2 www.stopout.org.nz . The First Word My blood is red… and gold! Today see’s us welcome Miramar Rangers to Hutt Park.

The league has only just moved into Round two so there’s plenty of football still to be played before the season reaches it’s conclusion.

We’ve recently had a good league run however that was tinged with a disappointing hiccup last week at Upper Hutt in a game we dominated but could not put away. We’re positioned just behind Miramar so look out for an attacking focus as we look to get our season back on track.

As many of you are aware we continued our run with a hard fought victory over a gallant but outclassed Inglewood side. After a nil all first half where we should been ahead by five we settled quickly after half time to cruise to victory.

Interestingly our next opponents had a similar victory over…. Miramar!

Well rest assured we’ll do our darndest next week to right the wrongs, gain victory over Napier and defend the honour of the Capital.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for our young side to test themselves against Central League opposition. Much has been spoken about the standard of the bottom half of Central being similar in quality to the top half of Capital Premier. Well in the last round of the Chatham Cup Up- per Hutt beat Central League team Tawa and yet Island Bay lost to Central League cellar dwellers

PN Marist... so there’s no conclusive evidence on that one!

Whatever happens, it’s an exciting time at Stop Out with us still being in the Cup. We’ll enjoy the occasion and with nothing to lose I’m confident the lads will put everything on the line to achieve a victory! Cap Premier P W D L GF GA Pt But back to today’s game. It’s been a few years since we’ve managed to Island Bay 8 7 0 1 18 6 21 beat Miramar so today is as good a Wgtn Utd 9 6 1 2 28 9 19 time as any to get our season back 9 6 1 2 24 9 on track. Upper Hutt 19 9 5 2 2 14 10 Miramar and Stop Out have a long Miramar 17 and proud history and intense rivalry Stop Out 9 4 2 3 21 11 14 but what doesn’t change is the mutual respect between our clubs. Olympic 9 4 2 3 19 16 14 That’s due mainly I think, because 9 2 3 4 7 11 both Miramar and Stop Out play an Waterside 9 exciting short passing brand of Marist 10 2 2 6 8 17 8 football. Long may that last and hopefully today we are entertained to Wests 10 1 2 7 12 42 5 a classic footballing encounter. Wainui 10 0 3 7 4 24 3 Good luck! 3 Chris Canton, President

Besim’s match reports

Rnd 8 vs Olympic 3-1 win (MHagarty BWinyard ASheikh) A high flying Olympic team came to Hutt Park full of confidence after a superb start to their Premier season having gained promotion the previous year.

We played some fine football in the first half with some neat build up play. Mike Hagarty side footed into an empty net after a superb move to give us a well deserved lead. Close chances to Sam and Fizz should’ve given us a greater lead but at the half we went in 1-0 up.

Straight from our own kickoff Olympic pinched the ball and waltzed through to equalise 15 seconds into the second spell. 1-1.

We settled down thereafter and got back into our rhythm and after Fisem was set free Brenton tapped home from Fisems pass for 2-1.

Abass finished Olympic off with 3 minutes to play with a calm finish and a 3-1 victory to keep us in the title race. MOM- Brenton Winyard

Rnd 9 vs Wainuiomata 5-0 win (LHartstonge SBlackburn FAden 2 SGulley)

Prouse park was the venue for our round 9 fixture against a Wainui team with many ex- Stop Out players. A difficult match was expected and we prepared well for it.

Our passing game only ticked in 10 minutes in and after a fine cross the impressive Luke Hartstonge found himself free to side volley home for 1-0.

A horrific challenge on Luke Wilson saw Wainui reduced to 10 men and this allowed us to move the ball freely across the park. Clinical fi nishing from Sam and Fisem gave us a 3-0 halftime lead.

We targeted playing out a good full 90 minutes and this we did with 2 more stunning goals to Fisem and Steve to wrap up a 5-0 win.

The pleasing aspect of this victory was our preparation and professional approach to a potentially tricky Open Mon-Thu 6am-8:30pm; Fri 6am-8pm; W/end4 8:30am-2:30pm fixture. Naenae Pool Building • Everest Avenue, Naenae • Ph (04) 567 5431

Round 10 vs Upper Hutt 1-2 loss (J Mason)

Defending champions Upper Hutt were our oppo- nents in a crucial fixture towards the title race. Our start was excellent. Immediate pressure with good ball movement and intensity saw us move Upper Hutt all over the park. A fantastic build up and Sam- my cross saw a lovely Fizz header tipped over the bar by their keeper. Steve then went close with a rasping volley that clipped the bar.

Halftime 0-0. With so much dominance we asked for the same intensity but with better delivery into the box to give us the edge. This we didn’t get. Our intensity diminished and Upper Hutt grew strength having weathered the storm. With 20 minutes to play Upper Hutt scored to take the lead after a defensive mix up and some sheer luck. The ball agonisingly finding its way across our goal line after their striker got a toe onto his challenge. Our character to get back into the match was good and with 10 minutes to play Brenton never gave up on a loose ball and crossed into the danger zone for Jamie to stoop home and elegantly finish at the far post with a neat header. 1-1. Our day ended on a sour note when with 3 to go after a midfield challenge the ball spun off into the path of their striker who laced home for 2-1. Yet again we were foiled at the end of a match we didn’t deserve to lose. The cruel nature of football won out today which sometimes can be the case with the beautiful game. MOM- Abass Sheikh

Chatham Cup Rnd 2 vs Inglewood 5-0 win (SGulley 2 RSteele 2 SBlackburn )

Inglewood made their way to Hutt Park on Queens Birthday Monday. After a gruelling physical fixture on Saturday we started without our usual intensity and spark. Chances went begging also and the halftime score of 0-0 was fair reflection on a poor effort from our team. With a good stern serving at halftime and the threat of egg on faces the players quickly came out for the second half and got into gear. Ball speed and movement killed off our opponents. With goals to Steve 2 Regan 2 and Sammy a comprehensive 5-0 saw us move into round 3 of the Chatham Cup which is the last 32 teams in NZ. MOM- Luke Wilson, Steve Gulley

At the halfway point in the season we sit 5th on the table but still very much in the title hunt. It will take a massive effort to win the league which the players are all well aware of.

Our fine Cup run continues with an appetising match against Napier. An exciting time for us all. This is a great chance for to showcase itself on the National scene. So get along and cheer your hearts for the Red and Golds on Sun 19th June.

Werewolves Argggggggghhhhhhhhwhoooooooo!!! Its been an odd few weeks for the Werewolves with a big win and a disappointing loss. Our season is nearly over and we have missed out on promotion yet again after doing the maths we can't finish any higher than 3rd. We still have the knock out cup coming up so are aiming to win that for a bit of pride an to make sure we make the most of our season.

We had our quiz night a few weeks ago on the 21st of May and i would just like to say thank you to Gary and Charlotte Watkins for providing us with the venue and a great spread!!! A big thank you to Colleen from the Bellevue who provided us with her time and quiz soft- ware for free and was our quiz master on the night and did a fantastic job. I'd also like to say thank you to the following people for donating prizes. Village Beads Petone, Kay Burt and Westfield Queensgate, Hardy St Quality Meats, TVNZ Avalon Studios, Bellevue Gar- dens Establishment, Burger Wisconsin Lower Hutt. Thank you all for your great prizes it was fantastic that we could give nearly everyone a prize on the night.

Here's how we have got on the last two weekends;

Werewolves 9,Dan Murphy 2, Michael Burt 2, Blair Watkins 1, Mike Leprou 1,Kieran Page 2, Unkown 1 vs North Phat Boys 2One arm dude 1,Daniel Oconnell (own goal) 1

Special game for us was our 2 year anniversary of the death of team member and good friend Tim Turner. We went out there to win for him and came away with a great result. Went down 1 goal early in the first ten minutes but after waking up were up 3 - 1 at half time after 2 fantastic goals from Daniel Murphy and one from Michael Leprou.

2nd half we cut loose scoring 6 more and nearly got to the double digits after hitting the post a couple times. We had heaps of fun and was a great day down at hutt park for football. Thanks to Mike Holmwood for reffing us like he always does at home.

Werewolves 2—Kieran Page 1, Daniel Murphy 1. UniRangers 3

Played at Anderson park at the botanical gardens and was another great day for football. We went down in the first half 1 nil and pulled 1 back straight after the kick off in the 2nd half only to conceded another goal straight away. Pulled it back to 2 all after a close range header by Kieran Page but only to conceded another soft Supporters of the goal straight away. We weren't ourselves and to be fair Stop Out Werewolves the other team didn't deserve to win.

We dominated the game with great passing but struggled with some leaky defence and not enough shots on goal. Good fuel for the fire this week as we go out today against IBU the reds who we had a lucky draw against when we played them last at Wakefield park. Welcome to IBU and we6 look forward to the game today.

Tawa 9 2 1 6 11 26 7 Rnd 9 - 4th June, Hutt Park 2-1 win : Mel & Nicola Petone 9 0 0 9 4 41 0

Hutt Park is a little damp, with a cool northerly blowing as we welcome Miramar to our patch - for the first time in recent memory for a game of women's football. It's been so long they're all a bit lost - looking for the race track and greyhound hutches.

Miramar take first use of the breeze (& tide), and we try a 4-3-3 formation - a favourite of the coaches, with Kelsey upfront on the left. We're quickly into our work - but this Miramar team are a tight well organised team and with the breeze do enjoy good periods of positional dominance. To our credit we restrict them though to just a few half chances and long shots - well organised as always by Kathryn and Sophie, who cope admirably with the very wet southern end of the pitch.

We have some bright play down the left at times, Kels' in her new role well supported by Steph' B - while inside the pairing of Mel and Natasha is as combative as always. Gabby gets into her stride on the other wing - and in the middle period of the half we create some play on the right, with Cathy and Laura in support. Once again we strike at this level a strong defence, with a 'keeper in good form & after a few contested cor- ners & fluffed half chances it takes one of Mel's special barnstorming runs to break the deadlock - a smashing finish from 12 yards a fitting reward for her endeavour & skill.

The second half begins with us in control of the game, the defensive work a little easier at the dry end of the park - and now it's the turn of our attack to battle the wet under- foot. Gabby continues to take the game to Miramar out wide and she has in support Amalia who has slid into the re-jigged 4-4-2 out on the right.

10

Amalia stepping up her game another notch or two, a mixture of strength on the ball and sharp footwork impressing - she combines well with Gabby on the flank, as well as the roving Mel' and 'Tash playing inside her. Upfront we can't quite unlock the de- fence - Alana playing as the target, with some good ball also coming in from Steph' and Kels' out on the left. At the back the unflappable Steph' in goal is sharply off her line to snuff out attacks, and makes one superb save that ensures our slim advantage. A couple more pairs of fresh legs and not long after Dani' D and Nicola work well to- gether, teeing up Nicola who gives the keeper no chance with a well taken goal.

With fifteen to go it seems two will be enough - & it only just is, Miramar keep at us and get some reward with a well taken goal with about 10 to go. We learn our lessons though from earlier in the season - tightening our central defence, & see out the game well - nearly sneaking another on a couple of breaks, sweating a direct free kick, but we shouldn't have worried Steph' has it all under control - yet again. Afterwards, it's great to reciprocate Miramar's recent hospitality - share a chat or two over a drink, celebrate the Div 2 win over the Zimmers - but best of all hear that our nearest rivals North Wgtn & Waikanae have played out a draw and allowed us a 5 point buffer at the top of the table.

Women Div 2. Two from two! NME Electrical - Rnd 2: Stop Out 5 Lower Hutt 3 (Nicola4, Brianna) Supporters of Stop Out Women Another great day at Hutt Park, apart from some northerly gusts & a couple of inches of water on parts of the ground. No problem to the Div 2 team who were up against Lower Hutt - who had just dropped down from Div 1 - it shaped to be our first real test of the second half of the season. Our captain Rachel got us the wind to play into & the young team was up for the challenge with a dominant display of skillful passing & positional play. We were soon up by 3 - with 1 goal to Bri- anna and 2 to Nicola. Lower Hutt came back into the match - with a concerted effort and it was thanks to another Nicola goal that we went to the break up 4-3

The 2nd half scoreline belied our Women Div 2 P W D L GF GA Pt total control, with great passing from Katreena, Alysa, Phoebe and Brianna Wainui Z 2 2 0 0 12 2 6 - with brilliant support from Brooke S Valley 2 2 0 0 8 0 6 in her 50th game. The Last Word! Stop Out fan Michael Barton shares his views on football! The Professor gets it. About ten years ago I was dining at the Hotel El-Djazair, in the Algeri- an capital Algiers, with my friend Jeremy. Jeremy is a professor of Anthropology. In mid meal we spotted Said Chitour BBC stringer, fixer and all round good guy. We asked Said to join us. Conversation was a mix of our reasons for being in Algeria and Algerian politics. That is until the point where a football reference came up and Said and I left Jeremy behind with a chat about Algeria’s coach Rabah Madjer. Jeremy asked what had just happened and I replied that it was just a meeting of two members of the football tribe. Jeremy looked puzzled.

About six months later Jeremy called me and asked if I wanted to join him on a trip to the Sahara. It was easy to yes and two weeks later we were in the Air Mountains in the north of Niger at the village of Iferouane. I was walking through the village and the local “young bucks” invited me to join in a game of football. It would have been rude to say no. These guys were great with big skills built mostly around the fact that they had a very old tennis ball and not a football to play with. I gave up after about an hour. Too much heat and my legs had gone. Short version, I got back to our camp site covered in sweat and missing my t-shirt (swapped for a charm at game end). Jeremy asked me what happened and I had that one word answer for him “football”. Jeremy looked puzzled.

We left Iferouane and to cross the Ténéré, a huge sand plain, and finally on to the outpost of Dirkou. Larry who was travelling with us had been to Dirkou several years earlier and wanted to see if a Nigerian entrepreneur he had met had managed to set up a bar. We asked around and sure enough the bar now existed. The owner had made a satellite dish and on a tiny television he even had, wait for it, CNN. We were having a quiet drink and chat when a young guy interrupted. He asked me if I knew who “wanruni” was. I was a bit lost but then got it “You mean Wayne Rooney?” I asked. “Yes”, he said “and can you tell me if it is true that he earns £8,000 a week”. Several hours later we found Jeremy. We said football. Jeremy looked puzzled.

Finally three weeks later we were back at Algiers and Houari Boumedienne Airport. Waiting for our baggage I spotted a football team. It was Jeu-

nesse Sportive de Kabylie, or JSK, no less. They were changing planes on the way home from an away match. I went over to say hello as it would Homes of Distinction have been rude not to. There was no pretence about them they were more than happy to meet an English Registered Certified Builder of new homes, alterations and additions. fan. After handshakes all round I went back to join Jeremy.15 He looked and me and said “that’s foot- 021 781 691 ball” and he no longer looked puzzled.
