View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repozytorium Instytucjonalne Krakowskiej Akademii X: 2013 nr 1 Christopher Lazarski ROUSSEAU AND THE ROOTS OF MODERNITY The general will is always right, but the judgment that guides it is not always enlightened.1 Since Machiavelli, man and woman have become the center of political theory as the sole source and the ultimate sanction of political order. The theoretical order – contemplated by classical Greek philosophy and the Judeo-Christian tradition as the origin, the measure and the limit of political order – was rejected, at first as irre- levant and later on as non-existent. During the Enlightenment, theories of progress, the state of nature, and the social contract replaced the transcendent order. Man and woman were to lift themselves by their own bootstraps from misery and despotism, and usher humanity into a secularized paradise. One summer day in 1749, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, just starting out as a phi- losopher and contributor to the French Encyclopedia, experienced a sudden illumi- nation while walking to Vincennes to visit his incarcerated friend, Denis Diderot (1713–1784). In the Mercure de France, he had found an announcement about an essay contest organized by the Academy of Dijon. “Has the restoration of the sciences and the arts helped to purify morals?” ran the prize question. The powerful inspiration prompted by this question became the starting point for the political theory that Jean-Jacques perfected throughout his life. He challenged the idea of progress, so central to the Enlightenment, and succeeded in placing his concept of omnipotent general will among the canons of enlightened teaching. -

Augustine and Rousseau on the Politics of Confession by Taylor Putnam A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Taylor Putnam Abstract This thesis looks at the widely acknowledged but largely unexplored relationship between Augustine’s Confessions and Rousseau’s Confessions. In particular, it argues that Rousseau’s text demonstrates an indebtedness to both Augustine’s treatment of time within eternity and the political figure of the Christian preacher. By first comparing their competing interpretations of original sin as told in Genesis and then tracing those interpretations through the autobiographical narratives of each text, it is argued that Augustine and Rousseau both offer their lives as examples of their respective understandings of human nature. Further still, Rousseau’s attempt to supplant Augustine’s autobiography with his own sees the Augustinian preacher reformulated into the figure of the solitary walker. As a result, what was a politics of the will restrained by the temporal horizon of man becomes unleashed as the imposition of the timeless imagination. i Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Newell for his willingness to have me as a graduate student and for supervising my thesis. PHL 656: THE SUBJECT OF POLITICS—JEAN JACQUES ROUSSEAU WINTER AND SPRING QUARTERS, 2015 PEG BIRMINGHAM Office: Clifton, Suite 150.20 Telephone: 325-7266 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Fridays, 1:30-2:30 and by appointment “Rousseau…was perhaps the first thinker of community, or more exactly, the first to experience the question of society as an uneasiness directed toward the community, and as the consciousness of a (perhaps irreparable) rupture in this community.” (Jean-Luc Nancy, The Inoperable Community) COURSE OBJECTIVES This course (which continues through spring quarter) will examine several works of Jean- Jacques Rousseau’s, including Discourse on the Arts and Sciences, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, On the Origin of Languages, Emile, and The Social Contract, in an attempt to grasp Rousseau’s understanding of the subject of politics in the double sense of the nature of the political and the nature of political subjectivity. Of particular concern will be Rousseau’s account of the move from the amour de soi to the amour proper wherein the complex relations between nature and culture, the individual and the political, reason and desire, and morality and freedom come into play. Understanding this movement of desire is central to understanding Rousseau’s political project insofar as he claims that the perversion of the amour-propre underlies all political and social disorder, leading to the corruption and violence of both the individual and society. In other words, it is the perversion of the play of recognition and desire that gives way to the most horrible states of violence. -

Travelling Films: Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films Goldsmiths College University of London PhD thesis (Cultural Studies) Ji Yeon Lee Abstract This thesis analyses western criticism, labelling practices and the politics of European international film festivals. In particular, this thesis focuses on the impact of western criticism on East Asian films as they attempt to travel to the west and when they travel back to their home countries. This thesis draws on the critical arguments by Edward Said's Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) and self-Orientalism, as articulated by Rey Chow, which is developed upon Mary Louise Pratt's conceptual tools such as 'contact zone' and 'autoethnography'. This thesis deals with three East Asian directors: Kitano Takeshi (Japanese director), Zhang Yimou (Chinese director) and 1m Kwon-Taek (Korean director). Dealing with Japanese, Chinese and Korean cinema is designed to show different historical and cultural configurations in which each cinema draws western attention. This thesis also illuminates different ways each cinema is appropriated and articulated in the west. This thesis scrutinises how three directors from the region have responded to this Orientalist discourse and investigates the unequal power relationship that controls the international circulation of films. Each director's response largely depends on the particular national and historical contexts of each country and each national cinema. The processes that characterise films' travelling are interrelated: the western conception of Japanese, Chinese or Korean cinema draws upon western Orientalism, but is at the same time corroborated by directors' responses. Through self-Orientalism, these directors, as 'Orientals', participate in forming and confirming the premises of western Orientalism. -

ROUSSEAU'S ENGAGEMENT WITH AMOUR-PROPRE Peter Fuss A number of years ago, while reflecting on the notion of self, I had occasion to wonder to what extent the French expression amour-propre had found its way into North American usage . Several standard American dictionaries had it, though flagged as being a foreign term . The translation given was self- esteem . I tried Larousse's small French-English, which offered two defini- tions : self-pride and self-respect . A considerably larger Cassell's gave four translations : self-love, self-respect, conceit, and vanity . Even this brief immer- sion in the ways of ordinary language was enough to bring out in me the frustrated philosopher, with his passion for making distinctions : Are self- esteem, self-love, and self-respect fundamentally the same things? And do any or all of these compounds amount or reduce to uncompounded conceit or vanity? Or is it that amour-propre is complicated, ambiguous, perhaps even in some sense "dialectical," so that self-respect and vanity mark out, respectively, its polar extremes? Lacking sufficient self-esteem (or is it conceit?) simply to retire to my study and think this through on my own, I cast about for inspiration . It took a while to find some . The passions and affections in general are not traditionally among the preferred subjects of the philosophical mainliners, who seem to have a distinctive passion of their own for quarreling about the so-called higher, more noetic human faculties . -

Date…..…10-Jan-2013……… 2 ABSTRACT The thesis analyses contemporary South Korean films from the late 1980s up to the present day. It asks whether Korean films have produced a new cinema, by critically examining the criteria by which Korean films are said to be new. Have Korean films really changed aesthetically? What are the limitations, and even pitfalls in contemporary Korean film aesthetics? If there appears to be a true radicalism in Korean films, under which conditions does it emerge? Which films convey its core features? To answer these questions, the study attempts to posit a universalising theory rather than making particular claims about Korean films. Where many other scholars have focused on the historical context of the film texts’ production and their reception, this thesis privileges the film texts themselves, by suggesting that whether those films are new or not will depend on a film text’s individual mode of address. To explore this problem further, this study draws on the concept of ‘concrete universality’ from a Lacanian/Žižekian standpoint. For my purpose, it refers to examining how a kind of disruptive element in a film text’s formal structure obtrudes into the diegetic reality, thus revealing a cinematic ‘distortion’ in the smooth running of reality. -
