  • Ladino and Indigenous Pageantry in Neocolonial Guatemala
THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: LADINO AND INDIGENOUS PAGEANTRY IN NEOCOLONIAL GUATEMALA by Jillian L. Kite A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL August 2014 Copyright by Jillian L. Kite 2014 ii iii ABSTRACT Author: Jillian L. Kite Title: The Eye of the Beholder: Ladino and Indigenous Pageantry in Neocolonial Guatemala Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Co-Advisors: Dr. Josephine Beoku-Betts and Dr. Mark Harvey Degree: Master of Arts Year: 2014 In this thesis I utilize a feminist case study method to explore gender, race, authenticity, and nationalism in the context of globalization. Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. On the contrary, during the westernized ladina pageant, contestants strive to adhere to western beauty ideals beauty and cultural norms engendered by discourses of whiteness. However, when the winner advances to the Miss World Pageant, they misappropriate elements of Mayan culture to express an authentic national identity in a way that is digestible to an international audience. In the study that follows, I examine the ways in which national and international pageants are reflective of their iv respective levels of social and political conflict and how they serve as mechanisms of manipulation by the elite at the national and global levels. v THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: LADINO AND INDIGENOUS PAGEANTRY IN NEOCOLONIAL GUATEMALA I.

  • Power of Protein (PDF)
Dear Friends, It is with much passion that I’m writing, updating and organizing this information to share with you. My desk and all available space has been literally covered with the latest research as well as the timeless ‘golden oldies’ of protein information, stories, and how that translates into the dietary guidelines and grams per pound of desired body weight for today, both for the sedentary and for the very active. Did you know that we lose 5-10 lbs. of muscle every decade if we’re not doing strength training? Wayne Wescott, B.S., M.S. Phys. Ed, PSU and Ph.D from Ohio State. Dr Wayne Campbell adds: If you’re between 50 – 80 years of age, you need 50% more protein than the RDA just to maintain. 25% more protein above the RDA if you’re younger. I invite you to journey with me. Let’s get informed and get vibrantly healthy together. Ever hear the story of the little boy who’s grandfather instructs him on how to skip a stone across water? As the ripples are being created the Grandfather explains how we are like those ripples. Each ripple has an effect on the next. Likewise, our vibrations that we set forth into the Universe have an affect on many. And the better we feel, the happier we are and that can be contagious! Let’s be contagious together. I’m smiling at you, :o) Linda The Story of Protein The word ‘protein’ from Greek, literally means of ‘first importance.’ The ‘building blocks’ of protein are the amino acids.

  • Examining Communication Satisfaction, Confucian Work Dynamism and Job Satisfaction: a Comparative Study of International and Domestic Hotels in Hainan, China
SEARCH: The Journal of the South East Asia Research Centre ISSN 2229-872X for Communications and Humanities Vol. 8 No. 1, 2016, pp. 105-127 Examining Communication Satisfaction, Confucian Work Dynamism and Job Satisfaction: A Comparative Study of International and Domestic Hotels in Hainan, China Wang Hua School of Communication Universiti Sains Malaysia Bahiyah Omar School of Communication Universiti Sains Malaysia © The Author(s) 2016. This article is published with open access by Taylor’s Press. ABSTRACT This study examines hotel employees’ communication satisfaction and job satisfaction levels in Hainan, China. The Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) were used in the investigation. This study also measures the Chinese working culture, Confucian work dynamism, and examines its relationship with hotel employees’ attitudes toward communication and job satisfaction. Using a survey and stratified sampling techniques, 40 sets of data were obtained from the staff working at four domestic and four international hotels operating in Hainan. Data were analysed using PLS analysis. The testing of measurement model shows that communication satisfaction measure for international hotel model was different from the measure for domestic hotel model. The results of structural model testing, on the other hand, show that both organisational communication satisfaction and Confucian work dynamism had significant effects on job satisfaction. Confucian work dynamism positively interacted with communication satisfaction in predicting job satisfaction, making it a significant moderator to the relationship between communication satisfaction and job satisfaction. All these relationships were found significant in both conditions; international and domestic hotels. The test of significant difference between the two models, however, yielded insignificant results.
