It is 4 miles 21 chains (6.9 km) down the line from London Paddington. Crossrail is a 73-mile new railway line under development in the United Kingdom. Crossing London from west to east, at each end of its central core the line will divide into two branches: in the west to Reading and to stations at Heathrow Airport; in the east to Abbey Wood and to Shenfield. This detailed, geo specific and accurate, 3D terrain model, covers an area of in length of 3 kilometres including Acton Main Line station and contains all necessary detailed signage, selectable signalling and points. This Real-time scenario was modelled for use in rail driver training videos. Its primary purpose was for drivers to view and understand newly changed rail lines and areas not yet built, helping them to fully learn the new routes, prior to driving them for real. This Real-time scenario was modelled for use in rail driver training. Its primary purpose was for drivers to view and understand new and remodelled rail lines and upgrades, helping them to fully learn new routes, prior to driving them for real. This project could also be used for signal sighting development and planning reviews. It is 47 miles (75 km) northwest of Euston, about 32 miles (51 km) east of Oxford and 17 miles (27 km) west of Bedford, and is one of the six railway stations serving the Milton Keynes urban area. This detailed, geo specific and accurate, 3D terrain model, covers an area encompassing 20 sq km including, multiple rail lines and yards with Bletchley station centrally positioned. 13 different training routes (Moves) were accurately created in detail, with detailed signage, selectable signalling and points. This Real-time scenario was modelled for use in rail driver training. Its primary purpose was for drivers to view and understand new and remodelled rail lines and upgrades, helping them to fully learn new routes, prior to driving them for real. This detailed, geo specific and accurate, 3D terrain model, covers an area in length of over 25km, including the main Derby station, Chaddesden Depot, Etches Park depot, Sinfin branch line and Peartree station. 45 different training routes (Moves) were accurately created in detail, with detailed signage, selectable signalling and points. This Real-time scenario was modelled for use in rail driver training related to a resignalling project. Its primary purpose was for drivers to view and understand new and remodelled rail lines and upgrades, helping them to fully learn new routes, prior to driving them for real. This project could also be used for signal sighting development and planning reviews. The project was undertaken in conjunction with Track Access Services Ltd and converted to also run on Unity systems with Pennant Simulation for VR demonstration purposes and Bentley systems software. The depot was used by Eurostar as the London depot for their fleet of Class 373 trains between 1994 and 2007 during the period when Eurostar trains ran from London Waterloo. The depot is now known as the Hitachi North Pole Train Maintenance Centre. This detailed, geo specific and accurate, 3D terrain model, was modelled for use in rail driver training within the rail yard area, training for moving between the various areas of the yard and in and out of the workshops safely. This is the foundation of the baseline analysis and demonstrates how Derby functions as a place. The topics covered are as follows: • Historic development • Spatial structure • Land use • Road network • Public transport network • Public open space • Green infrastructure • Topography • Flooding • Development opportunities, and • Character Areas. For each topic, a general overview is provided with an explanation of its relevance to tall buildings. The analysis is presented at two scales, the wider city and the Central Business District, which is the focus of this study. Figure 4.1: Satellite image of Derby 71 4 SPATIAL OVERVIEW 4.2 HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT Figure 4.2 illustrates the spatial growth of Derby from the late 18th Century to present day. The unique character of Derby’s historic environment is the result of momentous shifts in the history of the City, as it evolved from a Roman fort, to a medieval market town, dominated by religious houses and Christian churches, to an industrial centre of international recognition, and during the 20th century to a multi-cultural city of national importance for its part in manufacturing, textile production and engineering. Its industrial base has moved away from the city centre to the south-east and has left a legacy of former industrial pockets of brownfield land close to the city centre. Derby only became a city in 1977, although All Saints Church had become a Cathedral church in 1927.
