INTRODUCTION 1.1 The Northern Regional College was formed in August 2007, following the merger of the former Causeway Institute of Further and Higher Education, the East Antrim Institute of Further and Higher Education and the North East Institute of Further and Higher Education. The college has nine campuses spread over a large geographical area, and across seven local government districts. It has two campuses located in both Ballymena and Newtownabbey, and one in Antrim, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Larne and Magherafelt. The significant distances between the campuses has provided executive and senior management with major challenges in a number of key areas, including staff travelling times, timetabling, the scheduling of team meetings and in the development of a corporate identity for the college. -

Quality Review Visit of Northern Regional College May 2018 Key findings QAA's rounded judgements about Northern Regional College The QAA review team formed the following rounded judgements about the higher education provision at Northern Regional College. • There can be confidence that academic standards are reliable, meet UK requirements, and are reasonably comparable with standards set and achieved in other providers in the UK. • There can be confidence that the quality of the student academic experience meets baseline regulatory requirements. Areas for development The review team identified the following areas for development that have the potential to enhance quality and/or further secure the reliability and/or comparability of academic standards at Northern Regional College. The review team advises Northern Regional College to: • develop a clear reporting mechanism to ensure that all academic appeal information is considered thematically by the Governing Body (Quality Code) • ensure that all student representatives receive formal training (Quality Code). Specified improvements The review team did not identify any specified improvements. 1 About this review The review visit took place from 1 to 3 May 2018 and was conducted by a team of three reviewers, as follows: • Mr Mark Cooper • Ms Diane Rainsbury • Mrs Rebekah Osborne (student reviewer). HSE Health & Safety Executive Availability, quality and standards of training for woodworking operators and supervisors Prepared by the Health and Safety Laboratory for the Health and Safety Executive CONTRACT RESEARCH REPORT 339/2001 HSE Health & Safety Executive Availability, quality and standards of training for woodworking operators and supervisors Colin Chambers, Nicola Worsell, Johanna Beswick, Linda Heritage and Becky Wu Health and Safety Laboratory Broad Lane Sheffield S3 7HQ United Kingdom The hazards associated with woodworking machinery and the means of safeguarding against them are well known and documented by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in a comprehensive series of free information sheets prepared by the Agriculture and Wood Sector - Woodworking Section. Nevertheless, the accident rate in the woodworking industry remains high. It is an industry in which employees have to regularly work with cutting tools or blades that are exposed. There is also a significant potential in the industry for ill-health caused by poor manual handling and exposure to dust. The proper use of guards and safe working practices are therefore essential in reducing the risk of serious accidents and ill health to a tolerable level. Training and good supervision are therefore fundamental to ensuring good health and safety. HSE needs to promote suitable training to the woodworking industry. The purpose of the research documented in this report was to: identify the training available to both operators and supervisors of woodworking machinery in particular; assess the suitability of this training in terms of quality and standards with reference to the nature of the industry; and identify barriers to training that exist in the industry and propose measures, which could be taken to improve the take-up of suitable training.
