It was much helped by a working-group I conducted at the University of Nijmegen consisting of advanced students in Ancient History in the autumn of 1983: Peter Beelen, Tim Dijkstra, Ad Franken, Steef Geurden, Fred Hendriks, Léon Hermse, Elena Janner, Burgie Koopman, Harry de Korte, Kiek Offermans and Marc van der Velde laid the foundations for the collection of cases and helped to develop the interpretations of the facts. Several colleagues who heard of my ‘hobby’ told me about interesting cases and literature: in this respect I have to thank my colleagues in the Department of Classics in Nijmegen: A.Bastiaensen, L.de Blois, J.- J.Flinterman, A.Kessels, P.Leunissen and W.van Loon. P.van Minnen and H.S.Versnel in Leyden and E.Eyben (Leuven-Belgium) drew my attention to some interesting literature. The Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z.W.O.) contributed to this study by conferring a travel grant which enabled a stay at the Fondation Hardt in Vandoeuvres-Geneva during the spring of 1988. My British colleague in Classics Teacher Training at Durham University, Richard Smith, undertook the painstaking task of removing Dutchisms and outright faults from my English. In June 1989 I enjoyed the hospitality of his home and the discussions we had then were very helpful in clarifying many ideas. Finally, many thanks are due to Mariken van Groenestijn, dimidium animae vitaeque meae, who critically and conscientiously read the first Dutch draft and helped considerably to improve the work in style and thought. xi LESS THAN AN ANIMAL, MIGHTIER THAN A GOD If there really was a single and perfect god, would he be able to do absolutely anything? When the Homeric pantheon was being replaced by monotheistic ideas, ancient philosophy came across this tricky theological problem. Homer’s Olympic gods had overcome the manifest limitations of human existence; in accordance with the Homeric epithet easy living they were unacquainted with the toiling of man. As always living they were not to fear death. But after the idea of a single god had got a firm footing, the omnipotence which had to be accorded to the god—ho theos—remained a disturbing attribute. Christian theologians who conformed to ancient thinking later will wonder whether God is able to undo what has been done: can he bring back an ex-virgin to her former integrity? Before that, in the first century AD, Pliny discovers tragedy in God’s almightiness: But the chief consolation for nature’s imperfection in the case of man is that not even for God are all things possible—for he cannot, even if he wishes, commit suicide, the supreme boon that nature has bestowed on man among all the penalties of life (Natural History 2,27)1 According to this ancient view at least in one respect man is mightier than god. But is man obedient to nature, physis, when using this superdivine power? The argument that suicide is not ‘in accordance with nature’, physei, was advanced by Flavius Josephus among many other considerations which prompted him to renounce suicide when he and other Jewish fighters had hidden themselves from the Romans in a cavern under Jotapata. During his whole remaining life he was vexed by self- criticism and reproaches from his fellow-Jews: why had he not shared the heroic end of his comrades? During the Jewish War Massada had not been the only instance of collective self-destruction That is why self- killing plays such a conspicuous part in the books Josephus wrote in xii LESS THAN AN ANIMAL, MIGHTIER THAN A GOD Greek as a favourite of the Flavian emperors2 Most comprehensive is the speech Josephus put into his own mouth at Jotapata. In that apologia pro vita he uses very diverse arguments against self-killing which have been borrowed from Jewish as well as ancient thinking: it is not allowed to tear apart body and soul. Falling in action brings honour, but self- destruction is a cowardly and outrageous act. A suicide is like a pilot who fearing a tempest sinks his own ship before the storm.

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the opinion of medical students from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, about passive euthanasia, active euthanasia, and their personal posture on the topic. Material and Methods: Using a three-part questionnaire, 1,319 medical students of the first three years of medical school, from three of the four medical schools in the state, were interviewed. The questionnaire included questions on demographics, religion, and the personal posture of the student on active euthanasia, passive euthanasia, and their personal posture on the topic. Results: Of those interviewed, 44.4% were in favor of active euthanasia, 52.1% of passive euthanasia, and 44.8% had a positive personal posture on the topic. Age and grade were not significant variables for the posture of the students, but the variable gender showed a predominantly positive posture in the male subgroup for active (p=0.001) and passive euthanasia (p=0.031). Religion and the importance of religion/spirituality in daily life were the most significant factors (p<0.005) for the interviewees to hold a negative posture in each of the three scenarios.

Most Christian religions do not accept it, even in cases of extreme pain or discomfort. Despite the fact that attitudes towards suicide in Christianity have evolved over the years, it is still regarded as a mortal sin and a serious crime against God, punishable in Hell. The sense of hopelessness of an individual, who may be convinced that ‘no matter what he does, it always ends in failure’, was similar to Durkheim’s anomic suicide.3 Durkheim used the term anomie with reference to the lack of any moral regulation, which can also be a suicidal factor.

    SUICIDE MISSIONS: POWER OF THE POWERLESS AND POWERLESSNESS OF THE POWERFUL Dr. Qadar Bakhsh Baloch∗ Abstract: Suicide attacks have clearly become the most effective modus operandi of modern insurgencies, in a sense, that, the very act of the attack is reliant upon the death of its executor. However the argument that suicide attacks is solely a religiously inspired phenomenon is completely misleading. This paper thoroughly examines the misperceptions about and motivations behind suicide attacks. It uses the multidisciplinary approach to support the argument that suicide attacks are essentially used to meet the secular and strategic goal of compelling the withdrawal of foreign military forces from illegally occupied lands. Introduction Suicide mission or suicide attack1 is an “operational method in which the very act of the attack is dependent upon the death of the perpetrator”.2 Suicide attacks have clearly become the most dangerous modus operandi of modern insurgencies, and in a sense, the suicide attack is the insurgents “smart bomb”. It is a reaction against brutal occupation & exploitation. The suicide attacker is no more than a platform that carries the explosive charge to its target. However, this platform can think and, therefore, see to it that the explosive charge is detonated at the optimal location and timing so as to create maximum carnage and destruction.3 It is a rare phenomenon of 1980s4 that has gone widespread during the last two decades and acquired a new dimension and impetus in the 21st century. Since 9/11 it has come to be known as the ‘power of the powerless and powerlessness of the powerful’5.

In this respect, believing that this article requires a historical backround, I shall start with a brief history of euthanasia and suicide in order to understand the present juridico-medico-political complex from which the sovereign power derives its philosophical underpinnings and theoret- ical justifications today; and show that the relationship power and death has always been very problematic. Secondly, I will focus on the meaning(s) of the disappearance of death in the context of Foucauldian biopolitics and conclude that, in contrast to Foucault’s consideration, something akin to re-discovery of death has taken place in the Western world since the mid-twentieth century. Finally, in the third and last part of the article, I will put forward that Agam- ben, by introducing the concept life unworthy of being lived, was successful in completing what is missing, that is the politics of death, in Foucault’s notion of biopolitics with reference to the problem of euthanasia.

Keywords: Results: The shocking exposition of suicides reveals the zeitgeist of each era and illustrates the prevailing Ancient Greece concepts. Social and legal reactions appear ambivalent, as they can oscillate from acceptance and Ancient philosophy interpretation of the act to punishment. In the history of these attitudes, we can observe continuities and Ancient Rome breaches, reserving a special place in cases of mental disease. The delayed emergence of a generally Greek tragedies accepted term for the voluntary exit from life (the term suicidium established during the 17th century), is Suicidal behaviour connected to reactions triggered by the act of suicide than to the frequency and the extent of the phenomenon. Conclusions: The social environment of the person, who voluntary ends his life usually dictates the behaviour and historical evidence confirms the phenomenon.

López González Suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages: Literary Representation of Self-Aggression and Transgression Abstract Suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages: Literary Representation of Self-Aggression and Transgression studies the artistic representation of suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages. Through an interdisciplinary approach, this dissertation analyzes the way in which medieval Spanish people perceived and reacted to suicide and suicidal drives (namely, despair). Influenced by Plato’s philosophy, Saint Augustine helped shape the belief system and doctrines of the Church regarding self-murder, which condemned suicide on the grounds of the fifth commandment (non occides). Like the Church, the State also adopted a condemnatory legislation against those who had chosen death.

Messinger* The medical community has fundamentally changed how we think about life and death. Humans in privileged parts of the world are living longer and have access to life-saving treatment. The focus on quantity of life then has shifted to emphasizing quality of life and questioning whether longevity should at the expense of comfort or satisfaction. The conversation surrounding quality of life, and by extension end-of-life care, has included whether a competent adult has a right, or should have a right to end their own life on their own terms.
