FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2015 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER CHILDREN’S LITURGY 21

Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith

WWW.SCONEWS.CO.UK 22 CATHOLICISM & ISLAM SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2015 A widening of Faith and a changing relationship DR HARRY SCHNITKER, in his series on the history of Islam and Catholicism, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND ISLAM looks at Christian nations’ failed attempts to encircle the Islamic nations

OR most of the medieval period, the contact of Catholicism with Islam was confined to the Middle East and North Africa. Europe is a peninsula of Asia, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Sailing techniques for most of this period allowed Christians to cross the Mediterranean, navigate the BalticF and North Sea and sail for Iceland, Greenland and the fishing banks of Newfoundland, but not beyond. To the east lay the vast plains of Asia, itself almost sea-like. It has to be admitted that the traditional view of the European Middle Ages as a static society has been vastly overstated. Medieval people travelled far more than commonly known. It has been estimated that one in every three travelled on long- distance pilgrimages, for example. Medieval peasants moved house, at least where legally permitted. In England, one can trace families moving from Devon in the south, via EastAnglia to Yorkshire in the north. Overland travel certainly saw some reach beyond the Islamic frontier. Famously, there was the journey by Marco Polo (1254-1324), who worked his way across the Asian landmass and made it to Beijing. He was not the only European to manage this feat, and whereas Polo’s journey was inspired by the search for profit, other journeys to China were inspired by the Church. A first mission led by Fr John of Montecorvino (1247- 1328) followed hard on the heels of the Polo journey. Montecorvino opened a Catholic church in 1299 and another in 1304, both close to the imperial palace. For a while, there were a number of Catholic dioceses in China and there seems to have been good relations with the Imperial court. This, of course, suited the Papacy, whose geopolitical dream was an encirclement of Islam. However, to the dismay of the missionaries, there were already Muslims at the court, and, in the longer term, Chinese traditional religions like Buddhism proved to be too impervious to the lure of either monotheistic faith. For those early travellers beyond the known frontier with Islam, the enormous eastwards spread of that faith came as a deeply unpleasant surprise. Marco Polo’s negative comments on Islam have been a subject of discussion recently (they are seen as ‘Islamophobia,’ a rather odd anachronism, or as confirming the ‘evil’ of Islam, which is what Polo believed it to be, of course!). There is a simple reason for his negativity—through the long and hard travels he came to realise the enormous effort that would be required to carry out the Papal dream of encircling Islam. south of Cape Bojador, effectively for the southern 1330s, he found the cities grown rich on their trade by Muslims. However, in Malacca, as in East hemisphere, in the Bulls Dum Diversas (1452) and in gold, ivory and slaves. Kilwa went into decline Africa, the Portuguese discovered yet another n the centuries that followed, new technology Romanus Pontifex (1455). In return, they expected just as the Portuguese were arriving. They managed major Muslim population. Although Islam had allowed Christian Europe gradually to expand the Portuguese to carry the Faith beyond the lands to conquer some of the Muslim cities, but never arrived later here than in either India or East its horizon. It has become politically incorrect controlled by Islam. quite ousted them altogether.
