Accounts of the complicated repatriation of last year’s winterers have made interesting reading. We hope that all turns out well for them after their return. Here in the UK the “lock-down” and subsequent “relief” will strike a chord with members of the BAS Club, especially those who have wintered in Antarctica. Relief after isolation takes different forms, but for me one particular memory lingers, and that is the hope, expectation, and subsequent fulfillment, during relief operations, of eating a fresh orange. Divine - but that was in days less fraught! One side–effect of the current pandemic was the cancellation of the BASC AGM weekend in Dundee, scheduled for June this year. That was a great disappointment after the very considerable amount of work undertaken by the team of organizers, led by Mick Pawley and Donald Thomas. The good news is that, undeterred, the team has booked a new date, 2022. So, thanks, Dundee team, for your continued efforts on the Club’s behalf. I certainly hope to be there, at this very pleasant and historic venue. This June, in the absence of the Club AGM, there will be an EGM, and this will be restricted to Committee members and co-optees. Necessary business decisions will be taken, in order to ensure the safe running of the Club. Members will wish to know that Bev Ager, after undertaking a great deal of work as the Club Web Co-ordinator, has now stood down from this increasingly important post. I would like to thank Bev, on behalf of the Club, for her great efforts, freely given, on our behalf. Andy Smith was co-opted to replace Bev in March 2020 and is already making his presence felt. Welcome, Andy! Alex Gaffikin, after a very significant contribution as Membership Secretary will be standing down at the EGM. Jenny Dean has kindly stepped forward to assist, and will be co-opted on to the Committee. She will be a nominee for the Membership Secretary post at the AGM 2021. Many thanks, Alex for all your work, and please accept our best wishes for the future. Also thanks to Jenny for stepping in at a crucial time. This is my last Chairman’s Chat. I will be standing down in June 2020, but will be available for consultation as necessary. The plan is that the Committee, at the June EGM, will elect a temporary caretaker- Chairperson, and then, at the 2021 AGM meeting, there will be a new Chairperson, properly elected by the Club membership. I would like to thank all Club members for their support over the last 16 to 17 years, to thank those who have offered help and constructive criticism, and also those who have selflessly “put their head above the parapet” in order to help the Club. I would like to thank the President of BAS Club, Barry Heywood, for his friendship, sage advice and continuing interest. I would also like to thank successive Officers of the Club and the Members of the BAS Club Committee, who have all been most supportive in making the Chairman’s job that much easier. I have enjoyed my tenure greatly. Looking towards the future, liaison with BAS should be maintained. I would like to thank Professor Dame Jane Francis for her approachability and for her continuing interest in the BAS Club. With best wishes Terry Allen - 3 - British Antarctic Survey Club EDITORIAL Once more Halley is closed for the winter season or, correctly, unmanned for health and safety issues (I cannot confirm that this is the correct reason) that got me thinking of my time at Halley and whether we respected all latest health and safety issues. So, for the front cover, I thought I would include some on my photos that clearly show we did not. These relate to the Departure from the Perla Dan January 1967 at Halley – in a snowstorm I think the person climbing down the ladder of the Perla Dan is Jim (JimJam) Jamieson. The one ‘trudging’ through the snow, laden down, is Bill Laidlaw. Interesting, the Marguerite Bay reunion crowd have decided to create their own website, organised and created by Steve Wormald, – anyone looking to add contributions use this email [email protected] Jim Frank’s diary – at this stage it is composed of mainly photographs. I have inserted them as I thought them pertinent in remembering ‘Husky’ friends and some of our deceased club members Due to unforeseen circumstances this magazine will be issued late – waiting to see if the ‘lockdown’ becomes easier such that we could get hard copies sent out.–I am sure all members understand the reason for this. - 4 - The British Antarctic Survey Club The 45th Annual General Meeting Agenda ALL MEMBERS NOTE THAT THE AGM AT DUNDEE FOR 2020 HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE THE PRESENT VIRUS SITUATION BUT HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE YEAR 2022. The 2020 Annual General Meeting which was scheduled to be held in Dundee on 20th June has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus situation. Instead there will be an EGM - Extraordinary General Meeting held by the Club Committee. This Revised Business Notice gives the details of the EGM. All members who have paid for the DUNDEE AGM Reunion Dinner should have received a refund Just a general reminder for people who have not received their refund to send their bank details to John Blunn –Club Treasurer, ASAP to get a reunion dinner refund Revised Business Notice of BAS Club 2020 AGM This Revised Notice supersedes the previous 2020 Business Notice issued October 2019. It is intended to advise the BAS Club membership and other interested parties that the 2020 AGM will not be held due to the Global issue of the Covid-19 virus At the March 2020 General Meeting the Committee determined that there would be an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), to effect the necessary interim business of the Club The EGM will be held on Thursday 11th June at 1000hrs and will be conducted using video conferencing. Attendance will be restricted to Committee and proposed Committee members only. The main purpose of the EGM is to ensure continued management of the Club is maintained in line with the Constitution until a full AGM is held. It is anticipated that the next AGM will be held in 2021. Should any member have any relevant questions that they feel should be raised at the EGM they are requested to forward these by email to the Secretary at [email protected] for consideration. The Committee will endeavour to issue this revised business notice to members who do not have access to online services. Agenda EGM 11th June 2020 1. Apologies TW 2. Chairman’s Report.
