ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, SHEDFIELD SHEDFIELD - SHIRRELL HEATH - WALTHAM CHASE

All I want for Christmas…’ from the Beneice ministry team Stephen Campion (Authorised Lay Minister): When I was a teenager, every year I gave my grandfather an expensive (at least for me) large Cuban cigar for Christmas. He would open it, roll it round his ingers, smell the rich aroma and then put it back into its protective container – always thanking me for his present. When he died my mother found 14 Cuban cigars hidden away in his desk! If there is a moral to this story it may well be that although generosity is always to be thanked, so too is it important to be honest – even at the risk of causing initial embarrassment. Christmas reminds me how much pleasure can be gained by the giving of presents as well as receiving them. I’m happy to provide my Christmas wish-list to anyone who asks! But Christmas also reminds me of that precious gift that God gave all of us – the gift of His Son and the man He grew up to be. All I want for Christmas is that we celebrate Christmas for what it is; not the busy-ness, stress or hype that seems to start as long ago as September, but for the joy, love and hope that comes from the birth of Jesus Christ. What I really want is for us to be honest and true to the real meaning of Christmas. Revd Dr Ruth Howlett-Shipley (Assistant Curate): I love all the preparations for Christmas; at church, in our church schools and with my own children. However, it does require a certain amount of juggling! I’m particularly looking forward to the evening of Christmas Day when I’ll have all my family together. Although we’re a small family it’s very rare for all of us to be in the same place at once. Having been at Christ- mas morning services in the Beneice, I’ll dash over to Salisbury, where my daughter Annabel sings in the choir. We’ll have a picnic lunch with the other choir families, and then after Evensong we’ll drive home (com- plete with a stocking full of small gifts from the other choristers to ‘entertain’ me in the car!). Then we’ll have a quiet evening, enjoying being together. The family traditions of presents, Christmas lunch and the inevita- ble board games happen on Boxing Day! I look forward to that special family time. However, I’m also very conscious that, for many reasons, large numbers of people are not able to be with their family at Christmas. Whether this is due to family breakdown, bereavement, the need to work over the festive period or for military families the deployment of a family member, I pray that they’ll all ind a way to celebrate Christmas in their own way, and in a way that will bring them peace and happiness. Revd Juliet Montague (Associate Priest): All I want for Christmas is…snow on Christmas Day. I appreciate that it makes dificulties of its own, but to look out on a blanket of fresh snow sparkling in the sunlight reminds us how beautiful nature can be, and transports many of us older folk back to our childhood days when snow was more frequent. In the season of gift giving, it would help us all to relect on how much our wonderful planet gives to us with its beauty and its diversity and inspire us to give something back. Let’s take a little less from our environment, and tread lightly upon the earth, so that future generations may enjoy snow at Christmas. Revd Jane Isaac (Vicar): All I wanted for Christmas 1965 was a Chad Valley Give-a Show projector! ‘Use it in the car, on the wall or the ceiling’, it said on the box: ‘…just drop the story strips into the projector and turn the knob to focus’. Hmm: it didn’t take a disappointed 6-year-old long to realise that the much-anticipated home cinema was basically a torch! Nonetheless, my long-suffering parents sat through many a showing of Doctor Who and the Daleks, Popeye, Thunderbirds Rescue and (less popular, this one) Moments in History, complete with choc-ices in the interval. This year I’m hoping that a cinema gift-card might come my way! I’m hoping too for the gift of viewing Christmas through the eyes of the people who were there that irst time around. I’m hoping to see, as Mary did, how important it is to put down my own plans and agendas so that I can see the big picture too. I’ll make sure to notice the understanding of the innkeeper, who was rushed off his feet but still made time to help a man and woman no one else wanted. I’ll be asking God to help me catch a glimpse of the glory the angels experienced as they saw Jesus’s birth from their perspective of eternity. And I’ll share the wonder of the shepherds and the awe of the wise men as they gazed at that baby lying in the manger. Church Diary for the Beneice of Shedield and Wickham December 2019. Your Invitation from the Vicar

I’ve always liked the story about the three-year-old who really got into his role as the inn-keeper in the nursery school’s nativity. Rather than turning Mary and Joseph away when they came to the door, he greeted them with a grin and beck- oned to them, saying, ‘Come on in, there’s loads of room!’. It does put a different gloss on a signiicant element of the story, although there is no inn-keeper mentioned in the Bible. What’s for sure is that God’s love is for everyone and the message of Christmas really is ‘Come on in, there’s loads of room!’.

Christmas services at St John the Baptist Church are an opportunity to come on in, and that’s an invitation for everyone, whether you live in Shedield, Shirrell Heath or Waltham Chase, and whether you come to church every week, every so often or not at all. One way or another, there’ll be something for everyone, ranging from the traditional Lessons and Carols by Candlelight on Sunday 22nd December and the ever-popular Christingle service on Christmas Eve (with a choc- olate-themed story this year) to early morning communion and family-friendly services on Christmas Day.

All of us in the ministry team send you every good wish for a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year – and enjoy our ‘All I want for Christmas’ wish list on page 3!

Revd. Jane Isaac Some of Our Church Bible Readings for Advent and Christmas.

Sunday 1st December 1st Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 2.1-5 Isaiah gives us a vision of the Peace of God never yet fully realised. The apostle Paul urges us to abandon sole pursuit of pleasure and behave with Romans 13.11-end decency. Matthew quotes Jesus, describing how, when the Son of Man returns, Matthew 24.36-44 it will be unexpected so we must be prepared for sudden changes in our lives.

Sunday 8th December 2nd Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 11:1-10 Isaiah foretells the emergence, like a shoot from a fallen tree, of a great ruler who will transform society to bring justice and peace to the world. Paul Romans 15.4-13 writing to the Romans reminds us that the hope and encouragement in the Matthew 3.1-12 scriptures are for Jews and Gentiles alike. Matthew tells of the life and work of St John the Baptist with his message of repentance.

Sunday 15th December 3rd Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 35.1-10 This passage from Isaiah is a lovely poem of the beauty of God’s creation providing a path to a bright future. Apostle James tells us to be patient whilst James 5.7-10 waiting for the future to be fulfilled and to be calm with our friends and Matthew 11.2-11 family. Matthew quotes Jesus confirming he is the Messiah and that John the Baptist is his herald.

Sunday 22nd December 4th Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 7.10-16 Isaiah tells of a woman pregnant of a son who will be called Emmanuel ‘God with us’, by the time the child is weaned present danger will be past. Paul Romans 1.1-7 starts his letter to the Romans by saying he has a mission to declare the Matthew 1.18-end resurrected Jesus as the Son of God. Matthew tells us of the conception of Jesus to Mary and Joseph’s acceptance of this and his naming of Jesus.

24th December Christmas Eve

Isaiah 9.2-7 Isaiah describes the change brought about the birth of Christ; Paul writes to Titus explaining how the appearance of Christ sets us free from wickedness Titus 2.11-14 and eager to do good; Luke explains how Jesus, born to a Nazarene, comes to Luke 2.1-14 be born in Bethlehem, an angel appears to shepherds announcing the birth.

25th December Christmas Day

Isaiah 62.6-end Isaiah speaks of the time when the Jews return to Jerusalem to start rebuilding the temple. When we celebrate the birth of Christ, Paul Titus 3.4-7 summarises the Christian Faith succinctly. In Luke’s Gospel, the shepherds Luke 2.8-20 discover Jesus by following the angel’s directions.

5th January Epiphany

Isaiah 60.1-6 Isaiah exhorts the people to use God’s gifts. Apostle Paul tells us that his mission is to bring Good News of the riches of Christ to all people, not only Ephesians 3.1-12 the Jews. Matthew’s Gospel tells how the wise men had set out, guided by a Matthew 2.1-12 star, to find the Child who would become King asking Herod the way before finding the child and giving gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Warned in a dream they return by another way.

These are my comments, I write to inspire you to read the passage for yourself or perhaps to come to church to hear them, Editor.

Hallo everyone! I am Joseph Tembo. My wife Anna and I are, the now proverbial, “newest kids on the block” having arrived in the Meon Valley on the 18th of September this year. We have received a lot of lovely warm welcomes from everyone here. Prior to our arriv- al, a lot of work was done by so many people to make sure we came to a comfortable Š‘‡Ǥ —” ‰ƒ”†‡ ™ƒ• ƒŽŽ •‘”–‡†ǡ ™‡ ™‡”‡ ˆ‡† ˜‡”› ™‡ŽŽ ‘ ‘—” ϐ‹”•– †ƒ›ǡ ƒ† Šƒ† supplies provided for the next few days as we settled in and learnt how to get to places to buy what we needed. Thank you to those who worked hard and welcomed us to this wider community, which we are already liking very much. The people have already been wonderful to us. Anna and I cannot wait to celebrate Christmas here. When I was growing up as a child in Zambia, there were only three periods or dates that I clearly knew. They were Christmas, New Year and Independence Day. Surprisingly, the year took so long to come back to those particular days. ƒŽ™ƒ›•™ƒ–‡†–Š‡ƒ††‡ϐ‹‹–‡Ž›Ž‘‘‡†ˆ‘”™ƒ”†–‘Dz–Š‡dz†ƒ›•–—”‹‰—’ƒ‰ƒ‹ǤŠ‹•™ƒ•„‡ ƒ—•‡™Š‡–Š‡› ƒ‡ around there were certain things to expect; good things, exciting things and rarities. To me these times heralded an abundance of food, drinks, family, friends, fun on a social note, and the mid-night Christ- mas-Eve service. To all this was a BIG HOWEVER - each Christmas I had to have brand new clothes and a pair of shoes. Never mind the fact that in January I also needed new school uniforms, books and school fees. I just had to have new clothes. Admittedly, Christmas is about a uniquely special spiritual message that offers humanity a change of life and a new relationship with God and other people – about the birth of Jesus Christ, the only Saviour of the world. Nevertheless, this does not deny the fact that Christmas also carries the element of anticipation for us; and in view of this, we must think about so many people up and down the UK and across the world who have this anticipation, and yet they are not able to buy food, drinks or new clothes. Because they lack money, they cannot buy Christmas Cards to express their joy that Christmas cards convey, and they cannot buy Christmas gifts for their loved ones. It is also likely that they will not see their families or friends because they cannot host them or have no means of travel- ling to them. This sometimes evokes emotions – deep feelings – a “lump in the throat” – a yearning for family or friends. –‹•ϐ‹‡–‘„‡‡‘–‹‘ƒŽƒ„‘—––Š‹•Ǥ‘–‹‘••‘‡–‹‡•‡ƒ–Šƒ–›‘—ƒ”‡„‡‰‹‹‰–‘ˆ‡‡Ž™‹–Š–Š‘•‡‹‡‡†ƒ† that you care, because Christmas is about caring. God cared so much about our sinful spiritual state that he did something about it by giving us Jesus as a gift from himself. We too must show some care for others this Christmas. In the Christmas birth story of our Lord Jesus Christ, we read about the Inn Keeper. This person cared so much for Mary, Joseph and the baby to come; that he troubled Š‹•‡Žˆ–‘ϐ‹†ǡƒ†–‘‘ˆˆ‡”ƒ”›ƒ† ‘•‡’Š–Š‡–”‘—‰Š‹ƒ•Š‡†™Š‡”‡ƒ‹ƒŽ•™‡”‡‡’–ƒ†ˆ‡†ǤŠ‹•™ƒ•ƒŽŽŠ‡Šƒ†ǡ and he gave it up to them for the birth of the Son of God. Allow me to thank you for all your generous and kind gifts you have given to people at home here in the UK and over- seas. I may be right to think that some of you might have already started preparing to give through shoe boxes. Thank you for this and other ways in which you will be showing your love and care this Christmas. Care this Christmas to meet anticipation. Happy Christmas to you all, in Christ Jesus,

Revd Joseph Tembo.

Eco Tip Dec 19 – Jan 2020. Coming to the end of a momentous 2019, which will be remembered in history as the year when the whole world community realised the impact of Man on our Planet and when we all appreciate that our way of life needs to change to avert disaster. I was recently asked at a party what I had been doing to try to reduce my impact on the environment and I found ‹–†‹ˆϐ‹ —Ž––‘”‡‡Ž‘ˆˆƒŽ‹•–‘ˆ•‘‡‘ˆ–Š‡–Š‹‰•–Šƒ– Šƒ˜‡‡–‹‘‡†–Š”‘—‰Š–Š‡›‡ƒ”‹–Š‹• ‘Ž—Ǥ So, I suggest as we approach Christmas, that you think of changes you have made, however small, to reduce your environmental footprint under the headings of REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE. PURPLE. There’s been a lot in the news recently about Rotary and the world-wide Polio eradication programme. The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s world- wide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the inger of a child who has been immunised. Thursday 24th Of October was world Polio day and saw BW Rotarians get together, wearing purple

DAVID MCLEAN, ex-mayor of Winchester, gave a stimulating talk to BW Rotary about his year as mayor. David attended some 5,000 events in his year in ofice and raised substantial funds for local charities.

DISPLACED SYRIANS AND SHELTERBOX. Due to the recent military offensive by Turkey in Syria, ShelterBox quickly called for help to support the people who, yet again, have to lee their homes: a full-page advertisement in The Daily Telegraph on October the 11th highlighted the plight of the people caught up in this. BW Rotary sent £1,180.00 for 2 ShelterBoxes, knowing that this will cover some of those items most needed by displaced people. Each ShelterBox contains a range of survival items: tent, cooking equipment, tool kit, water containers, mosquito nets, water- proof ground mats, thermal leece blankets, solar light and other useful things.

HELPING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. The Tall Ships Youth Trust, based in Portsmouth, is a charity whose mission is to enable young people aged 12-25 to fulil their life potential through genuinely life changing adventures at sea; their extensive Adult Voyage programme, for ages 18-80, helps to fund the youth development work. BWRC recently supported this work with a cheque for £300.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS IN BW. Here it is: what you have been waiting for; the dates for BW Rotary touring the district with Father Christmas. The streets listed in the right-hand column are just a general indication of the area to be covered on that evening.

Christmas is coming and Santa has a shiny new Sleigh… Unbelievably, we already ind ourselves on the downhill run to Christmas! The Meon Valley Lions Club is well advanced with planning Santa’s tour of the Meon Valley villages. The Lions have been extra busy this year, along with Santa’s helpers, building him a shiny new sleigh ready for this year’s fun! It’s going to be a big surprise, so see if you can spot the difference when he comes to visit you. Santa and the Lions will be out and about throughout the month of December, with visits to all the villages from East and at the top of the valley, to Wickham, and Knowle at the bottom. He’ll also be on duty on the Saturday mornings running up to Christmas at Wickham Square, Bishops Waltham High Street and Swanmore Village Store. It takes a lot of time and effort helping Santa over the three-and-a-half-week period and we are always grateful for extra Santa Helpers, so if you are able-bodied and fancy helping us as a volunteer, we’d be grateful to hear from you. The full Santa sleigh schedule will be published on the special Santa page on this website: www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/santa We raised over £4,500 last year so let’s see if we can raise more this year! Lions Swanmore Fete - Saturday July 11th 2020, save the date! While we are in forward-mode, dreaming of Santa and wishing away 2019, spare a thought for the organising committee who are already working on plans for the Lions’ Swanmore Fete 2020. We want to make it as big and fun as previous years and following the huge success of the Dog Show last year, we will be running this again next year. The rest of the program will be published through our news updates and on our website. Helping locals… The Club Members have been extra busy this month, not only fund raising, but the green-ingered amongst us got together to give some much-needed gardening help at the Rainbow Centre. We also turned out to help marshal the Portsmouth Memory Walk run by the Alzheimer’s Society and the Solent Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride to raise funds for prostate cancer. The money we raise goes to help local people and clubs and in recent months we have given inancial help for several clubs in the Bishops Waltham area; we have supported the Monday Lunch Club, the Wednesday Lunch Club, Brendon Care Tues- day Club and the new Men's Shed Project. All are clubs offering important compan- ionship and activities for older citizens, reducing isolation and loneliness. All are well worth attending if you live in that area. Join in the fun … It’s not all about fund raising! We have a monthly pub night and at least one social event each month. We went to the Swanmore C of E Primary School irework display and then got together for a hearty supper to warm us up. We are always for looking for new members so if any or all the above appeals to you please get in contact via our website: www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/_contact

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS, THE MEON VALLEY FOOD BANK TEAM 2019 Last year we ran a very successful Reverse Advent Calendar campaign. This proved to be so successful that we were still receiving food parcels well into January. The amazing number of parcels we received meant we ran out of storage space at the Youth Hall. So, this year we thought we’d try something a little different. What we would greatly appreciate is if we could receive some Christmas goody bags to give out to our clients before Christmas. You might want to consider a Twelve Days of Christmas theme, putting together a bag or box that would include items like: Small Christmas Puds. Mince pies Custard Hot chocolate Twiglets Mini cheddars Crisps Popcorn Christmas chocolates Christmas biscuits Mini marshmallows Mystery item! We would love to receive your goody bags either on December 3rd or December 10th. You can either leave them at your usual drop off point (e.g. St J. t B., Shedield) or at the Youth Club in Malt Ln, Bishop's Waltham, Southampton SO32 1PT, which will be open 10.am to 3pm on Tuesdays 3rd, 10th and 17th December and for a short time on the morning of Christmas Eve. Please check that all donations are in date and do not wrap them too well as the Food Bank Team will need to check all items before we can distribute them. Thank you for your continued support. Mary Wake SHEDFIELD WI

For our October meeting, we were taken on a journey through Canada and Alaska. Jenny Carter, a friend of Shedield WI, brought lovely photographs of her recent trip so we were able to enjoy scenes of Toronto, Niagara Falls, Quebec, the Banff Mountains, Lake Louise, Vancouver Island and the Butchart Gardens and then on to the glaciers and the beauty of Alaska. Jenny also brought impressive art work, inspired by her travels, and we came away feeling uplifted and certainly more knowledgeable about this beautiful area of the world. The Hampshire WI Autumn meeting was held at the Anvil, Basingstoke and, as usual, was well supported by Hampshire members. In the morning there were two speakers. First was Jane Whitbread who founded School Readers, a charity which helps bring adults into schools to listen to children read. Even now, one in four children leave school without an expected standard of reading. Our second speaker was Sally Becker, also known as ‘The Angel of Mostar’ for her tireless work bringing children out of war-torn areas in Bosnia and Kosovo. She founded the charity - Road to Peace. After lunch, we were treated to a tribute singer, so we ended the day singing along to Tom Jones and Neil Diamond. We all left in high spirits to ill the carriages of the 4pm train, much to the amusement of the guard and, possibly, the other passengers! We are, of course, looking forward to the Christmas activities. The WI Group Carol Service will be held at St Peter’s Church, Bishops Waltham on December 2nd at 2.30pm. Our own December meeting will be on the 11th at 2pm. Howev- er, before our usual Christmas festivities in the Reading Room, we will be gathering at the Shedield War Memorial to witness the planting of a tree to commemorate the centenary of the Shedield WI, to be celebrated in 2020. Our 100th Birthday Party will be held on January 15th, an important date for our diaries.

WALTHAM CHASE WI

October is one of our Social evenings without a Speaker to spend time catching up with friends and getting to know our new members. We played a very competitive game of Beetle, which seems to bring out the child in everyone and this was followed by wine cheese and biscuits. St John’s Church sent a card thanking Sue, Jan and Denise for their display for Harvest Festival; the ladies who arrange the display are happy to do it every year. Our October Jumble Sale went well and as usual the ‘leftovers’ were collected by the Heart Foundation and the social skittles which is open to friends and family was a very enjoyable evening. At our November meeting, Chris, our President welcomed Heather Wylde whose talk was “Anyone can paint a tiger – trust me”. We were given a sheet of paper with just the tiger’s eyes, an eraser and pencil. Instructions were given on how to create the tiger, by drawing all the black strips in; all were pleased with their drawing. The dark cold nights are upon us but we can look forward to our December meeting which is organised by a few of our members. We know we are having a secret Santa and making a table decoration in a jam jar, but have no idea what else they have in store. The Group Carol Service is being held at St Peter’s in Bishops Waltham, followed by mince pies and inally our New Year meal at the Lysees, Fareham in January. If you would like to join us, we are at the Village Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7pm.

WALTHAM CHASE CLASSIC CARS

Waltham Chase Village Hall meet, 10th Nov was a great day with about 50 turning up. Once again there were vehicles we had not seen before and some unusual vehicles at that. Weather was great although it started out black when I left home at 0815. At 11am we conducted a very short Remembrance Service complete with bugle and about 80 people stood by for the 2 mins silence. If you have a pride and joy tucked away, bring it out on the 2nd Sunday of the month to the Village Hall any time from 8.30. to 12.30. If you don’t have a classic vehicle, we would love to see you come and have a look around!

WICKHAM COMMUNITY CARE

Help residents of Wickham, Shedield and Waltham Chase by BECOMING A VOLUNTEER DRIVER. Over the last two months we have lost 4 drivers due to increasing age or health issues, so we desperately need to recruit some new drivers to be able to maintain the service we offer. We are keen to hear from potential Volunteer Drivers. Journeys generally involve GP or Hospital Appointments, or occasionally to go shopping locally and drivers are paid a mileage allowance of 45p/mile.

Many of the residents of Shedield and Waltham Chase who use the Wickham Doctors’ Surgery need transport. Wickham Community Care is also seeking to recruit new co-ordinators to answer the phone arranging for our Volunteer Drivers to provide lifts for people in the village.

Anyone interested in helping and inding out more please contact Sylvia Wells 01329 609245 or Heather Oswald 01329 835061 WALTHAM CHASE HISTORY GROUP

We welcomed back David Allport for our November meeting and his talk about The Battle of Trafalgar, which took place off the South-West coast of Spain on 21st October 1805. We were entertained with wonderful facts about the navy and The Victory. Did you know that the walls of The Victory are 2’ thick and used 6,000 trees in its building, of which 5,000 were oak? The sailors on board used square plates, with a rim around it called The Fiddle – which is where we get the phrases a square meal and on the iddle from!! The cook on board would often make dumplings from the fat they scrapped off of the cooking called ‘slush’, for which he would charge the sailors and so made his own little ‘slush fund’! We watched a brief ilm showing how the ships were used in a very different formation during the battle, which really caught the Spanish by surprise. The crew of The Victory were so well rehearsed during their voyage down to the Spanish coast that they could ire and recharge cannons every 90 seconds, truly remarkable. Our next meeting will have a more upbeat feel when we welcome the Soberton Strummers with some foot tapping music to cheer us on our way, followed by some festive nibbles! We look forward to welcoming you for 7.30pm at the Waltham Chase Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday, 3rd December. No need to book, just come along and pay £2.50 on the door, you will be most welcome. There is plenty of parking and the Hall is comfortable and warm.

Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, gives advice on reducing the cost of your energy bills during the winter months. I live with my two children and partner in a small semi-detached house. During the winter our heating and electricity bills shoot up. Do you have any tips on how I can keep the cost of my energy down during this period? There are a few things you can do to save some money during the winter months. Check when your energy contract is due to expire. If you're at the end of your contract use Energy Compare by Citizens Advice (energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk) to see if you could save money by switching supplier or tariff. If you're on a prepayment meter you could save money by replacing your meter with one that lets you pay after using energy rather than in advance. Most suppliers won’t charge you for removing a prepayment meter, though many will run a credit check or ask you for a deposit. You may also be eligible for certain grants and beneits; these could include Warm Home discount or help with energy debt. Contact your local Citizens Advice if you need help with the application. Here's a few practical tips to help keep costs down: 1. Using a timer for your heating, lowering your thermostat and using radiator valve controls could save you over £100 per year 2. Changing light bulbs to an energy-eficient one could save £50 over the lifetime of the bulb 3. Turn appliances off standby mode to save around £30 a year 4. Seal cracks in loors, skirting boards and add draft excluders to letterboxes, doors and windows. Some energy suppliers offer grants for improvements to your home, like insulation or a new boiler. The help you can get depends on your circumstances and what would help your home. You don’t need to be a customer of one of these suppliers to apply but you’ll need to check your eligibility, Visit www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk

WALTHAM CHASE PRE-SCHOOL www.walthamchasepreschool.weebly.com

We would like to say a massive thank you to Hylands in Bishops Waltham for supporting us with our pre-school in the community trip. They gave the children the opportunity to explore the shop and look at the different fruit and vegeta- bles. They were lucky and got to choose a piece of fruit each. We also visited the church, graveyard and library. The children explored the books and played with their Lego – many thanks. It’s lovely to have the support from the local community meaning we can take the children out to these enriching places. We had a very successful bonire breakfast and had amazing support from the parents who came with their children. We have a job vacancy for someone who is level 2 qualiied in early years, who would like to do their level 3 and need a setting to support this. If you are interested, please get in contact with the pre-school. We would like to remind the community that our garden that is attached to the village hall and is for pre-school use only. We have had a few resources broken which is really sad as now the children are missing out on playing with them. We kindly ask that you respect our garden and help us keep it safe. Thank you! REPORT TO SHEDFIELD RESIDENTS OCTOBER 2018 BY WINCHESTER CITY COUNCILLORS I am writing this article on Remembrance Day. It is the time of year when we relect on the sacriices made by so many people to preserve our futures. Vivian joined many of you at a Remembrance Service yesterday in Shedield. On Sunday evening I watched the latest David Attenborough programme which was devoted to South America and particularly highlighted the great amount of forest being lost every day. This loss is not good for the global climate nor the creatures whose habitat is lost. During the summer I was fortunate to spend two weeks in Costa Rica. For those of you with a keen interest in birds and other wildlife I can thoroughly recommend a visit. However, I raise this country as it boasts two factors relevant to my opening paragraphs. Costa Rica is one of the very few countries to have no army. It was demilitarised in 1949. Secondly Costa Rica produces at least 98% of its electricity from renewable sources. It is fortunate that its geography of coasts, mountains, volcanoes, rainfall make this possible but still a signiicant achievement. Another achievement is to reverse the loss of forest land in the country. In 1950 72% of the land was forested but by 1987 this was down to 21%. Today it has risen to 52%. I leave you to relect on what this country with a population of 5 million has achieved. With frosts starting, leaves still falling, we know that winter is almost here. Please do your usual good neighbourly work in looking after paths ditches and most importantly anyone who may need a helping hand. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and a happy New Year. Last month’s contribution from Roger was not printed - I suspect it was sent directly to my Spam folder – I am sorry this happened and publish it below. Winchester City Councillors Report for November Bin Collection 30th September One service we do regularly receive from Winchester City Council caused a little bother to residents on 30th September and the rest of the week. To residents who contacted me I did send an apology on behalf of WCC and to anyone else who was affected I repeat part of that apology below. On behalf of WCC I apologize to residents in my ward who have been totally confused by the sudden change in their bin collection rota, particularly those who have missed a collection which might cause them a problem with a build-up of rubbish. Residents should have received a few weeks ago a warning that the rota would change to include a glass collection. They should also have received a black box for their glass. This seems to have happened but the follow up letter and card containing the new rota was delayed in printing and hence distribution. I assume this will arrive shortly and all will be clear for next week’s round. We should all quickly adapt to the new rota not forgetting that collections are delayed by a day following a bank holiday! Shedield Parish Council also received complaints about work on the B2177 taking place at night without warning with diversion routes not really suitable for heavy lorries. It is unusual not to have fore warning but at least we should be grateful that some work is taking place. However, I doubt if anyone is pleased about the work at Culverlands Corner which a) does not look good b) seems to have little effect on trafic queues and c) has cut off pedestrian access. District and Parish Councillors will continue to seek improvements here. Last month’s full council meeting of Winchester City Council saw the introduction of ‘Residents Questions’. Several residents took advantage of the chance to question councillors and time was made to ensure that all were heard, and answers given. Later we hope to introduce live broadcasting. Most of the questions were about major projects in Winchester but hopefully residents from outside the city will join in soon. Brexit? The New Winchester Sport and Leisure Centre is continuing to take shape as those driving into Winchester can see…… apologies for those travelling in by car and held up by the works! Hampshire County Council - Going Green We’re making signiicant inancial and carbon savings with the introduction of zero emission vehicles for use by our StreetWorks team, inspecting utilities works, and in the day to day work of highways inspectors, engineers and techni- cians. The electric vehicles have a range of over 150 miles and will cost only 2p per mile to run, compared with the 13p cost per mile of the diesel vehicles they have replaced. Over the past decade, we’ve made over £30 million in carbon savings from our estate and operations. By the end of the year, 80 new electric car charging points will be installed across Hampshire, along with charging infrastructure at our ofices and depots. It is part of a programme to convert all our small vehicle leet to electric vehicles, helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality across Hampshire, and forms part of our wider commitment to embed environmen- tal considerations in all the work we do. These new highways vehicles are part of a total leet of 28 Nissan leaf vehicles plus 7 Nissan e-NV200 Vans we have in use, with plans to increase this as current leases expire. All these vehicles are supplied by Hampshire Transport Management who manage our transport leet. Do visit Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market which opened 21st November and runs to 22nd December 2019. It is recognised as one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe because of its unique location, high quality exhibitors and bustling atmosphere. In 2018 it was voted 2nd best in the UK by Booking.com and one of the top 8 Christmas Markets in Europe by the New York Post! (We love it; however, our personal advice is that if you go early in the day, from 10.00 - you miss the crowds). Many of the exhibitors will be attending for the full duration but some will only be here for the irst half with new exhibitors illing the chalets for the second half - so visit the second half too! We have now taken delivery of two new sets of free standing goal posts; 11v11 and 9v9. Both pitches are marked out ready for use following considerable maintenance work and we look forward to teams returning to use these facilities as soon as conditions allow. We are absolutely delighted to report that our grant application to Winchester City Council has been approved; this is for the sum of £100,000 and means we are able to press ahead with plans and planning for the improvements and extension to the Pavilion. This is a massive achievement and we are continuing to investigate further funding avenues. Don’t forget that we would be keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in using the pavilion in the future – so that we can, at this early stage in our development plans, ensure that all the needs of the community are met. The plans for the pavilion are currently displayed on our website and we welcome any comments. Did you know that there is a small bike track situated to the rear of Shedield Rec, which is ideal for young children to hone their cycling and balancing technique! It is not too onerous, although of course care should be taken when using any equipment. Speed Watch and Speed Limit Reminder. The Speed Watch meeting held on 22 October was attended by representa- tives of Speed Watch to explain what is involved. Details of any vehicle exceeding the speed limit are taken, entered on the police database and a letter sent from the police. A further letter is sent for a second offence, a third offence results in a police visit. If HGVs are caught travelling above the speed limit their company is visited and hope- fully this will have some effect. Anyone caught excessively speeding, e.g. 50 mph in a 30-mph zone, results in a visit by the police, irrespective of it being a irst, second or third offence. Since commencing recording, Curdridge reported that trafic has slowed and the amount of people reported has reduced considerably. Data gathered is stored for future use to support requests for signs, crossings, etc. If drivers regularly exceed the limit a permanent speed sign or extra police speeding control can be put in place. Winchester Road, for example, runs through both Waltham Chase and Shedield so it is possible to be caught twice on the one road. Suficient volunteers signed up at the meeting to enable the Parish Council to support Speed Watch and commit to purchasing the equip- ment needed. It was disappointing that only two were from Waltham Chase, although one more person has come forward since the meeting. Volunteer numbers currently stand as 8 from Shedield, 2 from Shirrell Heath and 3 from Waltham Chase. The Police are supportive of Speed Watch and PCSO Steph Slater will organise training for the volun- teers. Hopefully Speed Watch will commence in the New Year. In addition to the Parish Council supporting Speed Watch, which will be carried out for an hour or so each week across the three villages, a Speed Limit Reminder (SLR) sign will be purchased, i.e. lashes the speed/smiley or angry face. This will be displayed at various sites around the Parish for two week periods; twelve locations have been identiied. Formalities for this to happen are being progressed and this will also hopefully commence in the New Year. Shedield Common. Local residents and Hampshire Conservation Volunteers did a grand job last October re-opening the footpath from Winchester Road to Heathlands. Next dates 18 January and 29 February 2020. Finally, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Parish Ofice on 01329 830060 or by email clerk@shedieldparishcouncil.org.uk. Please note that the ofice is open to the public from 1200 – 1400 Monday to Thursday, closed on Fridays.
