Manjul Bhargava
The Work of Manjul Bhargava Manjul Bhargava's work in number theory has had a profound influence on the field. A mathematician of extraordinary creativity, he has a taste for simple problems of timeless beauty, which he has solved by developing elegant and powerful new methods that offer deep insights. When he was a graduate student, Bhargava read the monumental Disqui- sitiones Arithmeticae, a book about number theory by Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). All mathematicians know of the Disquisitiones, but few have actually read it, as its notation and computational nature make it difficult for modern readers to follow. Bhargava nevertheless found the book to be a wellspring of inspiration. Gauss was interested in binary quadratic forms, which are polynomials ax2 +bxy +cy2, where a, b, and c are integers. In the Disquisitiones, Gauss developed his ingenious composition law, which gives a method for composing two binary quadratic forms to obtain a third one. This law became, and remains, a central tool in algebraic number theory. After wading through the 20 pages of Gauss's calculations culminating in the composition law, Bhargava knew there had to be a better way. Then one day, while playing with a Rubik's cube, he found it. Bhargava thought about labeling each corner of a cube with a number and then slic- ing the cube to obtain 2 sets of 4 numbers. Each 4-number set naturally forms a matrix. A simple calculation with these matrices resulted in a bi- nary quadratic form. From the three ways of slicing the cube, three binary quadratic forms emerged. -

As Winnie Cooper on The Wonder interview Years, she captured the hearts and minds of a generation of viewers, and had one of the most-recognized faces Danica McKellar in America. More recently, McKellar has connected with an entirely new generation of young people—this time as an author whose captivating and empowering books on math have made the New York Times Best Seller List. In 2010, McKellar turned her attention toward multiplication, as she welcomed her first child into the world. EDGE Assignments Editor Zack Burgess caught Danica at home in California between books and, it turns out, between feedings. EDGE: You are a new mom, a working actress and a best-selling author. Are your math skills finally being tested when it comes to dividing your time? DM: (Laughing) I’m not sure if the skill that’s being tested now has ever been in a category of my life before: Sleep Deprivation. There’s not a lot of math that has come into being a mother yet, but I’m sure that there will be. One other thing, I’m breast- feeding—so there is no formula, no bottles, no calculation of how many ounces and how often. There’s just breastfeeding on demand, the most non-mathematical way to go. ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY OF TOPOLOGICAL SPACES I GUILLERMO CORTINAS˜ AND ANDREAS THOM Abstract. We use techniques from both real and complex algebraic geometry to study K- theoretic and related invariants of the algebra C(X) of continuous complex-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff topological space X. For example, we prove a parametrized version of a theorem of Joseph Gubeladze; we show that if M is a countable, abelian, cancella- tive, torsion-free, seminormal monoid, and X is contractible, then every finitely generated n projective module over C(X)[M] is free. The particular case M = N0 gives a parametrized version of the celebrated theorem proved independently by Daniel Quillen and Andrei Suslin that finitely generated projective modules over a polynomial ring over a field are free. The conjecture of Jonathan Rosenberg which predicts the homotopy invariance of the negative algebraic K-theory of C(X) follows from the particular case M = Zn. We also give alge- braic conditions for a functor from commutative algebras to abelian groups to be homotopy invariant on C∗-algebras, and for a homology theory of commutative algebras to vanish on C∗-algebras. These criteria have numerous applications. For example, the vanishing cri- terion applied to nil-K-theory implies that commutative C∗-algebras are K-regular. As another application, we show that the familiar formulas of Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg and Loday-Quillen for the algebraic Hochschild and cyclic homology of the coordinate ring of a smooth algebraic variety remain valid for the algebraic Hochschild and cyclic homology of C(X). Applications to the conjectures of Be˘ılinson-Soul´eand Farrell-Jones are also given.
