The records in this collection document many of the professional activities he engaged in while serving as chancellor, his speeches and involvement with community organizations, and records from his world travels. Also included are realia like a T-shirt, insignia patch, audiovisual recordings, yearbooks, photograph and memento books, and the first UCI Medal and pin awarded by the Chancellor in 1984. Processing Note In order to expedite access to the collection, it was minimally processed. See series-level notes for more information. Biography Daniel G. Aldrich , who became the founding chancellor of the University of California, Irvine, was born in Northwood, New Hampshire July 12, 1918. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Agriculture at the University of Rhode Island in 1939. He earned his Master's of Science degree at the University of Arizona in 1941 and married the former Jean Hamilton. He went on to get his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1943. He then joined the University of California as a junior chemist in the Citrus Experiment Station at Riverside and progressed through the ranks to Professor of Soils and as a Chemist in the Agricultural Experiment Station, and Chairman of Soils and Plant Nutrition on the Davis and Berkeley campuses. (Three years of this period were spent in the Armed Services in World War II.) In 1958 he became Dean of Agriculture for the University of California, and presided over agricultural teaching programs at Davis, Berkeley, Riverside and Los Angeles, as well as over the Statewide Agricultural Experiment Station. He was responsible for activities on four campuses and a network of field stations and over the Agricultural Extension Service with farm advisors and home advisors serving 56 of California's 58 counties. In 1962 Dr. Aldrich was appointed Chancellor of the Irvine campus, with responsibilities for developing this campus from bare ground to a fully operating institution. He continued as Chancellor until his retirement in 1984. However, with the sudden death of the UC Riverside chancellor, he became Acting Chancellor of that institution from 1984-85. He was called again from 1986-87 to become Acting Chancellor of UC Santa Barbara. He "retired," finally, and became Chancellor Emeritus of the University of California, Irvine. AS.003 2 Dr. Aldrich was involved in numerous civic and professional activities. He was also an active participant in a variety of sports, ranging from coaching Little League teams in Riverside, Davis and Berkeley, to participating (and winning medals) in US Master Track and Field Championships, Senior Olympics, a World Association of Veteran Athletes Championships. Appraisal Note During processing the collection was reduced from 38.6 linear feet to 31 linear feet by discarding duplicate materials, financial records, and publications not authored by Daniel G.
