  • Are Tits Really Unsuitable Hosts for the Common Cuckoo?
Ornis Fennica 91:0000. 2014 Are tits really unsuitable hosts for the Common Cuckoo? Tomá Grim*, Peter Sama, Petr Procházka & Jarkko Rutila T. Grim & P. Rutila, Kannelkatu 5 as 26, 53100 Lappeenranta, Finland Received 19 January 2014, accepted 18 March 2014 Avian brood parasites exploit hosts that have accessible nests and a soft insect diet. Com- mon Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) hosts were traditionally classified as suitable if both pa- rameters were fulfilled or unsuitable if one, or both, were not. In line with this view, hole- nesting tits (Paridae) have become a text-book example of unsuitable Cuckoo hosts. Our extensive literature search for Cuckoo eggs hatched and chicks raised by hosts revealed 16 Cuckoo nestlings in Great Tit (Parus major) nests, 2 nestlings and 2 fledglings in Blue Tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), and 1 nestling in a Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus)nest. Our own data from natural observations and cross-fostering experiments concur with lit- erature data that Great Tits are able to rear Cuckoo chicks to fledging. The natural obser- vations involve the first known cases where a bird species became parasitized as a by- product of nest usurpation (take-over). Surprisingly, Cuckoo chicks raised by Great Tits grew better than Cuckoo chicks raised by common hosts, even alongside host own chicks.

  • Effective Foreign Language Teaching: a Matter of Iranian Students’ and Teachers’ Beliefs
www.ccsenet.org/elt English Language Teaching Vol. 4, No. 2; June 2011 Effective Foreign Language Teaching: a Matter of Iranian Students’ and Teachers’ Beliefs Mahyar Ganjabi Payamenoor University Tel: 98-9127-049-132 E-mail: [email protected] Received: December 31, 2010 Accepted: January 28, 2011 doi:10.5539/elt.v4n2p46 Abstract This paper reports on a study that investigated the beliefs about language learning of 120 Iranian EFL students and 16 EFL teachers. The primary aim of the study was to reveal whether there was any difference between the beliefs of Iranian students and teachers regarding different aspects of language learning such as grammar teaching, error correction, culture, target language use, computer-based technology, communicative language teaching strategies and assessment. Data were collected using a 24-item questionnaire. It was concluded that there were some differences between the Iranian students’ and teachers’ beliefs regarding what procedures were most effective in bringing about language learning. Discussion of the findings and implications for further research are also articulated. Keywords: Effective language teaching, Teachers’ beliefs, Students’ beliefs 1. Introduction Language practitioners and researchers have already recognized that teachers and their agendas do not have a complete control over what learners learn from English language courses (Allwright, 1984 as cited in Breen, 2001a; Salimani, 2001). The recent emphasis on the holistic approaches to language learning have brought into our focus the fact that learners are not just cognitive beings, that is, they do not approach the task of language learning merely from the cognitive window (Breen, 2001b). But learners are multidimensional beings; they are a combination of a bulk of different variables which help them to learn whatever they are learning in the best possible way.

  • Member Services 2018
AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Member Services 2018 JANUARY – DECEMBER 2018 GUIDELINES FOR PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT The Constitution of the American Physical Society states that the objective of the Society shall be the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It is the purpose of this statement to advance that objective by presenting ethical guidelines for Society members. Each physicist is a citizen of the community of science. Each shares responsibility for the welfare of this community. Science is best advanced when there is mutual trust, based upon honest behavior, throughout the community. Acts of deception, or any other acts that deliberately compromise the advancement of science, are unacceptable. Honesty must be regarded as the cornerstone of ethics in science. Professional integrity in the formulation, conduct, and report- ing of physics activities reflects not only on the reputations of individual physicists and their organizations, but also on the image and credibility of the physics profession as perceived by scientific colleagues, government and the public. It is important that the tradition of ethical behavior be carefully maintained and transmitted with enthusiasm to future generations. The following are the minimal standards of ethical behavior relating to several critical aspects of the physics profession. Physicists have an individual and a collective responsibility to ensure that there is no compromise with these guidelines. RESEARCH RESULTS The results of research should be recorded and maintained in a form that allows analysis and review. Research data should be immediately available to scientific collaborators. Following publication, the data should be retained for a reasonable period in order to be available promptly and completely to responsible scientists.

  • Sociology and Social Anthropology Fall Term 2020 Social Movements
Sociology and Social Anthropology Fall Term 2020 Social Movements SOCL 5373 (2 credits) Instructor: Jean-Louis Fabiani [email protected] Social Movements have been From the start a central object of the social sciences: how do people behave collectively? How do they coordinate? What are the costs of a mobilization? What are the tools used (gatherings, voice, violence and so on) Who gets involved, and who does not? What triggers a movement, what makes it Fail? How are movements remembered and replicated in other settings? The First attempts to understand collective behavior developed in the area of crowd psychology, at the beginning of the 20th century: explaining the protesting behavior oF the dominated classes was the goal oF a rather conservative discourse that aimed to avoid disruptive attitudes. Gustave Lebon's rather pseudo-scientiFic attempts were a case in point: collective action was identiFied as a Form of panic or of madness. Later on, more sympathetic approaches appeared, since social movements were considered as an excellent illustration of a democratic state. Recently, globalization has brought about new objects oF contention but also the internationalization oF protests. Mobilizations in the post-socialist countries and the "Arab Springs" are characterized by new Forms of claims and new Forms of action. For many social scientists, their study demands a new theoretical and methodological equipment. The Field of social movements has been an innovative place For new concepts and new methods: "resource mobilization theory", "repertoire of action" and "eventful sociology" are good examples. Right now, this area oF study hosts the most intense, and perhaps the most exciting debates in the social sciences.

Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 2, No. 5; November 2015 Tomorrow’s World Language Teachers: Practices, Processes, Caveats and Challenges along the Yellow Brick Road Dr. Paul A. García University of Kansas (retired) 5211 Everwood Run, Sarasota, FL 34235 U.S.A. Dr. Patricia Davis-Wiley Professor, WL and ESL ED The University of Tennessee BEC 217, Knoxville, TN 37996-3442 U.S.A. Abstract In this manuscript, the authors discuss multiple issues confronting world language teacher development (WLTD) and suggest options to ensure academic success for all world language (WL) learners. Critics’ claims that WLTD programs lack professionalization can be addressed to “get it right” for tomorrow’s pre-service students—and for their pre-K-12 learners by the establishment of a National Commission on WLTD. Four questions inform our argument that improved professionalization, together with clinical induction and teacher efficacy, will contribute to learners’ success: 1. How might WLTD build upon—and not repeat—past practices? 2. How will standardization initiatives continue to change WLTD? 3. How might investigators align research that contributes to student achievement at the pre-collegiate level? 4. How does the implementation of such endeavors influence our praxis? Keywords: post-secondary, teacher preparation and licensure, teacher characteristics 1. Prolog (nicht) im Himmel [Prologue (not) in Heaven] Pre-service teacher induction persists as a critical concern of American education. It is a generations-old societal preoccupation with teachers’ skills and preparedness, one that reformers, politicians, study groups, and teachers themselves have pilloried, studied, and reported since at least the 1850s (Goldstein, 2014). World language teacher development (WLTD) is not exempt from this history.
