It was called “The Island of the Blest.” Here abode King Arthur of Britain who was supposed to have flourished at the time of the Saxon invasion. Avalon was also said to be the abode of Oberon, King of the Fairies, who was endowed with magical powers and who was a monarch, rewarded the truthful and honest, and punished evil doers. The name “Avalon” was given to “7 Mile Beach” by Rev. Charles H. Bond, who was a brother-in-law to the president of the first real estate syndicate. The first baby born on the island was named Avalon Corson, and the syndicate gave her two building lots in the community. In the beginning of Avalon’s history as we knew it, “7 Mile Beach” was surveyed and purchased in 1722 from the British owner for about $380,000. It contained approximately 2,725 acres, was approximately 7 miles in length and varied from 3 to 4 blocks in width. It was bounded on the east by the beach and ocean and on the west by the famous inland waterway that reaches from Maine to Florida. The island was originally called “Leamings’ Island” after John Leaming, the first owner. Hotel Avalon In its early days, legend has it that the bare island was used as a cattle range by three families of the island. The British fleet reportedly stole some cattle to replenish their supplies during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. In the 1880’s, the island was almost all sand dunes (many of them the largest of the Jersey Coast). In 1887, a syndicate known as Avalon Beach Developing Company purchased the island. It seems that it was their intent to make Avalon one of the most fashionable and exclusive resorts on the Jersey Coast. The syndicate reportedly spent one half million dollars in public and private improvements. The syndicate founders dubbed Avalon “The Jewel of the Jersey Coast.” All of the great plans for Avalon by this developing company, after a time, seemed to melt away. 3 History of Avalon In the late 1880’s, the railroad came to Avalon, and with it, The Avalon Hotel was built. The railroad was gradually extended and Avalon at one time had three railroad stations. After the railroad was completed, the summer schedule included 24 trains arriving daily to Avalon. The commuter rate was 40 cents and it took two hours of travel time from Philadelphia. Avalon be- came an ideal businessman’s resort. This could be considered the real beginning of the resort boom in Avalon. Since that time, many great things have happened in Avalon, but it has always kept its charm and atmosphere. It certainly can be classed as one of the real family resorts on the Jer- sey coast. You can still walk through the quiet sand dunes or relax on a quiet beach. You will also find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay forever.
