Pulselli, Riccardo M. Pulselli, Nicoletta Patrizi and Nadia Marchettini ABSTRACT The paper presents the results of a project on the Province of Florence (Italy), investigating the availability and use of water resources by emergy evaluation. The study is devoted to the analysis of the watershed of the Sieve River, tributary of River Arno that feeds Florence and its surroundings. Along the river an artificial basin has been created by means of the Bilancino dam to preserve water quantity and quality, and to protect the Florentine area from dangerous periodical inundations. Different specific emergies of water can be identified along the course of the river, especially before and after the Bilancino dam. The aqueduct system of the province of Florence is fed by several rivers and torrents. Here we consider Stura, Sieve and Arno rivers. It is fragmented and divided into many subsystems, slightly interacting with each other. -

Cooper Thesis submitted for the Qualification of Ph.D. University of Warwick. French Department. September 1997. Summary This thesis focuses upon French colonial discourses at the height of the French imperial encounter with Indochina: 1900-1939. It examines the way in which imperial France viewed her role in Indochina, and the representations and perceptions of Indochina which were produced and disseminated in a variety of cultural media emanating from the metropole. Framed by political, ideological and historical developments and debates, each chapter develops a socio-cultural account of France's own understanding of her role in Indochina, and her relationship with the colony during this crucial period. The thesis asserts that although consistent, French discourses of Empire do not present a coherent view of the nation's imperial identity or role, and that this lack of coherence is epitomised by the Franco-indochinese relationship. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that French perceptions of Indochina were marked above all by a striking ambivalence, and that the metropole's view of the status of Indochina within the Empire was often contradictory, and at times paradoxical. -

Huffer All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Tiffany Trimmer, Advisor This study examines world history education in the United States from the late 19th century through 2002 by investigating the historical interplay between three mechanisms of curricular control: scholarship, curriculum recommendations, and textbook publishing. Research for this study has relied on unconventional source classification, with historical monographs which defined key developments in world history scholarship and textbooks being examined as primary sources. More typical materials, such as secondary sources analyzing philosophical educational battles, the history of educational movements, historiography, and the development of new ideologies from have been incorporated as well. Since educational policy began trending towards increasing levels of standardization with the implementation of compulsory education in the late 1800s, policymakers have been grappling with what to teach students about the wider world. Early scholarship focused on the history of Western Civilization, as did curriculum recommendations and world history textbooks crafted by professional historians of the period. Amidst the chaos of two World Wars, economic depression, the collapse of the global imperial system, and the advent of the Cold War traditional accounts of the unimpeachable progress of the Western tradition began to ring hollow with some historians. New scholarship in the second half of the twentieth century refocused world history, shifting away from the cyclical rise and fall of civilizations model which emphasized the separate traditions of various societies and towards a narrative of increasing interconnectedness. -

Exposition - documents from the archive of Scuola Normale Superiore Presented by: Alberto Lusiani - Physics researcher at SNS Maddalena Taglioli - Head archivist at SNS Chiara Visentin – SNS Student, Virtual Immersion in Science Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa was formally founded in 1810, by a Napoleonic decree which dealt with “places of public instruction” in Tuscany, part of the French empire since 1807 and referred to as the departments of Arno, Ombrone and Mediterraneo in the terminology used in revolutionary France at that time. Scuola Normale was to be a subsidiary of École Normale Supérieure of Paris, granting 25 publicly funded places, for students in the humanities and sciences. Scuola Normale began operating in 1813 and only for one year, as in April 1814 Napoleon was forced to abdicate. “Normale” refers to the mission of the school, which was to train middle and high school teachers able to convey “norms” in a context where training teachers was connected to “forming” citizens loyal to the laws and the emperor. Scuola Normale and École Normale did not initially have the denomination “Superiore / Supérieure”. In France, after the institution of the “Écoles Normales primaries” in 1845, the School was denominated “École Normale Supérieure”. In 1846, the grand duke of Tuscany, Leopold III, established the “Scuola Normale Toscana”, also called the “ Scuola Normale of the Imperial Reign” - as it was then connected to the “Theoretical and Practical” Austro-Hungarian system – designed “to train teachers and masters for secondary schools”. After the Italian unifcation, the “Scuola Normale of the Kingdom of Italy” was formally established in 1862. -

After years of negotiating a treaty, Deane hardly knew how to respond to the request to leave France so soon after his long-awaited success. Only one month earlier, the American deputies in Paris – Silas Deane, Benjamin Franklin, and Arthur Lee - had successfully convinced the French government to declare public support for the fledgling American state with treaties of Amity and Commerce. Cognizant of the necessity of foreign aid to combat the might of the British Empire, the deputies had worked tirelessly to persuade a reluctant French ministry to openly court British retaliation by allying with the colonies engaged in revolt against their mother country. Advisor: David Armitage Author: Dzavid Dzanic The Civilizing Sea: The Ideological Origins of the French Mediterranean Empire, 1789-1870 Abstract This dissertation examines the religious, diplomatic, legal, and intellectual history of French imperialism in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria between the 1789 French Revolution and the beginning of the French Third Republic in 1870. In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean. -

Merryman and Milligan (and Mccardle) JOHN YOO* It has been said that only Jesus and Shakespeare have been the subject of more works than Abraham Lincoln. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't still keep trying to get things right. I am going to be adding to that body of literature, on the relationship between Lincoln, the Supreme Court, and the Civil War. The cases that I address here make up two federacy, in Indiana, who was tried and sen thirds of the three "m"s of the Supreme Court's tence by a military commission-an old form encounter with the Civil War: Ex parte Mer of ad hoc military court established by com ryman, 1 Ex parte Milligan,2 and Ex parte Mc manders for the trial of violations of the laws Cardle. 3 All three case names bear the styling of war and the administration of justice in oc "ex parte" because all three were brought on cupied territory. behalf of citizens detained by the armed forces In these two cases, federal courts ordered ofthe Union. Darnton Society of Fellows, Harvard University Brissot's life seems a parable of his time: as one authority put it, "II est, des sa jeunesse, l'image complete de toutes les aspirations d'une generation."' This picture of the complete prerevolutionary man comes from Brissot's memoirs, where he appears steeping himself in Rousseau; publishing denunciations of decrepit institutions; forming secret revolutionary cabals; comparing insurrections with radicals of Geneva, the Low Countries, England, and the United States; reading; writing; plotting; living and breathing for the fourteenth of July. But a man seen from his memoirs looks different than when viewed from account books or police reports. A new examination of Brissot's career, based on less partial sources than the memoirs, may add some shadows and some flesh tones to the traditional portraits of him.
