CMS Left Navigation Training Editing the left navigation • Log into myscranton.edu and select the pencil to access the CMS system

Under all of your main folders in CMS, you should see a block called left-nav-setup.

• If you don’t see a left-nav-setup block, you can add one. Click on “Add Content” in the blue at top of screen. In drop-down , click “setup” and then “left-nav-setup.” Click on the “placement folder” field, then select browse to find and select your home folder (e.g. the Physics Department).

• Once you have a left-nav-setup block created, click on it in your asset tree to select it. o Then click the “Edit” icon at the top right of your screen.

Adding another link in the left-navigation bar: o Go to one of the Left Nav Items on the edit screen and click the green “+” sign.

o Click the box that says “Choose File, Page, or Link” – that will open up a where you can browse through already existing links and pages, or upload a new link. Select a link from the list and click the “Choose” .

o Enter a name in the Custom Link (see top picture on this page). This name will be what appears in the left navigation bar when you see it on the website. o Click “Preview Draft” and then click “Submit.” o YOU WILL NEED TO RE-PUBLISH YOUR ENTIRE PARENT FOLDER so that the left navigation bar will be updated on all of your web pages. To do this, go to the asset tree on the left side of the screen, right-click on your parent folder, and then click “publish.”

Creating an external link: o Click on your “external-links” folder in the asset tree. ______If you don’t have that folder, can create one under your parent folder by following these steps: ▪ In the blue ribbon at the top of your screen, click on “Add Content” ▪ In the drop-down menu, select “Default”, then select “New Folder” ▪ You’ll see this box pop up:

▪ In the “Folder Name” field, enter the name “external-links.” ▪ Make sure the Placement Folder field has the correct folder for where you want to store the External links folder. ▪ In the Display Name field, enter “external-links” ▪ Click “Submit.” The folder will soon appear in your asset tree on the left. ______

o Open another window in your and find the page for which you want to create a link. Copy the URL.

o Go back to the CMS window, and in the blue ribbon at top of screen, click “Add Content.”

o In drop-down menu, select “Default,” then select “External Link.”

o The box below will pop up. Enter a name the “Link Name” field. You do not have to use hyphens in the name for an external link. In the Display Name field, enter the same name.

o Scroll down further to these fields:

o In the “Link” field, paste the URL that you copied. Then click “Preview Draft” and then click “Submit.” o The new external link will appear in your external links folder in the asset tree on the left.

Adding the new external link to the left navigation bar: o Go to the asset tree and click on the left-nav-setup block in your parent folder. Then click the edit icon in the upper right area of the screen.

o Scroll down to the first Left Nav Item, and click the “+” sign to add a new item.

o In the field for the new Left Nav Item, click within the “Choose File, Page or Link” box.

o Then click “Browse” to find the link you just created.

o When you have found the link and selected it, click “Choose” in the top right.

o Below the “Choose Link” field is the “Custom Link Label” field. Whatever you type in here is what will appear in the left-nav bar on your webpage. By default, the system will pull the display name of the link. If you want to override that, enter a different name.

o Below “Custom Link Label” is “Open in New .” Choose “yes.” (For internal links, you would choose “No”.) o Click “Preview Draft” in the upper right corner and then click “Submit.” o In the asset tree on the left, right-click on your parent folder and then click “publish.” This action will publish the changes you have made to your left navigation bar.
