Catherine Hoffmann ESQUISSE D’UNE VISION FANTASTIQUE DANS A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME D’ANTHONY POWELL La séquence romanesque A Dance to the Music of Time, généralement définie comme une vaste fresque de la société anglaise de 1914 aux années 1970, semble, à première vue, appartenir à la tradition du roman de mœurs et s’ins- crire dans la veine du réalisme comique. Or, la lecture de l’ensemble de l’œuvre révèle la présence de nombreux « ingrédients » fantastiques, indices de l’existence de forces obscures, difficilement cernables, agissant sous la sur- face de l’univers narratif. Certains personnages troubles — mages, voyants, pervers — appartiennent très manifestement à cette catégorie. Ils ne traverse- raient cependant le texte que de manière très anecdotique si leurs aventures ne se déroulaient dans un décor soigneusement mis en place par le regard du narrateur, Nicolas Jenkins. Le narrateur-personnage est d’abord, essentielle- ment, un descripteur dont la vision du monde et la relation qu’il en donne passent nécessairement par un réseau complexe de mémoire d’œuvres anté- rieures, réelles ou imaginaires. 1 Les descriptions que fait Jenkins des divers lieux de l’action ne sont donc pas de simples adjonctions au récit mais forment des éléments constitu- tifs d’un projet esthétique global dont les emprunts à l’univers fantastique sont l’un des aspects. Anthony Powell's a Dance to the Music of Time
Anthony Powell’s A Dance to the Music of Time with Wesley Stace 12 monthly sessions on Zoom Tuesdays, March 9, 2021 – February 8, 2022 6:00–8:00 p.m Reading all twelve novels of Anthony Powell’s A Dance to the Music of Time over one year with novelist and musician Wesley Stace. Participants will receive the Zoom link before the first session. A Dance to the Music of Time by Nicholas Poussin (c.1635) A Dance to the Music of Time, a twelve-volume set of novels by Anthony Powell, was published between 1951 and 1975. Powell’s own life (1905-2000) spanned the 20th Century and his masterpiece reflects this, examining English political, cultural and military life from 1920. Clive James thought Dance - taken as a whole - the best modern novel since Ulysses. Time magazine included the novel in its 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. The editors of the Modern Library ranked the work as 43rd-greatest English-language novel of the 20th century, and the BBC ranked the series 36th on its list of the 100 greatest British novels. Narrated by Powell’s stand-in, writer Nicholas Jenkins, Dance is a panoramic portrait of a society that was vanishing before Powell's eyes, and of which he was one of the last writing representatives. The arc takes us from Jenkins’ schooldays - where he meets the colourful central characters whose lives will weave in and out of his own - to his final days as a literary grandee. By the finale, Widmerpool, once the butt of their schoolboy jokes, has become a memorable villain: the banality of evil incarnate. -

Jung’s theory of synchronicity in his work, it is a principle that is central to that mysterious level of life in Powell’s novels he has referred to as the “music of time”. Powell’s music of time readily accommodates a Jungian key; in fact he hints at such an accommodation himself at one point in A Dance to the Music of Time when he makes more than passing reference to Jung’s theory of psychological types. But beyond Jung’s typology, it is Jung’s theory of meaningful coincidence that provides a key to the underlying vision of Powell’s novels. Both Powell and Jung found in the reality of coincidence a higher meaning, a sense that secret harmonies were being sounded beneath the clatter of happenstance. What Powell called the “music of time,” Jung developed into a theory he called “synchronicity”. But both took as their starting point the fact of coincidence - especially what Jung termed the “fascinating coincidence. Fascinating coincidences are indeed rife in all twelve volumes of Anthony Powell’s A Dance to the Music of Time. These uncanny “secret harmonies” suggest that transcendental forces are operating in the lives, brief and otherwise, of the characters who caper across the pages of Powell’s remarkable series of novels. After reading A Dance to the Music of Time, one comes away with a feeling that all has happened as it was somehow meant to happen, outside the realm of ordinary calculation and choice. -

The dissertation draws attention to Power’s unusual method of collecting which was characterised by his buying of work in quantity, considering it in depth and at leisure in his own home, and only then deciding on what to keep or discard. Because of the auto-didactic nature of his education in contemporary art, Power acquired work from a wide cross section of artists and sculptors in order to interrogate the paintings in his own mind. He paid particular attention to the works of Nicolas de Stael, Jean Dubuffet, Asger Jorn, Sam Francis, Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly, Francis Picabia, William Turnbull and Howard Hodgkin. -

He liked the story so much that he began full-colouir illustrations but only finished three before being killed during World War II. The book presents those three colour illustrations with the sketches he produced initiall 4to, original quarter red cloth boards and illustrated blue dust jacket. The authors include Simon Martin, head of Curatorial Services at Pallant House Gallery, curator of the exhibition, and Jane Stevenson and Andrew Lambirth as other contributors. Far from the restrained abstraction of modernism, Burra went for men’s foibles and eccentricities (he was not afraid of coming out as a gay personality and as a painter of drag queens and tarts) but also for men’s darker sides, which caught his interest during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
