Ronald William Roskens Doctor of Humane Letters

Ronald William Roskens has served with distinction for the past eight years as president of the three-campus University of Nebraska system. In addition, he is chairman of the board of the American Council on Education, a Washington-based organization comprised of 1,600 presidents and chancellors of American colleges and universities. Ronald Roskens was born in Spencer, Iowa and raised on a farm in Clay County. He received a B.A. degree in social science from the University of Northern Iowa in 1953 and an M.A . degree in guidance and counseling two years later. In 1958, he received a Ph.D. degree in educational psychology from the University of Iowa. Dr. Roskens joined the University of Nebraska system in 1972 as chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He had previously served Kent State University from 1959 in a variety of administrative positions, culminating with vice president for university relations and develop­ ment. Prior to that he was assistant dean of men at the University of Iowa for four years and a teacher of social studies and speech in Minburn, Iowa. The University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association conferred an Alumni Achievement Award on Dr. Roskens in 1974. Other awards have included honorary degrees as well as the Commanders Cross, Order of Merit, presented by the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his "unstin t­ ing dedication to increasing international understanding" through exchanges of faculty and students. According to Dr. Roskens, his experience in 4-H club work has been a tremendous professional asset. He was a member of 4-H for nine years in Clay County, winning honors for his club projects. He is a national 4-H alumni award winner, and he credits his 4-H leadership opportunities with influencing him to seek a career in educational administration. Dr. Roskens' professional presentations are well respected, and his writings have appeared in such leading publications as The Journal ofHigher Education, The Journal ofEducational Sociology, American Educational Research Journal, and Personnel and Guidance Journal, to name a few. He is currently chairperson of the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association, and a member of several national educational and honor associations. In his record of public service, Dr. Roskens is a model of citizenship. He has been a member of a city planning commission, chairman of a cancer crusade, and a member of the local board of directors of YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, the chamber of commerce, Rotary Club, and United Community Services. He is an active member of the United Church of Christ, serving on the board of directors for the Board of Homeland Ministries, as president of the Kent State United Christian Fellowship, and as a member of the church's national Theology Education Study Commission. Ronald William Roskens is recognized by this University as the epitome of educational lead­ ership, scholarship and service. He is respected by his peers, his native and adopted states, and by all others who know and appreciate a truly outstanding individual. Upon the recommendation of the Honorary Degrees Committee, the Faculty Senate and the President of the University, and with the unanimous consent of the State Board of Regents, it is a privilege to present Ronald William Roskens for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Allen Walker Read Doctor of Humane Letters

Allen Walker Read is a distinguished scholar in the study of linguistics, lexicography and general semantics, having researched and written more than 200 papers on these and related topics. He is emeritus professor of English at Columbia University, where he taught from 1945 until his retirement in 1974, and a past president of several scholarly organizations. Allen Read was born in Minnesota and raised in Cedar Falls, where his father, O.B. Read, was a professor of chemistry from 1913 to 1940 at the University of Northern Iowa. Allen Read graduated from the Campus High School in 1922 and attended the then Iowa State Teachers College, graduating in 1925 with a B.A. degree in English. Professor Read received an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1926 and spent three years at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, receiving a B.Litt. degree in 1933. He also undertook further graduate study at the University of Chicago and the New School for Social Research. Writing in The New Yorker in 1948, H.L. Mencken stated that "Allen Walker Read ... probably knows more about early Americanisms than anyone else on earth." His lifelong interest in words began as an undergraduate, when he studied the origins (in Estherville, Iowa) of the word "blizzard" as a term used to describe a severe winter storm. Through editorial positions with the Dictionary of American English, American Speech, the American College Dictionary, Funk and Wagnall's Standard Dictionary, the Random House Diction­ ary of the English Language, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Professor Read has had a profound influence on a wide range of readers. He is an outstanding lecturer who has appeared before groups throughout the United States and abroad, and his production of scholarly work has continued at an even faster pace since his retirement. Professor Read's paper, '' An Account of the Word 'Seman tics,'" remains the classic discussion of that term and the tendency to confuse it with general semantics. He was the first serious scholar to study,7raffi~,i as a form of American literature, and he is the world's authority on the history of the term O.K. A colleague recently wrote: "All of the linguists I know have a very high regard for Professor Read's work, and a high affection for Allen Walker Read as a man." His sense of humor is well known: a presentation contrasting British and American humor, given recently at a national conference, reportedly received more praise than any of the 200 other papers presented. Allen Walker Read is recognized by this University for his long and distinguished career as a teacher, scholar and author. He returns to us, 60 years after his first graduation, an inspiring example of what an active, searching, and disciplined mind can achieve. Upon the recommendation of the Honorary Degrees Committee, the Faculty Senate and the President of the University, and with the unanimous consent of the State Board of Regents, it is a privilege to present Allen Walker Read for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

34 The Academic Procession The President's Party forms the first section of the academic procession. Headed by the com­ mencement marshal, it includes the president, members of the State Board of Regents and of the General Assembly, other platform-guests, and the vice-presidents, deans and other principal University officials. The commencement marshal carries the University Mace, designed and fashioned for the Centennial Commencement in 1976 by Randall Swanson, at that time a freshman majoring in Industrial Arts. A traditional symbol of authority, the mace is a carved wood rod capped with ends of cast bronze, with the top carrying the seal of the University. The sterling silver chain worn by the president was also created for the Centennial Commencement. It was designed and constructed by Martin Peterson, then a junior majoring in art, and it memorializes the historical evolution of the University by carrying the seals of the Iowa State Normal School, the Iowa State Teachers College, the State College of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa. The procession continues with the faculty. The heads of the departments come first, led by the chairperson of the faculty, and the chairperson of the Faculty Senate is the marshal for the remaining faculty. When the members of the President's Party have arrived at their proper stations, they rise to honor the entrance of the candidates for degrees. Led by faculty marshals, the candidates enter with candidates for the highest degrees first. The candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, both the Teaching Program and the Liberal Arts Program, enter in five groups, representing each of the four undergraduate colleges and the School of Business. The banners which are carried with the candidates' procession were first used in 1977. They were designed by Bekka Lindstrom, at that time a sophomore majoring in Art. Ms. Lindstrom's explanation of the banner designs accompanies the symbols reproduced at the back of this program. The banners were fashioned by Phillip Elliott, who also designed the stage setting which you see before you. This was first used for the Centennial Commencement in 1976. Students wearing gold cords are those graduating with highest honors, a distinction which requires a grade average of 3.75 (4.00 would be all A's). The academic costumes worn trace their origin to the Middle Ages when long-sleeved hooded gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated stone colleges. Over the centuries, much diversity occurred, and to bring some order, in the United States in 1894 an intercollegiate system of academic costume was agreed on, now adhered to by more than 760 institutions. According to this code, both the styling and colors of the regalia have significance. The design of the gown indicates the degree: the bachelor's is a simple gown with a full sleeve. The master's gown is much like it except for the long sleeve which hangs loose. The doctor's gown is fuller and more elaborate. It has velvet edging and three velvet stripes on the full sleeve. The color of this velvet may be black or in the color appropriate to the degree. Hoods, which are worn over the gowns, are similar for all degrees, although differing slightly in length. The candidates for the bachelor's degrees usually do not wear the hood. The hood has a velvet edging which indicates the area of the degree, and the inside or lining of the hood is satin in the colors of the college or university granting the degree. A partial list of the degree colors to be found on the edge of the hood or the trimming on the doctor's gown is as follows:
