Borderline Folk Music Club Picnic; Sunday, August 25th; Rockland County; noon-6pm On Sunday, August 25th we will again be co-sponsoring the Borderline Folk Music Club's annual Picnic which will take place at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps., 200 Congers Road, New City (Rockland County), NY 10956. The program starts promptly at 12:00 noon and ends at 6:00 PM. This year the theme of the Picnic will be "Folk Music Of The '60s" and will feature 2 interesting workshops. One panel will be composed of older musicians who were actually there at the time and were part of the scene. The other panel will be made up of younger musicians who were not there at the time but whose music was influenced by the artists of the'60s. There will be 20 musicians performing on the mainstage and they will be required to do one song from the '60s as part of their set. In addition there will be a separate area for singing and jamming that all can participate in. Bring whatever food you want for yourself; the Borderline will be selling soft drinks, water, soda, & juices at a nominal fee, Note that alcoholic beverages are not permitted. The Picnic is FREE but we ask that you make reservations by e-mail to solz1(at)optonline.net or by calling Sol Zeller at 845- 354-4586 so that we know how many to prepare for. Those coming by car can get off the Palisades Parkway at Exit 11 and make a right on to New Hempstead Road. Take it all the way until it ends at Main St. in New City. Make a right and the immediate next left and you will be on Congers Road. Follow it for one mile and the Ambulance Corps will be on your left. There is plenty of free parking on site as well as at the high school parking lot across the street. Those coming by public transportation should take the Coach USA Red & Tan Lines (Rockland Transit) bus Route 9A from Port Authority to New City. This is a double issue— July and August, so you might want to hold onto it until the September issue comes out. This issue also has the festival listings. The Irish Traditional Music Sessions will continue during the summer as will the Folk Open Sings and the Shanty Sings. We will also have a sing at the Ring Garden in Inwood, Manhattan, and the Borderline Folk Music Club Picnic in Rockland County. In August, we have a special treat with the concert by Young Ireland. It may seem to be a little early to think about it, but plan for our Fall Weekend the first weekend in November. This will be our traditional fall weekend. We are making plans for the Eisteddfod to continue at a later date and will let you know more about that, but you know how much we love getting together to sing for a whole weekend. Look for the information about our fall weekend on page 5 and reserve now. There is also a special offer for the weekend on page 7, if you were not able to attend other weekends. Check it out for details. Thank you to the volunteers, Don Wade, Marilyn Suffet, Isabel Goldstein, and Eileen Pentel who mailed out the last newsletter. August 29th we will be having another mailing. Such a fun time—come on over and help out! (see page 3)

by Ruth Lipman Judy Polish has provided the following update on her granddaughters: “Some of you may remember Rachel and Leslie Polish who came with her on several weekends. They liked the camper concerts and hanging around with Laura and Willie. Rachel just graduated from Framingham State College with a B.S. in Food and Nutrition. Leslie is going into her senior year at James Madison University in Virginia, and is majoring in Arts Education. The youngest, April, is in the 7th grade, and plays the flute in the school band. Judy hasn't been able to persuade her to come to a Pinewoods weekend but is still trying." Judy, who had a successful brain operation in March, says that she is very grateful to American medicine. Judy we are all thankful that you are well! Toby Fagenson and Jane Babits are planning a trip to London and Paris (for September) in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary and Jane’s birthday too. Félicitations et bon voyage monsieur Toby et madame Jane. Correction to last month's column: The club that Toby and Jane went to in Boston is the Club Passim, not Club Passin. If you have news to share, please contact me at 372 Central Park West, #15B, New York, NY 10025; 212-663-6309; ruthlipman (at) msn.com. Eisteddfod Takes a Break, but the Music Goes On At the January meeting, the FMSNY Executive Board voted to suspend our annual Eisteddfod festival for 2013 and reintroduce the Fall Weekend, which was one of the club’s yearly highlights before being combined with Eisteddfod in 2009. The Fall Weekend will, as always, feature the kind of program and performers that have long demonstrated the value of Pinewoods membership. Meanwhile, the Board’s Eisteddfod Committee will be working diligently to reimag- ine the festival so that when we bring it back in 2014 it will be attractive to a wider audience. Those who have attended Eisteddfod know what a great contribution it has made to the folk music community in terms of education, entertainment and fellowship. Our goal is to find a way to spread that message and draw an audience large enough to make the festival self-sustaining into the indefinite future. Weekend Scholarships Available Applications are now being accepted to the Fall weekend for the George Parker Schol- arship, the Mayer Scholarship and the Lil & Lou Appel Scholarship. These funds provide either full or partial scholarships to individuals who could not otherwise attend and who have a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. TO APPLY: Please download an application from the website www.folkmusicny.org or request an application form from the address below. The most important consider- ations are financial need and interest in folk music. The candidates will be considered and notified by mail. Please send it in, via mail or e-mail, before October 1st to: Marilyn Suffet, Phone: 718-786-1533; E-mail: [email protected] 41-05 47th Street, Sunnyside, NY 11104. In an effort to make our weekends available to more members there are now several scholarship funds set up : George Parker Scholarship - provides one full scholarship per fall or spring weekend to a club member otherwise unable to attend. The fund was established in memoriam by George’s parents, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and other contributors. George was a young man and a friend of folk music who greatly enjoyed our weekends. Charles & Ilse Mayer Scholarship Fund - provides one full scholarship for each of the fall, winter, and spring weekends each year. This fund was set up in memoriam by board member Evy and Ilse Mayer in honor of Evy’s father Charles Mayer. The Lil & Lou Appel Scholarship is an independent fund which provides scholarship support for the spring and fall weekends to an individual who has a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. This fund was established by a loving group of regulars in memoriam to Lil’s 35+ years of bi-weekly Friday night sings, “a breeding and feeding ground for many of today’s accomplished singers and musicians.” For information, or to contribute, contact Alice Backer at 914-366-0037 - 7 - For addresses, times, phone numbers, and other details, see the location information on page 9.
