In the year 2008, Olympic volunteers, as ambassadors of Beijing, will meet new friends from throughout the world. The Chinese people are eager for our guests to learn about our city and the people who live here. I. Brief Information of Beijing Beijing, abbreviated“ JING”, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and the center of the nation's political, cultural and international exchanges. It is a famous city with a long history and splendid culture. Some 500,000 years ago, Peking Man, one of our forefathers, lived in the Zhoukoudian area of Beijing. The earliest name of Beijing 174 Manual for Beijing Olympic Volunteers found in historical records is“JI”. In the eleventh century the state of JI was subordinate to the XI ZHOU Dynasty. Dazhao[si]) and the Chinese Buddhist Guanyinsi. In it, I present a global view of the Buddhist revival of the Mongol monasteries of Hohhot since the 1980s, with a focus on the material culture—architecture, cult objects, and “decoration”—of the sites. -

Early Tantric Hemerology in Chinese Buddhism Timing of Rituals According to Śubhakarasiṃha and Yixing Jeffrey Kotyk LEIDEN UNIVERSITY Abstract This study examines the hemerology explained by Śub- hakarasiṃha/Shanwuwei 善無畏 (637–735) and Yixing 一 行 (673/683–727) in their commentary on the Mahāvai- rocana-sūtra. It is argued that this section reflects the as- trological interests of the early Tantric Buddhist tradition. It is furthermore pointed out that Yixing’s own astronom- ical ideas are incorporated into the explanation. The commentary’s limited details, however, would not have enabled a Chinese reader to determine auspicious times on their own without consulting a specialist in Indian as- trology, a point which indicates that the commentary was produced for a court audience. 2 Kotyk, Early Tantric Hemerology Introduction This study explores the first introduction of what I call “Tantric hem- erology”1 into China during the 720s through the efforts of the Indian master Śubhakarasiṃha 善無畏 (637–735) and his disciple, the astrono- mer-monk Yixing 一行 (673/683–727),2 whose instructions are preserved 1 There is no consensus at present with respect to the terms Mantrayāna, Esoteric Bud- dhism and Tantric Buddhism as they relate to East Asia. -

The location of Sikkim is strategically important to connect Tibet. presently Tibet Autonomous Region (That is TAR) of China on the North and Bengal on the South and \lathula and Jalepla mountain passes to south Tibet (Lhoka). According to the tradition popular in Sikkim, Padmasambhava is said to have stepped in Sikkim. That makes the land purified. Lin1 (Vanderbilt University) Faced with something immensely large or unknown, of which we still do not know enough or of which we shall never know, the author proposes a list as a specimen, example, or indication, leaving the reader to imagine the rest. —Umberto Eco, The Infinity of Lists2 ncarnation lineages naming the past lives of eminent lamas have circulated since the twelfth century, that is, roughly I around the same time that the practice of identifying reincarnating Tibetan lamas, or tulkus (sprul sku), began.3 From the twelfth through eighteenth centuries it appears that incarnation or rebirth lineages (sku phreng, ’khrungs rabs, etc.) of eminent lamas rarely exceeded twenty members as presented in such sources as their auto/biographies, supplication prayers, and portraits; Dölpopa Sherab Gyeltsen (Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan, 1292–1361), one such exception, had thirty-two.
