(Eugene O’Neill: Eines langen Tages Reise in die Nacht) Der konspirative Kontext oder Wo ist das Problem Nackte Despotien bedürfen keiner vielen und großen Worte zur Rechtfer- tigung ihrer Gewalttätigkeit. Moderne Diktaturen aber wohl. Sie haben das Bedürfnis, ihren totalen Machtanspruch hinter einem ideologischen Ge- wand zu verhüllen, das aus den Fasern der Philosophie und der Ethik ge- webt und mit den Emblemen utopischer Verheißung bedruckt wird. Sie bedürfen des Wortes, der Sprache, die eine Programmatik generiert, die, je monumentaler und edler sie daherkommt, desto besser für das zu Verber- gende ist. Ideologischer Wortschwall auf der einen, Konspiration und Ge- heimnis auf der anderen Seite kennzeichnen derart verfaßte Gesellschaften. Das Gewaltige (Übermenschliche) und das Unbekannte verbinden sich zu einem konzentrierten Amalgam, das auf Menschen anziehend zu wirken vermag oder, wo es eher Abstoßung hervorruft, doch ertragen wird, da es sich in seiner Undurchsichtigkeit ins Unendliche zu dehnen scheint. „Ein guter Teil des Ansehens, das Diktaturen anhaftet, liegt darin, daß man ihnen die konzentrierte Kraft des Geheimnisses zubilligt, das sich in De- mokratien auf viele verteilt und verdünnt. [...] Als die Konzentration des Geheimnisses bezeichnet man das Verhältnis zwischen der Zahl derer, die es betrifft, und der Zahl derer, die es bewahren.“1 Hinzu gezählt werden müssen noch die im Zwischenbereich angesiedelten Geistesarbeiter, die das Geheimnis der Macht sprachlich verhüllen, und die bestallten Sicher- heitsexperten, die es konspirativ hüten. Die Macht möchte durchschauen, jedoch nicht durchschaut werden. „Jeder, der etwas weiß, wird von einem anderen bewacht, der aber nie erfährt, was es eigentlich ist, das er im ande- ren bewacht. Er hat jedes Wort und jede Bewegung des ihm Zugewiesenen zu verzeichnen; indem er des öfteren über sie berichtet, vermittelt er dem Herrscher ein Bild von der Gesinnung des Überwachten. Doch der Wäch- ter selbst wird auch überwacht, und der Bericht eines anderen korrigiert den seinen.“2 Deshalb die überdimensionierten Geheimdienste, deren ers- ter Auftrag ein innerer ist. Doch sind moderne Diktaturen, die aus Gründen politischer Zweckmäßigkeit auf die leise Androhung der Gewalt setzen, dabei die demonstrativ dröhnende Variante keineswegs ausschließen, je- 1 Elias Canetti: Masse und Macht, München 1976, S. 24 f. 2 Ebenda, S. 20. 7 doch möglichst vermeiden, von Konspiration notwendigerweise gänzlich durchdrungen. Um sich nun aber nicht ins Schweigen zu hüllen und den Beherrschten Raum zu geben, die Leere zu füllen, braucht es sinngebende Worte, die diese besondere Form des Herrschens begründen. Und dafür werden die Wortgewaltigen benötigt, die traditionellen „Meister des Wor- tes“: Intellektuelle, Philosophen, Schriftsteller. Solch eine moderne Diktatur war die DDR. Sie bedurfte vieler und gro- ßer Worte, um sich eine menschheitsgeschichtlich entstandene und aktuell mißbrauchte Utopie des Allen-sei-alles-gemeinsam als Deckmantel über- zuwerfen. Die attributive Erweiterung zur „konkreten Utopie“ erweckte zudem den Anschein, als sei die Gesellschaft auf dem heilsgeschichtlichen Weg und Gleichheit und Freiheit das absehbar erreichbare Ziel. Insofern trifft die Selbstbezeichnung – oder besser: Selbstbezichtigung – der DDR- Gesellschaftswissenschaftler als „Ideologieproduzenten“ das Wesen der Sache. Da diese Intellektuellen mehrheitlich nicht etwa unter Androhung von Gewalt Ideologie produzierten, sondern zu großen Teilen freiwillig, überzeugt von der gesellschaftspolitischen Perspektive und in erklärtem Bündnis mit der Macht, läßt sich deren Verhältnis zur Führung nicht auf das Gegensatzpaar Geist – Macht reduzieren. Zwar scheint der pointierte und probate Topos von der geistlosen Macht und dem machtlosen Geist, die sich unvereinbar gegenüberstehen, recht griffig, doch ist die DDR- Wirklichkeit, die komplexer war und damit komplizierter, mit dieser Logo- ficatio-post-festum nicht in den Griff zu bekommen. Utopiegestützte Dik- taturen sind intellektuell offenbar außerordentlich verführerisch und er- möglichen ein breites Spektrum von Denk- und Verhaltensmustern, die sich nicht auf das Schwarz-Weiß-Schema und die extreme Alternative Machtteilhabe oder Widerstand reduzieren lassen. Gleichwohl wirkte auch in der DDR die alte Antinomie von Geist und Macht, von Autor und Staat fort, bei der es um eine wechselseitige Furcht geht: Die Schriftsteller fürchten das Einengen ihrer künstlerischen Freiheit, der Staat fürchtet, daß diese poetische Freiheit seine politische Macht in Frage stellt. Das Muster der Unvereinbarkeit war historisch geprägt und wurde unter anderen von Heinrich Mann als unversöhnlich beschrieben: „Ein Intellektueller, der sich an die Herrenkaste heranmacht, begeht Verrat am Geist.“3 Und einer, der über dreißig Jahre ein Staatsamt bekleidete, resümierte: „Sowie ein Dichter politisch wirken will, muß er sich einer Partei hingeben, und sowie er dieses tut, ist er als Poet verloren.“4 Goethe fügte dem noch an, daß der Dichter dann dem „freien Geist“ entsagen und sich die „Kappe der Borniertheit“ über die Ohren ziehen müsse. In einer Diktatur wird der Literatur, die sich nicht mit dem Bild, sondern dem Wort eine Legitimation zu verschaffen sucht, eine besondere Rolle zugewiesen, die allerdings mit dem Auftrag und dem Ethos kollidiert, die ihr evolutionär, also natürlich zugewachsen sind. Dabei war und ist die Literatur engagiert, doch nicht im historisch kurzatmigen und utilitären, auf die Bedürfnisse einer Ideologie
