  • Thematic Review: American Gay Rights Movement Directions and Obje
Name:_____________________________________ Class Period:______ Thematic Review: American Gay Rights Movement Although the topic of homosexuality continues to ignite passionate debate and is often omitted from history discussions due to the sensitivity of the topic, it is important to consider gays and lesbians when defining and analyzing modern American identity. The purpose of this activity is to review the struggle for respect, dignity, and equal protection under the law that so many have fought for throughout American history. Racial minorities… from slaves fighting for freedom to immigrants battling for opportunity… to modern-day racial and ethnic minorities working to overcome previous and current inequities in the American system. Women… fighting for property rights, education, suffrage, divorce, and birth control. Non- Protestants… from Catholics, Mormons, and Jews battling discrimination to modern day Muslims and others seeking peaceful co-existence in this “land of the free.” Where do gays and lesbians fit in? Once marginalized as criminals and/or mentally ill, they are increasingly being included in the “fabric” we call America. From the Period 8 Content Outline: Stirred by a growing awareness of inequalities in American society and by the African American civil rights movement, activists also addressed issues of identity and social justice, such as gender/sexuality and ethnicity. Activists began to question society’s assumptions about gender and to call for social and economic equality for women and for gays and lesbians. Directions and Objectives: Review the events in the Gay Rights Thematic Review Timeline, analyze changes in American identity, and make connections to other historically significant events occurring along the way.

A bartender in Julius's Bar refuses to serve John Timmins, Dick Leitsch, Craig Rodwell and Randy Wicker, members of the Mattachine Society, an early American gay rights group, who were protesting New York liquor laws that prevented serving gay customers on April 21, 1966. Photo from: Getty Images/Fred W. McDarrah. In 1966, on a spring afternoon in Greenwich Village, three men set out to change the political and social climate of New York City. After having gone from one bar to the next, the men reached a cozy tavern named Julius'. They approached the bartender, proclaimed they were gay and then requested a drink, but were promptly denied service. The trio had accomplished their goal: their "sip-in" had begun. The men belonged to the Mattachine Society, an early organization dedicated to fighting for gay rights. They wanted to show that bars in the city discriminated against gay people. Discrimination against the gay community was a common practice at the time. Still, this discrimination was less obvious than the discriminatory Jim Crow laws in the South that forced racial segregation. Bartenders Refused Service To Gay Couples This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. A person's sexual orientation couldn't be detected as easily as a person's sex or race. With that in mind, the New York State Liquor Authority, a state agency that controls liquor sales, took action.

From Criminal to Citizen: How The Evolution of Public Opinion Won Gay Marriage In The Courtroom Sabrina Singer Senior Thesis Department of History Barnard College, Columbia University Advisor: Robert McCaughey Singer 1 Prologue A warm tropical breeze brushed my face as I stood in the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens waiting for the mayor to begin. The crowd murmured with excitement, looking around at each other with anticipation as the sun set behind the palm trees. I glanced over at the couple I had met earlier in the evening. They were dressed in matching tuxedos, holding hands, waiting. The drag queen next to me shifted her weight back and forth, impatient. Then, finally, the speeches were over and the ceremonies could begin. The judge had only lifted the stay on gay marriage in the early hours of the morning, yet hundreds of gay couples lined-up to walk down the makeshift aisle to the hastily constructed altar to be married by the mayor. Dressed in suits, biking clothes, jean shorts, and bathing suits, couple after couple affirmed their love and commitment. Same-sex marriage had come to Florida. I had witnessed similar jubilation in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building two summers prior when the Court issued its momentous ruling in United States vs. Windsor, overturning the Defense of Marriage Act that had prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage. Beholding the relief and joy on the faces of the people swarming the steps of the Supreme Court building, I knew that I had chosen the right issue to believe in.

A proud veteran, former law enforcement official and dedicated public servant, Larry faithfully served the needs and concerns of fellow citizens throughout his life. As the City liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities, he played an invaluable role in fostering cooperation, tolerance and understanding. As a pioneering State Representative, Larry was a strong and effective voice for his constituents and inspired us all with his selfless dedication to helping those in need. I send my condolences to the family and friends of Larry and hope you find comfort in his memory and the love he shared with you. His enthusiastic leadership and vision will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the communities and causes to which he dedicated himself so faithfully. Sincerely, Richard M. Daley Mayor General Assembly State of Illinois To the Family and Friends of Larry McKeon, As the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, I was honored to have served with State Representative Larry McKeon and to call him my friend. While it is true that Larry will be recorded in the annals of Illinois history as the first openly gay, HIV-positive lawmaker to serve in the General Assembly—a remarkable and important distinction, and the fact that may be most remembered—we should take care to never forget that he was also an exemplary human being and public servant.

FY2016 Annual Report Sharing our story through art, culture and education 329 W. 18th Street, Suite 506 Chicago, IL 60616 (312) 421-8040 www.changingworlds.org A Letter from Our Founder and Board President As we reflect on Changing Worlds's accomplishments in 2016, we take note of our beginnings 20 years ago as a photography and oral history project in one Chicago Public School. We marvel at the organization's growth and its exciting developments in programming over these years, and we affirm its mission with new urgency. In 2016, we had 57 in-school and after-school residencies in 27 schools and community partnership sites, serving more than 10,200 students. This would not have been possible without the generosity and support of more than 400 donors and sponsors. As you will read in this report, our arts instruction included an array of visual arts mediums, cultural dances, drama, poetry and video production. Changing Worlds draws on the power of the arts and personal stories to build bridges and to engage young people in explorations of identity, culture, family, community and history. This year we saw a growing interest in issues of social justice and peace. Students engaged in passionate discussions and expressed strong feelings in their writing and art-making. As the year unfolded, the urgency of our mission became painfully clear. The violence in the neighborhoods of many of our students, ongoing racial tension, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric, and the divisiveness of our national election were grave reminders of the importance of our work.
