First Day of School

On September 6, 2016, our school, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic, was filled with joy, welcoming 82 students to grades Pre-K thru Gr. 8. Gathered at the backdoor of the school, the faculty, students, and parents were welcomed by Principal Sr. Eliane Ilnitski, SSMI, and our Pastor, Fr. Andriy Dudkevych. After greeting everyone after the long summer, Sr. Eliane welcomed the new students and families to the school, and then led all the children and their watching parents in prayer. Following the prayers all recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sung the American and Ukrainian National anthems. Following prayers, the students with their backpacks, as well as the teachers and parents, made a circle in the school parking lot and were sprinkled with holy water as they received a special blessing and a holy card of Christ the Teacher from Father Andriy. After entering the school and saying hello to their new classrooms, the students, faculty, and some parents participated in Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Andriy Dudkevych. September 11th Prayer Service

Students, teachers and parents prayed for Peace in the world, especially in our motherland Ukraine and in Syria. OCTOBER 23, 2016 11 St. Nicholas Parish, Passaic, NJ, Celebrates 32nd Annual Ukrainian Festival The 32nd Annual St. Nicholas Parish Ukrainian Heritage Festival was held on Sunday, September 20th. This year, thanks be to the grace of God, there was a record breaking attendance of 1,500 guests who celebrated our Ukrainian and American heritage, our culture, and our faith. The day began with a Divine Liturgy. And then the outdoor festivities began!

As in past years, there were tasty homemade Ukrainian food offerings as well as traditional American fare. Many vendors displayed their many lovely souvenirs and unique handmade gifts.

Among the many vendors were the young ladies of our St. Nicholas Junior Sodality. When not on stage performing, they diligently manned their table, selling delicious organic jams homemade treasures and gifts.

Entertainment was bountiful –performances by popular Ukrainian vocalists and colorful traditional Ukrainian dancers of all ages, and live dance music under the starry night topped off the evening.

Volunteers of all ages, worked tirelessly throughout the entire day and evening. Not a guest went hungry or thirsty that day! Indeed, St. Nicholas Parish has much to be thankful for. It is the strength of our faith that has sustained us through challenging times in our homeland, here and overseas.

As a new century in the parish history begins, we strive to build upon a strong foundation of faith, and to grow in our spiritual lives through prayer and activities that unite us as a parish family, and this festival serves such a purpose. What was evident in looking out over the many participants that day was that no matter the age, the origin, or the language abilities, everyone worked together towards a common goal.

Fr. Andriy and the St. Nicholas Parish Festival Committee would like to thank the sponsors, benefactors, and everyone who volunteered their time, talents, and treasures to this special event. Were it not for their continued support it would not be possible for the parish and our school to thrive and grow.

Luke was not only an evangelist, but also an excellent journalist.

In his account of how Jesus restored life to Jairus’ daughter, Luke included the reaction of the crowd, laughing at Jesus before he performed this miracle: “. . . they ridiculed him.” Despite the crowd’s derision, Jesus brought the twelve-year-old girl back from the dead. Then, instead of going before the now-silenced crowd to take credit and “build his brand,” he instructed the girl’s parents not to tell anyone how he had performed the miracle.

His was an act of pure mercy.

When things go bad for us or the world we live in, we sometimes blame God, questioning whether he cares about human suffering. But Christ’s selfless raising of Jairus’ little girl demonstrates that the Lord does care—a great deal more than we can know.

His willing compassion to restore life doesn’t depend on whether a person has just died or has been dead for days. In the same way, Jesus can restore our spiritual life no matter how long we have spent ourselves in sin or how badly we have sinned.

Because his mercy knows no bounds—and endures forever.

Our prayer today: Merciful Jesus, let us always be mindful of your compassionate love for us, no matter what.

OCTOBER 23, 2016 16 New York to Commemorate 83rd Anniversary of the Holodomor

New York, NY (UCCA) -- On Saturday, November 12th, Ukrainians, friends and mourners will convene at midtown Manhattan’s historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the annual National Observance Commemorating Ukraine’s Holodomor, the Famine Genocide of 7-10 million Ukrainians in 1932-33.

Co-organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the largest representation of Ukrainians in America, this annual commemoration regularly attracts hundreds of attendees from across the tri-state metropolitan area. The ecumenical requiem service (panakhyda), which will begin at 1PM EST, will be concelebrated by the hierarchies of the Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Greek-Catholic churches in America, with the participation of the Dumka Ukrainian Chorus of New York. Following the service, guests and dignitaries will deliver a series of brief remarks.

This year, the Ukrainian American community will be commemorating the 83rd anniversary of one of the worst cases of man's inhumanity towards man, when millions of innocent victims were deliberately starved to death through the Soviet Union’s forced collectivization efforts, designed to crush the spirit of nationally conscious Ukrainians.

The UCCA strongly encourages the Ukrainian American community to actively participate in this now annual commemoration in remembering and honoring the millions of innocent victims of Ukraine’s Genocide.

For more information, please contact the UCCA National Office either by email at [email protected] or by phone at (212) 228-6840.

11 October 2016

On October 6-9, Monaco hosted the Plenary Assembly of the Council of Episcopal Conferences of Europe. On Saturday, October 8, the regular working meeting of the heads of Catholic Dioceses across Europe heard reports on pastoral challenges the Church faces in their communities.

In his speech, His Beatitude Sviatoslav told his brothers-bishops about the third year of suffering afflicted to the Ukrainians by war. The patriarch stressed that despite diplomatic efforts and other activities of the international community, no lasting cease-fire has been achieved in Ukraine.

“Apart from the annexed Crimea, seven percent of the Ukrainian territory was occupied in Donbas. Today our country has more than two million internally displaced persons. Millions of people have been directly affected by the fighting, with hundreds of dead and missing, thousands of injured, are in need of long-term treatment. Hundreds of people remain in captivity in the occupied territories and now the international community and the churches and religious organizations are trying to facilitate their release,” the Patriarch of the UGCC said.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav described in detail the signs of humanitarian and economic crisis, which Ukraine is experiencing as a result of military aggression. He said that a quarter of Ukraine's economy was destroyed. Due to the economic power of the war against Ukraine, depreciation of the national currency, prices for staples have increased by almost half and continue to grow rapidly on. “According to official UN data, 78 percent of Ukraine's population lives below the poverty line. All this causes a powerful new wave of emigration to Europe, in particular, the young people go looking for opportunities to help their families survive in these extreme conditions,” said the spokesman.

The patriarch spoke about the pastoral ministry of the Church in today's circumstances, including the proclamation of the Gospel and social service to the needy. His Beatitude Sviatoslav warmly thanked the Episcopal Conferences of Europe and all the brothers and sisters in Christ for the generous response to the call of Pope Francis to all the Catholic communities of the continent on April 24 this year to raise funds for the needs of victims of war in Ukraine. The Head of the UGCC reported on the priorities set by the Apostolic capital and the way of holding the humanitarian action launched by the Holy Father entitled “Pope for Ukraine.” He thanked the Holy Father that Successor of the Apostle Peter broke by his appeal the European silence and indifference on this international crisis and once again drew attention to Ukraine’s pain.

The Primate of the Church said that the international solidarity and revealing the truth about the war in our country is very important for the suffering people of Ukraine.

“The first victim of this war is truth. A broad campaign of disinformation and ignoring the truth about the war in Europe harms not only the victim but also all those who by silence or in action encourages the aggressor,” the patriarch said.
