Et in Arcadia Ego Mary Beard and John Henderson Before he wrote his monument al Aeneid, Virgil produced a collection of shorter 'pastoral' poems, the Eclogues or Bucolics. These evoke a very different world from the epic adventures that led to the founding of Rome. They take us instead outside the historical world of cities, politics, and war, to a place where herdsmen sit untroubled beneath shady trees that give shelter from the midday sun, trading songs or lamenting their ill-luck in love; meanwhile, their animals rest, or take water, in the heat of the day. This idyllic setting is Virgil's 'Arcadia' – a special 'elsewhere', where the imagination can escape mundane time and tune into the original scene of singing. It is a place where minds can wander, and poets and musicians have returned there ever since, re-imagining this community where song means more than status or possessions. But at the same time Virgil pictured his idyllic world as already threatened. The city and its wars cast long shadows across the lives and songs of the herdsmen and farmers. Some, for example, face arbitrary eviction and exile; some, equally arbitrarily, are spared and even rewarded. These are decisions imposed from Rome – and far exceed the understanding of the Arcadian singers. Virgil's vision includes both the innocence of song and the encroachment of massive forces bound to destroy its delicate fragility. In the centre of the Eclogues is a poem in which two herdsmen exchange songs to mark the death of the archetypal, mythical singer, Daphnis – their inspiration. -

In Bologna in the 1580s the Carracci had organized gatherings of artists called the Accademia degli Incamminati (academy of the initiated). It was one of the several such informal groups that enabled artists to discuss problems and practice drawing in an atmosphere calmer and more studious than that of a painter’s workshop. The term ‘academy’ was more generally applied at the time to literary associations, membership of which conferred intellectual rank. -

Burton’s words invoke the gallery of maps Pope Alexander VII assembled in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome in 1665 and animate Sutton Nicholls’s ink-and-wash drawing of Samuel Pepys’s library in London in 1693 (Fig. 1).2 There, in a room lined with bookcases and portraits, a map stands out, mounted on canvas and sus- pended from two cords; it is Giovanni Battista Falda’s view of Rome, published in 1676. -

Ezequiel Adamovsky Russia as a Space of Hope: Nineteenth-century French Challenges to the Liberal Image of Russia Introduction Beginning with Montesquieu’s De l’esprit des lois, a particular perception of Russia emerged in France. To the traditional nega- tive image of Russia as a space of brutality and backwardness, Montesquieu now added a new insight into her ‘sociological’ otherness. In De l’esprit des lois Russia was characterized as a space marked by an absence. The missing element in Russian society was the independent intermediate corps that in other parts of Europe were the guardians of freedom. Thus, Russia’s back- wardness was explained by the lack of the very element that made Western Europe’s superiority. A similar conceptual frame was to become predominant in the French liberal tradition’s perception of Russia. After the disillusion in the progressive role of enlight- ened despotism — one must remember here Voltaire and the myth of Peter the Great and Catherine II — the French liberals went back to ‘sociological’ explanations of Russia’s backward- ness. However, for later liberals such as Diderot, Volney, Mably, Levesque or Louis-Philippe de Ségur the missing element was not so much the intermediate corps as the ‘third estate’.1 In the turn of liberalism from noble to bourgeois, the third estate — and later the ‘middle class’ — was thought to be the ‘yeast of freedom’ and the origin of progress and civilization. Morse’s Gallery of the Louvre In an effort to educate his American audience, Samuel Morse published Descriptive Catalogue of the Pictures. Thirty-seven in Number, from the Most Celebrated Masters, Copied into the “Gallery of the Louvre” (New York, 1833). The updated version of Morse’s key to the pictures presented here reflects current scholarship. Although Morse never identified the people represented in his painting, this key includes the possible identities of some of them. Exiting the gallery are a woman and little girl dressed in provincial costumes, suggesting the broad appeal of the Louvre and the educational benefits it afforded. PEOPLE 19. The Painter and the Scullery Boy: Pietro da Cortona in Nineteenth-Century Children’s Literature* Lindsey Schneider Pietro Berrettini (1597-1669), called Pietro da Cortona, was one of the most influential artists in seventeenth-century Italy and was celebrated as the premier decorative painter of his generation, most notably for his ceiling in the Barberini Palace in Rome (1633-39). His reputation began to suffer soon after his death, however, due in large part to changing standards of taste that no longer tolerated the extravagances of the High Baroque style that he helped to develop and with which he is indelibly linked.1 In 1692 the director of the French Academy in Rome, Matthieu de La Teulière, reported back to Paris that, ‘Pietro da Cortona and his school have spread such great debauchery here, operating under the guise of virtuosity, *<+ giving everything over to the whims of their imaginations,’2 and made similar statements the following year, in which he charged Cortona, Bernini and Borromini with ruining the fine arts with their excess.3 This view endured over the ensuing centuries and the trope of the Baroque as a diseased and cancerous style – with Cortona as one of its prime vectors of transmission – became commonplace in art-theoretical literature. Nearly a century after La Teulière, Francesco Milizia vilified the same trio of artists, saying that Cortona, along with Borromini and Bernini, ‘represent a diseased taste – one that has infected a great number of artists’.4 In London around the same time, James Barry singled Cortona -

75 ANN JENSEN ADAMS REPRODUCTION AND AUTHENTICITY IN BERNARD PICART’S IMPOSTURES INNOCENTES In 1768, nearly thirty-five years after the death of Bernard Picart, English critic William Gilpin opined: Picart was one of the most ingenious of the French engravers. His imitations are among the most entertaining of his works. The cry, in his day, ran wholly in favour of antiquity: “No modern masters were worth looking at.” Picart, piqued at such prejudice, etched several pieces in imitation of ancient masters; and so happily, that he almost out-did, in their own excellencies, the artists whom he copied. These prints were much admired, as the works of guido, rembrandt, and others. Having had his joke, he published them under the title of Impostures innocentes.1 In the final years of his life, Bernard Picart — the leading illustrator to the French Huguenot–dominated book trade in the Netherlands — had written a defense of the reproductive prints that he intended to publish with a collection of some seventy- eight exemplary etchings by him after paintings, and particularly drawings, by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century masters as well as a handful after his own designs. A year after Picart’s death in 1733, his wife published his defense — titled “Discours sur les préjugés de certains curieux touchant la gravure” (A discourse on the prejudices of certain critics in regard to engraving) — and reproductive etch- ings along with a preface, a biography, and a catalog of his works under the title Impostures innocentes; ou, Recueil d’estampes d’après divers peintres illustres (1734; Innocent impostures; or, A collection of prints after various celebrated painters).2 Twenty-two years later, the essay and an abbreviated biography were published in English along with the original — and by that time deeply worn — plates.3 This culminated a life as one of Europe’s leading printmakers, first in Paris and after 1710 in the northern Netherlands. -
