The Frogs were wary of the wascally whippets!

The Rochester area had received rain every few days for the weeks before the event, with nasty standing water present for much of the time, including on a few places on the track. For some reason the rain held off for the entire week before the event leading to a much drier situation for the weekend. Because of all the rain there was a bare patch near where the would end at 200 yards so we decided to do a 150-yard weekend, which worked quite well. People had to park a ways out to avoid any wet spots and possibly getting stuck like last year. The weather stayed dry all weekend in spite of some of the weather forecasts. People made their way to Illinois from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Virginia. The irises were blooming adding some color to the yard.

On Saturday, we had 24 adults and one puppy. Debra Borton who lives in the Peoria area, came by and helped us all day with line judging. Her dog had run into a barbed wire fence chasing a squirrel and was on the mend. Measuring took place on the back concrete slab. Steve Shimer came up with Bess and was talking away and didn’t pay much attention to setting her up. She measured out the first time but was fine the second time thru when Steve concentrated on standing her. In spite of it being 150 yards, since people had to park a big farther away, the people got a good work out. After doing up the first program we realized that we had to redo because one dog was in the grade, those first event of the year blues…

In the first program Zorro, Dickens, Bess, Edward, Sawyer and Charlotte won their first races. The fight for the ARX was a tough one. It came down to the last program where Moto, Dickens and XL tied for first in the semi-feature giving Moto the first set of points and Edward and Dickens splitting the second set. Top points and winner of the meet was Charlotte with Gem second in the meet. Rounding out the top five were Moses, Sawyer and Brazen. Ziggy, the lone puppy finished all his races although he was not too enthusiastic about the boxes with their loud noise. Someone saw a snake and thought it might be one of the bad ones, but I don’t think we have any bad ones in this area of Illinois. Once the racing was over conformation was judged by Sandy McMillan, a aficionado and conformation person. She chose Moto, Moses, Fanta and Dickens as her top four Whippets giving Moto a really good day with top set of ARX points and the top conformation spot.

Saturday Conformation – Moto, Moses, Fanta, Dickens We had the wrapped prizes on Saturday where you could trade with whatever was available before yours. The hot item was the pajamas which were stolen several times. Phoebe who was showing dogs in Bloomington got there just in time to get her prize. Onward to turkey, baked beans, salad and assorted desserts and other items. If you got in line last, the baked beans were almost gone. A Board Meeting was held and was finished in an hour, that may be a speed record! Sunday morning meant running out to get some more drinks and ice, it was a thirsty lot on Saturday. Debra came on Sunday and helped out with line judging all day, it was hard to get enough line judges so we really appreciated her help. Ule did boxes both days and got quite a work out. We had 21 dogs on Sunday with one puppy. In the first program Jessie, Karma, Bess, Simone, Sawyer and Charlotte won their races.

The top five for Sunday were in the same order and the same dogs as Saturday so Charlotte and Gem won the NARX points. Moto and Bess won the ARX points. Ziggy the puppy made it thru all his three programs. Sheri Johnson, an English Cocker breeder and conformation participant judged the conformation and placed Pibb, Moses, Jessie, and Sawyer as the top Whippets.

Sunday Conformation – Pibb, Moses, Jessie, Sawyer

A new turkey and leftovers from yesterday were served for luncheon. Fred had accumulated quite a pile of stuff to take with him so he left but realized he had left his prizes behind and we saw him coming back to retrieve them a few minutes later. Thank you, Fred, for taking all the photos!

All in all a successful weekend after all the worries about too much rain. On Monday a tired Connie & Ule went to the agility trial in Bloomington to help and got to sit all day, it was raining there so we were very grateful it had not rained on the weekend.

After the weekend was over some masked whippets sent out ransom demands for some personal items from the event

The items in this picture were seized by the RADICAL WING OF THE WHIPPET COALITION. We are known to be a ruthless bunch of whippets who terrorize rabbits, squirrels and other small animals. We have recently taken to seizing favorite human items and ransoming them to finance our operations. We wear bandanas and dye our hair coats so we won’t be recognized in our ransom photos. We have included a newspaper so you know this is a current picture and your items are still safe.

If you recognize any of the items in these photos, taken away secretly at the Memorial Day race meet, you can get them back by putting 8 steaks, a box of biscuits and a 10 lb bag of chewies in a brown bag. Come ALONE to the location where the meet was held. Drop the bag just over the gate and leave immediately! You will be contacted about where to pick up your item.

Should you fail to meet our demands within 7 days, look at the picture below to see what happened to the last item taken where our ransom demands were not met! NOT A PRETTY SIGHT!

ALAMO AREA WHIPPET CLUB McKinney, Texas, May 30/31, 2009

Since Alamo Area Whippet Club began hosting CWA Racing in 2007, we have travelled out of state to WindyGlen Ranch in Oklahoma to hold our meets. The Papins have been consistently gracious hosts to us, and we appreciate deeply the assistance they have lent our up-start group of racers. As of the ASFA I.I. event, however, Windyglen Ranch has closed its proverbial doors to performance events as Don and Sally turn to other interests and leisure activities. We hate to lose their hospitality and their company, but the decision has given occasion for us to grow, in both our experience and our independence. And I think that’s just what we did on May 30-31, 2009. On these dates, AAWC hosted our meets at a new location in North Texas named Myers Park and Event Center. This public park dedicated to youth and recreation offers an expansive “back forty” area of open acreage with electrical and water hook ups. Trees on the perimeter of the field offer some shade to the heat- weary as well as some privacy from the other goings-on in the park. Overall, this is a very nice place to be and likely our new home for the remainder of 2009. The location, however, was not the only “new” element of our May meets. AAWC purchased used race boxes in late 2008, and club members Dana Moran and Scott Hurlbert turned up the work-dial to refurbish the boxes’ doors and walls and to give a fresh paint job and vinyl make-over in time for our event. They were “schnazzy” and worked without failing all weekend long – not that we ever doubted the engineering of our members. On Saturday, our meet welcomed ten adult starters and one puppy. Our two A-grade racers were returning after spending some time on the disabled list, Leo from a injury and Phisher from a race- box jammed-toe. The programs proceeded smoothly and quickly, the longest delays caused by the long walk to the boxes themselves. FTE Pearl proved strong competition for our B and C racers, and D racers Parker and Christine traded places with each run for the finish line. Reminiscent of his March 2008 performance, Leo went undefeated for the first two programs and looked like a promising meet winner until a toe-injury demanded that he scratch for the day. His absence gave Phisher the opening needed to complete the last two programs undefeated and to secure his first CWA meet win. He added to his ARX points and picked up also 3 NARX points. Leo’s housemate, Brom, was able as well to pick up his first ARX/NARX point with a second place meet finish. Congratulations to all the dogs and their owners that ran excellently despite the unfamiliar track and unforgiving heat. Our Saturday’s conformation competition was judged by local Texas breeder Larry Talley of Lone Star Whippets. We gathered under the shade of the trees and presented seven tired but willing . After some deliberation, a hands-on exam and a view of the group on the move, Larry selected the following winners:

1st Phisher with Dana Moran; 2nd, Souris with Olivia Moran; 3rd Brom with Glenda Konopka; 4th Parker with Sami Hirko It was a particularly special day for Phisher, then, winning both the race meet and the conformation competition, and unknown to spectators, he achieved this just two days after his seventh birthday. Congratulations to all the winners. This was a record day in more than one sense. On Sunday, AAWC enjoyed a few more FTE participants and was pleased to begin the second-day’s meet with 12 adult racers. Leo initially looked to be recovered from the earlier toe issue, running alone in the first program’s high point race without issue. FTE Sealey came on strong in the first two programs and made her way to the high point races with ease. Close on her heels was another FTE hound, Validus, who shadowed her throughout the day, always threatening to get the edge. As the day before, D-dogs Parker and Christine were exciting to see in their closely matched efforts to cross the line first. Parker this day was able to pull out one more win over Christine, and proved that his racing light-bulb had truly begun to burn. Leo, on a disappointing note, came up lame again in the third program, favoring the same foot as the day before. His owner, Glenda, wisely chose to paddock scratch him in favor of running at 100% another day. Finishing the day, then, as the high scoring racer was FTE Sealey who earned 3 ARX/NARX points. Winning all but one of her races, she displayed quick learning and earnest effort. Our second place meet winner was also an FTE, and Validus proudly picked up his first ARX/NARX points. We look forward already to seeing these two newcomers at our next event. Congratulations, again, to all the hounds and their owners. Everyone did so well; we are so excited for them and for you. Sunday’s conformation competition was judged by long-time Whippet owner and local resident Vicki Carter. Again, seven hounds participated, including one supplemental entry from Celox, another FTE on Sunday. We tried to make use of the same tree-shade as the day before, but somehow, the heat stuck with us more closely on Sunday. Undeterred, Vicki gave careful consideration to all her entries and had a remarkably gentle hand with our weary hounds. When all was said and done, she found the following individuals to have the most merit and in this order: Celox, Parker, Brom and Validus. Kudos to the owners and to their dogs who gave their best on the track and in the ring. And thank you to our judges from each day. We appreciate your opinion and your support of our event.

1st Celox with Larry Tally; 2nd Parker with Sami Hirko; 3rd Brom with Glenda Konopka; 4th Validus with Ingrid Tally

In closing, I would like to express how proud I am of Alamo Area Whippet Club who can now say officially that they have put on their own CWA meet – all by themselves and all for themselves. All our workers and all our entrants were AAWC members, and as a group, I believe we can take a moment to turn to one another and give a back pat. The labor was significant, but so too was the reward. We brought together all our resources and we were able to do alone what we could only do before with other’s help. Congratulations, guys. Job done well! -

Rock n Roll Whippet Association , Oberlin, Ohio, June 6th and 7th 2009

The weekend came with excellent weather for racing. Sunday was slightly warmer but pleasant. We had some rain earlier in the week to make the track excellent for the event. We had 30+ dogs both days with dogs from the East coast and Midwest. We also had the Wistwind dogs bless us in attendance. It was great to see them with there with their new owners.

Since we had the LGRA dogs and the Silken Windhounds running the same day we tried to keep the races moving along. Everyone cooperated and helped the others to box and pick up. Some helped to walk dogs out too. Also the whippet personnel line/ foul judged for the other breeds and the O.B. personnel did the same for the whippet races. So everything ran smoothly throughout the weekend.

Saturday’s competition was exciting with the high point race of Noble, Charlotte, Paige, and Brazen who finished in that order. Unfortunately, Noble opened up an old toe injury and was scratched which left the door wide open for the other three as they battled for the lead position from the 2nd through the 4th program in the high point races. The winners of the National points were Fred Luehrs’s Charlotte with 5, Carl Morgan’s Paige with 3 and the Arthurs’ Sawyer with 1. The high point winner for 5 ARX points went to Wistwind Graceful Rose (Gracie) owned by Barb Duffield, who was so very pleased since these were Gracie’s first ARX points. This win was a further testament to the Mountans’ last litter. I, for one, was convinced that the Mountans were “smiling down on them.” We then had a tie for the next set of 4 points. . 2 points went to Steve Shimer’s Wegner’s Good Queen Bess TRP (Bess) and 2 went to P. Booth’s Ch Shamasan A kind of Magic SC (Edward.) There were two FTE’s, Diablesse Surrey Hill Say Sorbet (Voges) owned by Karen Lee and Phoebe on the Wing FCh (Phoebe) owned by Caren and Joe Shoemaker.

Saturday’s conformation judge was Kaleena Lowther who sorted through her entry of very nice whippets. In the end she found her four placements. First went to Brimstone, owned by Carol Weber, second went to Lacy owned by the Doug and Mary Beth Arthur, in third place was Vendome whose owner is Karen Lee, and fourth to Jack owned by the Mountans and brought to the meet by Lynette“Ping” Pirrung. I can remember the Mountans sitting and watching their youngsters in the ring last year. Oh my, she would be so proud of this year’s win.

Well Sunday came and it was all about the Girls! Minnie D took the first High Point race with Charlotte and Paige close behind. But Charlotte would not have any of that and won the next three with Minnie D and Paige close behind. (photo left - first High Point and they’re OFF!!)

So Charlotte got the meet win and 5 NARX points, Minnie D 3 NARX and Paige 1 NARX, The ARX points went to a very nice running bitch Surrey Hill’s Ripon Jewel FCh (Jewel) owned by Karen Lee and Kristen Fredricks who took the top 5 ARX points followed by Steve Shimer’s Wegner’s Good Queen Bess TRP (Bess) with 3 ARX Points and long time whippet owner Cora Miller’s Ch Hound Hill Raffles (Raffles) Handled By Susan Bolduc 1 ARX Point

The match, judged by Patricia Princehouse, had Fred Luehrs’ Charlotte continue her winning ways by taking 1st, the Arthur’s Sawyer went 2nd, Mary Huff’s Minnie D went 3rd and a very proud with his very 1st CWA meets Joe Shoemaker’s Phoebe rounded out the top 4.

I was reminded that of course we had a very delightful lunch both days and I think we all had enough to eat, no one went away hungry!!!

I HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE THAT CAN MAKE THE 2009 CWA NATIONAL LABOR DAY WEEKEND HERE WITH US (RnRWA) IN OBERLIN OHIO !

We started Saturday with 24 dogs and one puppy. The weather wasn't too bad, cool with mixed sun and cloud, but a welcome change from the rain clouds that usually follow us around. This was my first meet as an "official" race secretary so with that in mind, I would like to thank everyone who lent a hand to help make the meet run so smoothly.

Our meet winner was Topa, earning the top ARX points. This is his third meet and his third win. He was closely pursued by Lacy. Next in line was FTE Vijay who picked up the bottom set of ARX points. Rounding out the top ten with some very close finishes was Trax, Donald, Tiercel, River, Cleo-C, Smoke and Lark. Congratulations also go out to Lark who finished her TRPX title in fine style with a Top Ten finish. Our “most appreciated” was the veteran, Corona. Our singleton puppy, Marshall, ran hard and should be a future contender.

Once again we had a fabulous turn out for the potluck, it has become even more intense competition than the meet itself!. After much debate and decision by “applause meter” Saturday's winner was, once again, Barb Barclay for her amazing cheesecake.

Ann Fessenden of Windwood judged the match and her top dogs were Smoke, Marshall, Vijay, and Tiercel. The DPC credit went to the puppy, Marshall.

Sunday

Sunday's meet was a bittersweet day for the RFF group as it marked the impending move for Janet and Bo Juzkiw, who joined us for lunch to say their final goodbyes. They both did so much for our group - Janet was the awesome, dependable race secretary and Bo our lure operator. Without them this group probably wouldn’t be what it is to today. So on behalf of the RFF group I would like to wish them the best of luck in their new adventure called retirement. We will all miss you.

We started the day with 23 dogs and one puppy. The weather took a little turn for the worse with cooler temperatures and more cloud than sun. We manage to squeak through the day with only a few isolated sprinkles of rain. Meet winner again was Topa who has only lost one race in 4 meets and finished his ARX and his NARX title in only 4 meets with 4 meet wins – you can’t do much better than that! Congratulations, Susan and Topa! BOS and 2nd in the meet again went to Lacy, and with that she also finished her TRPX title. Vijay followed in 3rd spot and picked up 2 more points - he is now on his way to his ARX title with picking up ARX points both days his first weekend competing. With some more close races to finish off the day we rounded out the top ten with Donald, Lexy, River, Cleo-C, Lark, and Cleo-S. Congratulations also go to Becca on finishing her TRP title and receiving her DPC title. Corona was once again our “most appreciated” racer. Marshall again ran hard in his final outing as a puppy. Lunch was again the highlight of the day with lots of food and great desserts. There was so much to choose from one never knows where to start. The winner of the best pot luck dish was Malinda Evans for yet another amazing dessert.

The match was judged by Helen Brettell from Washington (Lost Creek Whippets) and her top dogs were Lexy (DPC credit), Lark, Smoke, and Donald.

Malinda Evans with Lexy, Beth Levine with Lark, Laura Baratta with Smoke, Nancy Szabo with Donald

For being my first time being a race secretary I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to work with. You guys truly do make it Racing for Fun. I would like to once again, thank everyone for helping whether it was loading and/or catching dogs, line judging (Linda B., Nancy, Karen, Laura, Janet S., Ellen, Barb, to name a few), lure operating (Peter), box operating (Steve and Randy), or just being there when someone needed some help. Thank you, the meet couldn't have happened without all of you.

At our June meets, Racing For Fun bid a fond farewell to two of our most important participants – Bo and Janet Juzkiw. They have been involved since the beginning (7 years ago) and we will miss them more than words could ever say. Without them, there would be no CWA racing in Canada.

A little history lesson….June Harrison, Janet, Steve and I, Janet Stritychuk and Jennifer Hughes were the "founders" of Racing For Fun. June and I had been talking about starting CWA in Canada and the aforementioned met one day about 7 years ago at a small school in Abbotsford and RFF was born! When we lost June, Janet took over the reins as Race Secretary and we have never looked back. One of our biggest hurdles to overcome was a lure operator (we used to pay someone to operate for us) but then Bo stepped up and took over the position and did a great job the last few years. We weathered some pretty tough seasons when we could barely come up with 10 dogs for a meet and were pretty discouraged and ready to give up. We've had great times and we've had sad times - we struggled with the loss of two dear friends. But we continued on and now have very decent entries and a simply AWESOME group of people that put on our meets. I think we live up to our name - Racing For Fun, because having FUN racing our dogs is the number one priority for our group.

In honor of Janet and Bo, RFF/LMWA will be offering a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the year's High Score Show Champion (average points per meet). The Covenstead trophy will be a very prized trophy indeed.

To our dear friends, Janet and Bo, we all wish the best for you in “retirement” - may you enjoy much peace and happiness in your new location. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for Racing For Fun – you made it the outstanding group it is today.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WHIPPET FANCIERS - Suisun, CA June 27 & June 28, 2009

The CWA weekend was the greatest challenge that our club has had to face to put on a race meet. It is a great understatement to say it was hot. Blistering, sweltering, boiling would be better adjectives to use. Saturday topped out at 105 degrees and Sunday 106. The endurance of both dogs and people was tested to the highest degree. (No pun intended.)

An angel of mercy by the name of Jan Ferry set up a large kiddie pool filled with nice cold water. It gave well- needed relief to our hot little racers. I am sure that many of the owners were also tempted to lie in the pool. By the way, during the day ice was added to keep it cool.

In spite of the unbelievable conditions, our 10th anniversary meets were a huge success. Many friends from out of State and Canada came to join us in our celebration. A huge thanks you to Gail Wegner, Mary Huff and Connie Austin who came from the Mid-West to participate in these events. Thanks also go to our dear Canadian friends, Kate, Hugh, Marie and Barry who came down once again to give us their support. Sadly, due to being affected by the awful heat, they had to leave on Sunday morning and head to a cooler area. A nice surprise was seeing an old friend, Susan Elliott, back racing in our area. Thank you Susan, it was nice to see you in Northern California again

Saturday's meet was highly contested and we had some outstanding races. Listed below were the Top Ten: 1. Gem: - A precious little gem who wanted to win and "Did." She gave a performance that well deserved the top spot. 2. Minnie D: - She strongly challenged in every race and gave a solid showing. She is one tough little racer. 3. Dewey: - Sadly this fine running dog, who won two High Point races, had to be scratched in the 4th program due to a foot injury. We wish him a speedy recovery. 4. Topa: - Coming in from the cool Northwest, Topa was affected by the heat but still gave a strong performance. 5. Trax: - He also was a victim of the heat but ran extremely hard and well deserved his fifth place finish. 6. XL: - Surprisingly this fine racer was not bothered by the heat and showed that he could compete in 105 degrees. 7. Lacy: - It was obvious that this outstanding little racer was hit hard by the high temps but gave a 100% effort. 8. Ms Darcy: - She did her best and really enjoyed to be back racing again. 9. Sly: - He was the big surprise and ran great. Connie was one happy lady. 10.Mr Darcy: - Coming back from a serious leg injury and a rattle snake bite, he raced hard and showed that he is a real Champion.

The puppies all ran perfectly and each took a turn to win a race. Miss Jane, Miss Bennett and Ziggy are all going to be hot little contenders when they advance to adult racing. For their age they show great maturity and skill on the track. Their breeder must be very proud of them. (cough, cough, that's me and I AM proud of them.)

Saturday’s conformation match was judged by our visitor from WI – Gail Wegner, and she placed them:

1st: Ellie, 2nd: Tiger, 3rd: Luna, 4th: Hallie Sunday's meet started out with the same miserable conditions. HOT, HOT, HOT. It did not bother our tenacious little Whippets and they once again ran superbly. Here is the Top Ten finish: 1. Minnie D: - She ran absolutely awesome and proved that she too is worthy of being the meet winner. 2. Gem: - Still precious and still running very, very hot. (She matched the weather.) 3. Topa: - Ran well and seemed to have adjusted to the heat. 4. Sly: - Another strong showing from this handsome show Champion. 5. Pibb: - Showed the California dogs that he too could run in these torrid conditions. (But get me back to Wisconsin ASAP.) 6. Tiger: - Don’s star of the weekend ran hard and showed potential to be a future strong contender. 7. Ellie: - Not only is she beautiful but she is fast. This lovely lady won first place in both of the conformation matches. 8. Rudy: - Hard running and enthusiastic. Gave two days of great racing and made his Mother, Red, very proud. 9. Teak: - Another very handsome Whippet that proved he is now a true "Race Dog." 10: Bessie: - This sweet pretty bitch always gives it her best. A competitor with a big heart.

Again the puppies ran hard, they showed focus, enthusiasm and determination. They all look like future racing stars.

Ed Odron judged our Sunday match:

1st: Ellie, 2nd: Pibb, 3rd: Ruby, 4th: Imari

This report would not be complete if I did not mention the incredible club members, who by the way, go by their new name, "The Whippet Warriors.” They are very special people who deserve a very special thank you. Brad and Denise, you were exceptional and did "MORE" than I ever could have ever expected. Brad, in spite of the Trailer break in, the equipment was in excellent condition. (In case you did not know, the club trailer was robbed of several expensive items including the generator, all the tools, stakes, paint, etc., etc., etc.) We became aware that the paint was stolen just as we were ready to start the meet. Thanks to borrowing flour, cornstarch and sugar we finally managed to get a finish line. Brad, thanks for all your work at the meets and prior to the meets. I know you had many frustrating moments. Denise, you were a constant worker and made everyone happy with the coffee, donuts, and the large chest full of bottled water. I sure that between us we drank 12 dozen bottles. Todd and Donna, what can I say to show my appreciation to you both? Todd, thank you for doing the boxes, setting up, taking down and all the other things you did during the weekend. Donna, when help was needed, you were there. (and that includes the finish line.) My sincere help for taking care of me, your kindness was very much appreciated. To Russell and Emily my gratitude for your hard work and support. You were terrific. I only hope that we have not scared you off and that you will come back again next year. To my dear husband Vince, my sincere thanks for coming out and running the lure for us. You did a great job and it was appreciated by all. Kudos also go to Sarah, she came just help everyone run their dogs and give support where needed. I am so sorry that your car got damaged.

There are other wonderful members who came out to help and assist at our meets. These incredible people well deserve my gratitude for everything they did. To Mary Jean, Ed, Guin, Janet, Don, Frank, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are "THE BEST." An extra thank you has to go to Ed Odron who was not only the starter all day but also judged the Sunday match. He did a fabulous job and his line up was beautiful. Our visitor Gail, judged Saturday and she too had a line up of really lovely winners. My gratitude to you both.

Two friends, who come every year just to help us, are Jan Ferry and Sue Oace. Sue is the best scorekeeper in America and makes my job of doing the reports very easy. Her results sheets are always perfect. Jan, is the person that everyone needs at a meet. She can do anything and does everything. These two ladies have the appreciation and the respect of all our members. Thank you both so much.

My deepest apology if I have omitted to thank someone who helped. I can assure you it was not intentional. Happy 10th birthday to our CWA racers. Let's hope we can do it again next year in MUCH cooler temperatures. God Bless you all. (you know that I love you.)

GOPHER STATE WHIPPET RACING GROUP July 4-5, 2009, Cokato, MN

The 4th of July Fire Cracker Races were a great success and a fun time. My thanks go out to all the people who made it such a good weekend.

First and foremost, a big thank you goes to Mary Huff for offering to hold the meet at her home west of the Twin Cities in Cokato. Mary has developed a very nice racing track and worked hard to make sure the grass was fresh and green for the dogs. Mary’s property has plenty of shade for keeping the dogs cool between heats and plenty of exercise room for the dogs. We are looking forward to holding our September meet there, so plan on coming to Minnesota late in September to experience a perfect racing venue. You can even camp!!

I also want to thank David and Gina Samuelson and Bill and Janelle Johnson for all the hard work they did both days of the meet. Even though they had no dogs to run, they spent the whole weekend helping out wherever they could. Their support of our local club is appreciated and their hard work made it easier for the folks running their dogs.

Our lure operators were Bill Johnson, Fred Luehrs and Ule James. Box operators were David Samuelson, Fred Luehrs and Ule James. Thanks Fred and Ule for working so hard in between running your dogs. Gina and David Samuelson and Mary Huff took the lead in making sure the foul judge positions were covered. I expect most everyone had a stint line judging and we can’t have a race without all those line judges. So thanks to everyone who helped out.

Saturday morning began with clouds and a few raindrops. The neighboring rooster made sure all of us who spent the night there were up bright and early to ensure all was ready. Thanks to Fran and Barb Hearley, the boxes arrived safely around 8:00 a.m. The boxes are stored in Farmington and the Hearleys live in a northern suburb, so they had those boxes “following” their van for lots and lots of miles. Everyone arrived, inspection went well and thanks to Mary Beth Arthur’s help in getting the first heat of races organized, racing began in a timely fashion.

On Saturday we had 22 adults and 1 puppy running. Happily, we had 22 adults and one puppy finish. Always a good day when there are no injuries during a meet.

Ziggy proved himself well in his final races as a puppy and he was promoted to the adult races on Sunday. [pictured left) We had one FTE on Saturday and that was a pretty girl from Duluth named Midori. Once Midori learned it is better to stay face forward when in the boxes (she turned herself around her first two outings), she did quite well and made owner Irene proud.

With 22 adults we only had 4 races each heat so the day seemed to go by quickly. All the races were either 5 or 6 dogs with plenty of good competition and lots of work for the line judges.

Noble proved why he has the reputation he does by winning all 4 heats and being the meet winner. Gem and Charlotte ran a good competition for 2nd and 3rd and in the end Gem earned the 2nd set of NARX points. Now, who got those ARX points? It seems like I should remember that. I know Edward got some, but who else did? Where is my paperwork? Oh, of course, MY BESS tied with Edward and they split both sets of points and they each earned their ARX title! Needless to say, the Race Secretary had a hard time focusing on the last run of the day. It was nice that Edward and Bess finished together as they have been competing for points all spring. I am quite impressed with Edward finishing as he is 6 years old and CWA tends to be a sport for the younger whippet. Bess got her title with a streak of earning ARX points 6 times in a row and I am very proud of her for that.

After the meet we all went to Mary’s backyard for conformation match before the potluck. Janelle Johnson was the judge and after some serious study and putting the dogs and handlers through their paces chose GG, Sly, Fanta and Simmer as her top four, with Fanta earning the credit for win.

1st: GG, 2nd: Sly, 3rd: Fanta, 4th: Simmer

Then the real fun began. Thanks to Barb Hearley there were two tables filled with a lot of nice prizes for folks to choose from. Many thanks to those of you who added to the prize table. It is always fun to see what people pick. After the prizes Ule handed out award certificates for 2008. The day was topped off with a meal of fried chicken and lots of other goodies provided by all. I think the chicken was a hit as by Sunday only a few wings and legs were left. Lots of good salads and desserts too.

On Sunday we started at 8:00a.m., and thank goodness it was a beautiful day to help ease the pain of little sleep for some of us. The weather was very nice all weekend. Not too hot for July and certainly not wet or cold. Mary worried about the mosquitoes being a major nuisance, but they were not too bad.

On Sunday we had 21 adults and no puppies. Ziggy was an FTE and all Edward and Bess can say is “thank goodness he ran as a puppy yesterday” as he had an excellent debut by being 4th in the meet and earning 4 ARX points. Ruby earned the 2nd set of points and tied with her housemate Ryder for 5th and 6th in the meet. Minnie D won the meet and the top set of NARX points. The second set went to Charlotte.

Before I forget, our turtle winner both days was Henry. He had a good time racing and I think his “mom” enjoyed the prizes he earned.

On Sunday our conformation was Janell Honza and she was all business in the ring and inspected those dogs closely. After some careful consideration she chose Moses, Sly, Charlotte and GG as her top 4. Charlotte earned the conformation credit and is now a DPCX. Congratulations to Fred, Gina and little Fred.

After the match and prizes it was time to eat again before everyone packed up and headed home. Several of us stayed around to try and get Mary’s property back in order and by 4:00 or so I think Mary was able to nap in peace and quiet.

Thanks to Laurie Erickson for taking great photos at the meet on Sunday.
