The question facing the McMaster women’s basketball team for 2017-18 is how to adjust to life after Danielle Boiago. The graduation of last season’s Player of the Year has left a significant hole in the Mac lineup, but there is a solid corps of returning veterans that are ready to make another run at getting to the OUA Final Four. Head Coach Theresa Burns is in her 25th season on the McMaster bench, and believes the Marauders are still in position to challenge for the OUA title despite the loss of some key graduates. “We have a strong team culture that is sustained year after year,” said Burns about being a consistent contender. “Our veterans lead by example and they demonstrate the key principles we operate by, which are work ethic, fitness, respect and gratitude.” Leading the charge will be a trio of seniors who will serve as co-captains of the Marauder squad this season. Guards Hilary Hanaka and Jelena Mamic, along with forward Linnaea Harper, will assume Hilary Hanaka returns all-star calibre skill and experience to the Marauder backcourt in 2017-18. bigger roles, and all three look ready to step up their contributions on-court and off. Hanaka and Harper have both been OUA all-stars, while Mamic has battled back from injury to become a defensive stopper and team leader. Senior guard Erin Burns also returns to provide solid experience, and having been through the grind of OUA conference play she understands what it takes to win. Sophomore guards Julia Hanaka and Brie Loebach are also available, and will supply outstanding depth and versatility. Up front, post Olivia Wilson was a member of the OUA All-Rookie Team last year, and she looks ready to become a solid presence in the paint for the Marauders. Other veteran forwards looking for playing time include seniors Lexi Spadafora and Adrienne Peters, and junior Evie Streight. Joining the team as recruits are guard Sarah Gates, post Clare Sharkey, and wing player Mia Spadafora, who were each exposed to high level basketball on the team’s preseason trip to Taiwan. Two more rookies, Alex Verboom and Melody Wyslobicky, earned spots on the squad through the tryout process, and will work hard in practice while adapting to the U SPORTS level of competition. Coach Burns is confident her new Marauders will mature quickly and be ready to contribute when called upon. Although the roster is relatively young, Coach Burns is counting on the senior leaders to get the team focused on finishing first in the reformed OUA West Division. “We will continue to use our depth as a weapon, relying on our fitness and work ethic to push the pace in every game,” added Burns. “Our non-conference schedule will allow us to challenge some of the top teams in the country, and that will help our young group prepare for the tough games we will face in the OUA.” The Marauders would like to thank all of the fans who come out to the Burridge Gym and support the team, making it one of the best playing environments in Canada.

Guiding her team to the OUA Final Four in 2017, Coach Burns returns for her 25th season on the Marauders sideline, as the longest-tenured coach in the history of her program.

Over that tenure, Burns has guided the Marauders to four OUA Championships and a CIS bronze medal. She has been recognized as an OUA Coach of the Year recipient on three occasions and was the CIS Coach of the Year in 2008. Burns was also named as the Fox 40 OUA Coach of the Year.

She has seen seven Marauders receive national awards, and five of her players have been honoured as All-Canadians. Most recently, guard Danielle Boiago became the first Marauder to receive the Nan Copp Award as the U SPORTS Player of the Year in 2017, having won both the OUA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards.

A standout player at the University of Toronto, Burns started her coaching career at Ryerson University before accepting the head coach position at McMaster. She has been a guest assistant coach with the Canadian Senior National Team.

Coach Burns lives in Westdale with her partner Marie and their three children, Meg, Colin and Tess.

18 18 2017-2018 McMaster Basketball Gameday Program McMASTER ATHLETES CARE

Now in its sixth year, the McMaster Athletes Care program continues to make a difference in the greater Hamilton community. McMaster Athletes Care mobilizes student- athletes who compete on Marauder varsity teams to provide them with opportunities to give back and engage in meaningful volunteer experiences.

Working alongside dedicated community partners such as the Boys & Girls Club, W.A.V.E. Afterschool, Living Rock Ministries, and Youth Routes Centre, student-athletes visit each centre weekly to teach youth the importance of living a healthy active lifestyle through sport. McMaster Athletes Care also facilitates regular visits to the McMaster Children’s Hospital, runs a camp scholarship program, and provides support to a number of youth initiatives within the City of Hamilton including the Neighbourhood Hoops program.

Volunteering in the community, our student-athletes serve as positive role models for youth. The strength of this mentorship was highlighted last year as members of our varsity football and women’s rugby team went out into the Hamilton community as part of our school visit program, Marauders in the Classroom. Student-athletes spoke to over 2,000 youth about the importance that teamwork, leadership, and commitment play in achieving your goals both on and off the field.

McMaster Athletes Care is excited to continue exploring new opportunities to grow and serve the Hamilton community in 2017-18!
