LARS LARSSON · ARNE SJÖSTRÖM BOG SITES AND WETLAND SETTLEMENT DURING THE MESOLITHIC: RESEARCH FROM A BOG IN CENTRAL SCANIA, SOUTHERN SWEDEN THE BOG COMPLEX AGERÖDS MOSSE AND RÖNNEHOLMS MOSSE The bogs Ageröds Mosse and Rönneholms Mosse together form a north-westerly arm of the Ringsjön Basin of central Scania, southernmost part of Sweden, the bottom of which is approximately 25 m deeper than the surrounding terrain (fig.1). The whole bog complex, which, with its total area of 12 km2, is one of Scania’s largest, actually constitutes a single bog. Sjöström). region of Ringsjön that was later filled by organic sediment, ultimately becoming transformed into a raised bog. The river Rönne å, the main drainage of the Lake Ringsjön system, divides the basin into a smaller northern part, i.e. Ageröds Mosse, and a larger southern part, i.e. Rönneholms Mosse (fig. 2). The lake that included the bogs Ageröds Mosse and Rönneholms Mosse was shallow, which resulted in a successive filling up with organic material that started during the Preboreal chronozone and finished during the Subboreal chronozone (Nilsson 1967). -

Bugarin* President Sidney A. Ribeau is in the middle of deliberations regarding the future of anthropology at Howard University. After announcing on September 23, 2010 that he is considering closing the undergraduate majors1 in anthropology and African studies, among other majors and programs, he set aside a period of discussion and requested responses and suggestions from students and faculty.2 We are just coming out of this period and are waiting for the announcement of his final decision. We expect to hear news in January 2011. 1. Various representatives from the administration at Howard University have reminded us that the recommendation on the table is to close the anthropology major and not the program. -

Prehistoric Lithic Technology} Workshops} and Chipping Stations in the Philippines D. KYLE LATINIS THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS represent an important area for research of problems concerning prehistoric archaeology in Southeast Asia. These insular areas, located east of the biogeographic boundary known as Huxley's line, include a variety of tropical environments. These islands remained detached from the continental portion of Southeast Asia throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene. Archaeolog ical research has documented human occupation and adaptation from at least the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene within these islands. Unfortunately, relatively little intensive prehistoric archaeological research has been undertaken in the Philippines compared to some areas in mainland South east Asia, Oceania, and Australia. Warren Peterson's dissertation (1974) focused on a series of sites in northern Luzon and represents one of the foundation stud ies in the Philippines for modern archaeology. Peterson's work has often been cited and his conclusions used for the development of models concerning prehis tory in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Peterson's research was conducted during a period when behavioral reconstruc tions from site assemblage analyses were prominent in archaeological research. Specifically, Peterson attempted behavioral reconstruction from the analysis of stone tools from the Busibus/Pintu site in northern Luzon, Philippines. A reanal ysis of the entire Busibus/Pintu lithic assemblage has revealed problems with Peterson's initial analysis and interpretation of this site-problems that will be addressed in this paper. Lithic technology, stone tool manufacture, and selection and reduction strategies will also be explored. Finally, new interpretations of the nature of the lithic assemblage and site activities at Busibus/Pintu rock shelter will be provided. -

TRYON Abstract The Aurignacian technocomplex in Eurasia, dated to ~43-28 ka, has no direct archeological taxonomic equivalent in Africa during the same time interval, which may reflect differences in inter-group communication or differences in archeological definitions currently in use. Extinct hominin taxa are present in both Eurasia and Africa during this interval, but the African archeological record has played little role in discussions of the demographic expansion of Homo sapiens, unlike the Aurignacian. Sites in Eurasia and Africa by 42 ka show the earliest examples of personal ornaments that result from extensive modification of raw materials, a greater investment of time that may reflect increased their use in increasingly diverse and complex social networks. -

Lake Turkana Archaeology: The Holocene Lawrence H. Robbins, Michigan State University Abstract. Pioneering research in the Holocene archaeology of Lake Turkana con- tributed significantly to the development of broader issues in the prehistory of Africa, including the aquatic civilization model and the initial spread of domes- ticated livestock in East Africa. These topics are reviewed following retrospective discussion of the nature of pioneering fieldwork carried out in the area in the1960s. The early research at Lake Turkana uncovered the oldest pottery in East Africa as well as large numbers of bone harpoons similar to those found along the Nile Valley and elsewhere in Africa. The Lake Turkana area remains one of the major building blocks in the interpretation of the later prehistory of Africa as a whole, just as it is a key area for understanding the early phases of human evolution. Our way had at first led us up hills of volcanic origin. I can’t imagine landscape more barren, dried out and grim. At 1.22 pm the Bassonarok appeared, an enormous lake of blue water dotted with some islands. The northern shores cannot be seen. At its southern end it must be about 20 kilometers wide. As far as the eye can see are barren and volcanic shores. I give it the name of Lake Rudolf. (Teleki 1965 [1886–95]: 5 March 1888) From yesterday’s campsite we could overlook nearly the whole western and north- ern shores of the lake. The soil here is different again. I observed a lot of conglom- erates and fossils (petrification). -

This hiatus leads us to reject diffusion by migration or acculturation. It favours integrationist models of contact between foragers and farmers and attributes the shift to agriculture to social competition between HGs. -
