This month we would like to introduce you to The local news of Hornby-with-Farleton Craig who, in spite of the weather, did an amazing job supplying excellent takeaways to all who came. Delivered in Hornby, Farleton, Claughton & No. 578 Hopefully the weather will be kinder, and we can all enjoy his excellent food served in the HVT car park by the bridge. December 2020/January 2021

Hi, my name is Craig Stephenson and I’m the owner of a fish and chip shop/burger van.

I’ve worked as a chef for 10 years working in various restaurants from little pubs to rosette restaurants. I’ll be bringing the skills that I have learned over the years to give you that crispiest fish and the juiciest burgers you can get from a burger. I also sell teas and coffees under the various drinks.

Hornby Institute has very kindly allowed me to pitch up my burger van on there car park, I’ll be there from 6 pm until 9.30pm in the evening Monday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday I will be there from 4:30pm till 8:30pm. The opening hours and menus well hopefully in- crease over time.

At moment the name of the burger van is “Hank Marvin” but I do in- tend on changing its name to “GoodBurger”, and changing the colour.

Anyway, I hope to see you all there soon! 3 4 CORONAVIRUS HELP AVAILABLE Regular Group Meetings – HORNBY INSTITUTE

THE OLD VICARAGE RETIREMENT HOME

We look forward to congratulating Melita Astridge as she celebrates her 100th birthday on 6th December!

Well!! Didn’t the calendars sell fast!! We ordered 150 with our fingers crossed that we would sell most of them. Then – we had to order more; and then, more! So, thank you to everyone who sold them for us including all the village shops. Also, to the people who bought them, we hope you are as pleased with them as we are. I think there are a few still available in Wenning Stores but if anyone struggles to find one, we will order a few more. It’s quite exciting to think our village will be seen in many parts of the world.

And what are we doing with the money raised? Well when we come home from Barbados………. joking! After much thought we have de- cided to renovate the car park. New white lines; a new sign for visitors; get rid of the weeds etc. This will ensure that it generates Melita (which she will tell you means Malta), speaks a few money for the Institute for many years to come without any more work being needed. Plus, it will enhance the riverside and our village. So words of different languages and will regularly address you once again, many thanks to all involved with our project. in French!

NEW YEAR OPTIMISM! Melita used to work for the police in a department dealing

We are looking forward to being able to open the Institute again in the with aliens which we would now call the Immigration new year and would like ideas for new and exciting events. Department. In later years she loved walking, conquering Pen y ghent shortly before coming to the home. One such idea is to have a Craft Club where ladies - and gents - can meet and do simple projects; have tea/biscuits and a general chat. Melita loves chocolate, and I’m sure will enjoy a piece or two

Would anybody be willing to run this? Plus, if you have and ideas for on her birthday and perhaps a sherry! other new groups please ring Chris on 22259. Many happy returns Melita from us all! All ideas will be considered so let your minds run free! 19 20 TALES FROM A PARISHIONER ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all over the house….

….was just chaos! Little children running everywhere getting more excited by the minute! “Where are Grandad’s big socks & it’s my turn to pour Santa’s whisky”! Yes, a normal Christmas Eve with children. 2 little boys were sleeping ‘under’ the tree in sleeping bags to wait for Santa. One year Himself forgot and washed the glass! Well, outrage that it had been ‘stolen’! So, the next year on Christmas morning there was one clean & one used glass – and an ‘apology’ from Santa who had taken it by mistake. I loved it when a granddaughter spent the day in her fairy costume complete with roller skates – on our new carpet! When Milly was a kitten, we couldn’t find her anywhere but there she was, up the undecorated tree having a great time. Even now as a mature cat she likes to play with the dangly decorations and eat the lametta – so my crystal ones are at the top away from paws and little fingers. Christmas Lunch causes much laughter too, usually about my cooking. One year I removed an enormous turkey from the oven and unwrapped the foil only for my heart to fall! No meat! What would my daughter’s m-in-l say when told they had tinned ham for lunch!! After a mini panic I realised I had done as Mary Berry or someone had said and cooked it upside down. It took 3 of us to turn it over!! Never again did I do that.

Thankfully I have finished the wrapping of presents now. Somehow when I went to the Christmas box it had filled with gifts. So armed with my book, paper, Sellotape and tags I set to. For a change most things were regular shapes so I raced through the task. Boxes had names on and each family their own patterned paper – anything to make it easier with a large family. Little fingers used to help with the sticky tape while the other wrote the tags – though sometimes the writing led to confusion and mixed parcels – but ‘the book’ sorted that out. I’ve had some lovely gifts in the past – a figure with the words ‘thank you’ in her hands from a quiet daughter; a small Christmas Cactus wrapped and under the tree from a young son – and yes, it survived; ‘gold’ earrings that I wore all day - with sore ears till New Year - I still have one in my jewellery box. Treasured memories.

So, what will next year bring? Hopefully it will be better than this one with its many changes and uncertainty. It has shown us what matters in life and how much we actually have that is valuable. Family and friends being two of the most important. We live in a beautiful area, another thing to be thankful for. So, I wish you a Merry Christmas – and remember, gather up the golden drops of happiness wherever you find them. 21 22

14 Dec, 1962 - Mr Woolard of Education Office, called re: removal to new premises in January. 29 30 THE POETRY OF LOCKDOWN

I won’t arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, I’ll sanitize the doorknob and make a cup of tea. I won’t go down to the sea again; I won’t go out at all, I’ll wander lonely as a cloud from kitchen to the hall. There’s a green-eyed yellow monster to the north of Katmandu But I shan’t be seeing him just yet and nor, I think, will you. While the dawn comes up like thunder on the road to Mandalay I’ll make my bit of supper and eat it off a tray. I shall not speed my bonnie boat across the sea to Skye Or take the rolling English road from Birmingham to Rye. About the woodland, just right now, I am not free to go To see the Keep Out posters or the cherry hung with snow, And no, I won’t be travelling much, within the realms of gold, Or get me to Milford Haven. All that’s been put on hold. Give me your hands, I shan’t request, albeit we are friends Nor come within a mile of you, until this trial ends.
