire in wicker buckets until consumed. While this was taking place the people danced and chanted to the beat of Druid music. Most were dressed in animal costumes. As the fire subsided, fortunes were told over the remaining bones. Because of their satanic powers, the Druid priests were greatly feared by all the people. The people participated because the priests would go to the castles and villages asking for Trick or Treat. The treat was giving them a virgin to be sacrificed. The trick was placing a hexagram on the door of the castle or house if no virgin was given. The hexagram would call in evil spirits to kill someone inside. We get the saying of placing a “hex” on someone from this practice. To protect those who provided a virgin for sacrifice, the Druid priests would leave a lantern carved out of a turnip or potato, with a grotesque face and a candle made of human fat. This lantern was placed by the door or in the window to ward off the evil spirits. In some areas, the local people rounded up all known criminals each year to be offered as human sacrifices. Horses, cows and black cats were also offered up to Samhain. The wicker or thatch cages were often shaped in the form of recognition to become saints. The October 31st Festival continued and was renamed All animals or giants. In 43 AD, Rome conquered the area and in 61 AD Roman law forbade Hallows’ Evening Festival... later shortened to Hallows’ Even... Hallow’en... and finally the practice of human sacrifice. The Roman Catholic Church thus took in a pagan festival and declared it The Romans celebrated two fall festivals that were quickly combined with the Festival of Christian, just as Rome had declared it’s people Christian. Bonfire Night What Is Bonfire Night? Bonfire Night remembers the failed attempt to kill the King of England and the important people of England as they gathered for the State Opening of Parliament on 5th November 1605. Bonfires were lit that first night in a joyful celebration of the King being saved. As the years went by, the burning of straw dummies representing Guy Fawkes was a reminder that traitors would never successfully overthrow a king. The Gunpowder Plot After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, the English Catholics were led to believe that the Act of terrorism: new King, James I, would be more accepting Deliberate attempt to kill of them. However, he was no more welcoming or injure many innocent of Catholic people than the previous ruler people for religious or which led some people to wish he was off the political gain. throne to allow a Catholic to rule the country. A small group of Catholic men met to discuss what could be done and their leader, Robert Catesby, was keen to take violent action. Their plan was to blow up the Houses of Parliament, killing many important people who they did not agree with. This was an act of terrorism. They planned to kill all of the leaders who were making life difficult for the Catholic people. They recruited a further eight men to help with the plot but as it took form, some of the group realised that many innocent people would be killed, including some who supported the Catholic people. This led some of the men to begin to have doubts about the whole plot.

From Decadent Diabolist to Roman Catholic Demonologist: Some Biographical Curiosities from Montague Summers’ Black Folio Bernard Doherty Introduction The history and practice of black magic, witchcraft, and Satanism have long held a deep fascination in British—and indeed international—popular culture. Beginning with the gothic literature of the eighteenth century, through to the nineteenth century occult revival and Victorian “penny dreadful,” and then into twentieth century pulp fiction, tales of the supernatural involving maleficent magic have been authored some of Britain’s most popular—if not always critically acclaimed—writers including, among others M. R. James, Arthur Machen, William Somerset Maugham, Agatha Christie, Charles Williams, and Dennis Wheatley. These writers, as well as various other short story writers, novelists, and journalists, have all played an important role in shaping, recording, and reflecting popular beliefs about these topics. Indeed, not a few occult practitioners, most notably Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Gerald Gardner, and Doreen Valiente, even turned their hands to writing popular occult fiction. Despite this, the frequent blurring of the often porous boundary between actual occult practices and groups, and the imagined worlds of the purveyors of popular and literary fiction, has been seldom explored outside of highly specialised academic literature dedicated to the history of gothic or weird fiction and the burgeoning study of what has come to be called Western Esotericism.1 Bernard Doherty is a lecturer in the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University. 1 See, for example, Nick Freeman, ‘The Black Magic Bogeyman 1908–1935’, in The Occult Imagination in Britain, 1875–1947, ed. religions Article The Devil’s Music: Satanism and Christian Rhetoric in the Lyrics of the Swedish Heavy Metal Band Ghost P.C.J.M. (Jarell) Paulissen Department of Biblical Sciences and Church History, Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, P.O. Box 90153, 5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands; [email protected] Abstract: This paper is an inquiry into a contemporary heavy metal band from Sweden called Ghost. Ghost released its first studio album in 2010 and, while there is some discussion as to what their genre is exactly, they immediately became a rising star in the metal scene. Yet what is of particular interest from a storytelling point of view, especially with regard to theological answers to philosophical questions in popular culture, is that the band presents itself as a satanic version of the Catholic Church through their stage act and lyrics. This made me curious whether they are trying to convey a message and, if yes, what that message might be. For the present paper, I have focused on the latter by performing a non-exhaustive textual analysis of the lyrics in a selection of songs from each of the four studio albums released so far. Ghost turns Christian liturgy on its head by utilizing devout language that is normally reserved for God and Christ to describe Satan and the Antichrist, a strategy I have called the ”satanification” of Christian doctrine, and in doing so their songs evoke imagery of a satanic faith community at prayer. The band then uses this radical inversion of traditional Christian themes to criticize certain elements of society, especially those aspects they associate with organized religion.

According to a Noosa Today article, the state of Queensland is about to host its first public Black Mass, hosted by the Noosa Temple of Satan. I’ve been to Noosa once before and it’s a great spot. Beautiful beach and Noosa Springs is one of the best golf courses I’ve ever played. (Not a huge fan of paying $30 for breakfast on Hastings Street, but that comes with the territory) The organiser (who I won’t care to name) is a self proclaimed political activist who heads a group that seeks to achieve a number of things by partaking in the occult. One of them is to encourage “political awareness” and “combating religious authorities in politics”. So he’s a political activist using religion to have religion banned from politics. Interesting. What else they seek to promote was not at all surprising to me, though I was surprised at how brazenly honest they were. They would like to see “greater access to reproductive health (read: abortion) and euthanasia and the decriminalization of illegal drug use…” This is where this group actually gets it right.

That a priest should put on record his private thoughts about the Mass-there is nothing extravagant in that. But mine were put on record in a highly specialized art-form, that of sermons to school-girls; and this form they still impenitently wear. There are films which a child can frequent only by pretending to be an adult. Here are pages which an adult can enjoy only by pretending to be a child. Nisi efficiamini sicut parvuli . The sermons were preached to the convent school of the Assumption Sisters, which was " evacuated " during the late war from Kensington to Aldenham Park in Shropshire. They appeared afterwards in The Tablet, much abridged; by reducing them to less than half their original size, it was possible to give them the air of a contribution designed for that paper. They are now offered to the public almost in their original form. The few excisions which have been made were made reluctantly; no word I had written but recalled some memory not lightly exor cised, and I will not pretend to have finished the business of proof-reading altogether dry-eyed.
