  • British Home Child Group International
August, 2018 British Home Child Group International Brantford, Barnardo’s and Ignatius Cockshutt by Sandra Joyce Barnardo’s, as well as other organizations that supported sending child migrants to Canada, depended greatly on the support of wealthy philan- thropists on both sides of the ocean. Most of the philanthropists were highly religious and believed that it was their moral obligation to help the poor. One of the wealthiest men in Canada during his lifetime, Ignatius Cockshutt, was no exception. A founding father of Brantford and a member of the Inghamites (a Methodist sect), Cockshutt believed it his Christian duty to help others who were not as fortunate as he was. Not only was he a regular financial contributor to Barnardo’s, he also offered to help place British Home Children in the Brantford area. The Cockshutt family emigrated to Canada in July 1827 when Ignatius was sixteen. Originally, his father, James Cockshutt, had planned for the family to move to Pennsylvania but on their journey across the ocean, a friend convinced James to go into business with him in York (Toronto). This lasted only one year as James then decided to become a general merchant. In 1829, he opened a branch of his business in Brantford which was still part of the Six Nations reserve. Ignatius was to run the store. It failed after only one year, as white settlement in the area was slow. Caucasians were viewed as squatters. Two years after the town-site was taken over by the crown, Ignatius persuaded his father to reopen the branch.

5 weaPons of mass seduction Performing Pop Masculinity To all intents and purposes Harry Styles, unofficial frontman of internationally renowned boy band One Direction, could easily be mistaken for a young Mick Jagger (see Figure 5.1). The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender.

CALL THE HANDS OCCASIONAL PAPER 9 Issue No. 9 July 2017 THE SINKING OF HMAS ARMIDALE ON 1st DECEMBER 1942 The following address was delivered by Dr Kevin Smith OAM to members of the Naval Historical Society of Australia in Sydney 18 April 2017. In 1798 at the Battle of the Nile, the French flagship “L’ORIENT” gravely disabled His Majesty’s Ship BELLEROPHON (known to her crew as the “Billy Ruffian”). Immediately a pack of other British vessels concentrated their attack upon L’ORIENT. A flagship carries the commander of a fleet, and bears the commander’s flag. Amid the wreck and carnage of battle the French admiral’s thirteen year old son stood bravely to his post awaiting his father’s permission to leave. The boy, Louis de Casabianca, died at his post when L’ORIENT’s magazine exploded. In 1829, a whole generation later, Felicia Hermans wrote her poem “Casabianca”, beginning with the words: “The boy stood on the burning deck Whence all but he had fled. The flame that lit the battle’s wreck Shone round him o’er the dead.” Every Australian schoolboy growing up in the 1920s and 1930s, a century later still, heard about or occasionally even read that poem, although very few of us ever remembered any of the details. Many impressionable young minds, however, absorbed its powerful message. Young Edward Sheean growing up amid the green farmlands and forests of Barrington south of Ulverstone in Tasmania, was one of those who almost certainly would have known the first line of this poem.
