On behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah and The Issaquah Kiwanis Foundation, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 36th Annual Issaquah Community Benefit Auction. We are delighted you are here to join in a new twist to our typical auction, a ‘50s Sock Hop. Enjoy hopping in your socks while you help us to help needy and vulnerable members of our community. You are an essential partner and we couldn’t achieve the Kiwanis mission without you. Every penny we raise tonight goes directly to helping us fulfill our mission. What is our mission? Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Our Kiwanis Club provides funds and volunteer service to over 40 nonprofit organizations doing good, right here in Issaquah. We support service leadership and development opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities. The needs of children and young adults are Priority #1 for Kiwanis. Last year, the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah provided $110,000 to our community in grants to nonprofits and support of our service leadership programs. Members contributed more than 12,000 hours of volunteer service. During the live auction, you will have an opportunity to contribute directly to our “Fund- an-Item” partner, the Issaquah Nourishing Network. The Issaquah Nourishing Network recognizes that the key to a hunger-free Issaquah rests in the hands of citizens taking action in their communities. Their model supports passionate and diverse community members in self-organized, self- sustaining ways by connecting new and existing local projects to a larger network of people and organizations. Your contribution can help end hunger and bring food security to children and adults who go to school and work hungry nearly every day. Please enjoy the great company, wonderful food and music tonight! We hope you find some items that you can’t live without and bid accordingly. Dance ‘til you drop, open your heart and pocket book wide, and help us make our community stronger and healthier. Thank you for coming. Thank you for bidding generously. Chris Brandt Chris Brandt Kiwanis Club of Issaquah President Dear Auction Attendees, Thanks for greasing your hair back, putting on your poodle skirts, sweaters and saddle shoes and joining us for a good time and supporting a good cause. The Issaquah Nourishing Network (INN) is proud to have the support of the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah. The relationship INN has with Kiwanis is essential in making a dent in ending hunger in Issaquah. We are honored to have our network selected as a raise the paddle partner this year. This proves the commitment level the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah has for our mission to make sure all our citizens have their basic needs met. The strength of our network is truly in the connectedness of the partnerships and friendships we develop, and as an auction attendee we invite you to not only dance your socks off, but to be a thread in our “net.” The Issaquah Nourishing Network has a vision that we can weave a service and care net so tight that no one can slip through. By “we” I’m referring to all of us: you, me, our local nonprofits, our neighbors, city government, businesses, concerned citizens, volunteers and service groups. One in five children is hungry in King County. This number is astounding and it is happening in our own back yard. 59% of the individuals served at the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank are children 0-18 and senior citizens. The food banks are key partners in addressing hunger issues but they are not the only solution. The solution begins with community- wide ownership of the problem, and that is what Issaquah Nourishing Network is doing. Issaquah Nourishing Network was incepted in October 2011 and we are making a positive impact in our community. Our 90 plus members have increased awareness of free food resources in Issaquah with our Meal Cards, provided Breakfast Food in all our Title I schools, grown more than a ton of food for the Food Bank, provided 1,000 backpacks to children in need and partnered on a huge holiday gift giving program. We continue to build on our successes and expand our ability to make a greater difference for our community. What’s next for INN depends on you! Our 2013 goals are to: Publish and distribute a Community Resource Guide Develop a Fruit Tree Gleaning Program Create a food delivery program for homebound citizens Educate our community about hunger Expand home gardener and Pickering Barn contributions to the Food Bank Expand Breakfast Food to all Issaquah District Schools Expand the Summer Lunch Program Partner again on Tools4Schools to make sure every student has the supplies they need to be successful in school Thank you for being a part of the hunger and basic needs solution. Please help us expand our network so that we can truly make sure each and every neighbor has adequate food resources in their pantries.
