4 Team Player. “After receiving my undergraduate degree, I spent several years working as an accountant. I thought, ‘How do I elevate my career? How do I increase my skill set and make a change in my life?’ An M.B.A. seemed like the next logical step. Through word of mouth, I found out about fellowship opportunities within the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management. From there, I applied to several graduate schools, including Simon. Simon seemed like a great fit and got me involved in civic and social organizations, including the 100 Black Men mentoring program begun by Oprah Winfrey. I also tutored students in African-American history and started Simon’s first formal chapter of the National Black M.B.A. Association. I found that Simon was a real family environment, and I made a lot of great friends there. More important, I learned about the value of teamwork and how everyone needs to contribute to succeed. Today, I’m in a three-year training program with American Express, doing 12-month rotations in areas such as risk control and product groups. It’s given me great exposure to a variety of areas in a global company. Getting my M.B.A. was definitely worth it. Personal Brand. “With a Liberal Arts undergrad degree, I found success in my early marketing career, but realized I would be best served to hone my quantitative skills in business school. I sought a school rich in curriculum and skilled at developing leaders. Simon was the right choice. “There are myriad of ways to solve a problem. Simon hones your ability to think critically. My Simon experience taught me to be a confident decisive decision maker, using robust data, married with qualitative insight, to create value.”

“Simon is a perfect size and its tight knit, supportive community is unique.

I loved the heritage of professors who were not just famous academic

names on doors, but who actually taught us in the classroom. ”

Re-engineering. “After spending a few years as an electrical engineer, I discovered that this particular career offered limited growth opportunities. I came to the conclusion that getting an M.B.A. would indeed be the best solution. I searched the top business schools—particular- ly those that are strong in finance—and quickly chose Simon on the advice of some friends. I have to say that Simon was ‘love at first sight.’ The education at the Simon School, particularly in finance, was best-in-class. The concepts were extremely well taught, the faculty was gifted and highly engaged—the classes were actually fun and I made great friends. The investment in my M.B.A. has paid off tremendously. It pro- vided me with the appropriate skill set to work on Wall Street, thus transforming my career. And even more than 10 years later, I’m still using the skills my Simon professors taught me.”

“Simon is incredibly strong in finance.

It gives you building blocks other schools

Sales, forever, has been a tribal, one-on-one art. But now, combined with marketing and information technology, it’s a scientific and analytical discipline that is an integrated function in a company. One of the best things I developed at Simon was an understanding of the intricacies of how business works. Rather than simply focusing on a single line of business, I can now look across the various functions that comprise a business and see how each works to contribute to the whole.”

“At Oracle, I leverage a lot of my Simon marketing

learning in building our customer service campaigns

and go-to-market strategies.”

8 Success in the Citi. “I was working at M&T Bank in the treasury area, and I found that I really liked it. But I always knew that I needed a better financial understanding to be able to advise larger business clients. Once I decided to go for my M.B.A., I talked with several Simon alums at M&T who said the School was one of the best in the country, with strengths in finance and economics as well as offering an international approach. I have a lot of great memories of Simon. I was head of the Simon Volunteers. We raised over $26,000 for our Secret Santa program through activities that went all through the year. We had silent auctions, service auctions, parties and pledges. At Christmas time, we bought gifts for over 270 kids and had a huge wrapping party with press coverage, live music and food. 9 Real-World Focused. “Having been an entrepreneur as a teenager in Germany, I came to the Simon School because of its clear dedication to and excellence in entrepreneurial education. As a young student, I was always a textbook learner, but at Simon, I learned how to work in groups to solve complex business problems. As managing partner of Ally Management Group, a turnaround management firm, I use the skills I acquired at Simon, every day, to help bring struggling companies out of troubled waters into a safe haven. In fact, the idea for the business came from my time at Simon. My Simon education has helped me tremendously in identifying problems quickly, focusing on the real issues and guiding people through a difficult phase. That link between theory and practice is most important to actually make things applicable in the real world. I’m deeply convinced that the Simon School offers everything that other schools offer and more. During my time there, I co-founded a newspaper called the World According to Simon (WATS), because I really felt that students Martin Hellweg ‘93 needed more of a voice. For a foreign student, that wasn’t the easiest thing to do, but it worked out well, and the support was outstanding. I am proud to M.B.A., Finance, Entrepreneurship say the newspaper still exists today.” Delegate of the Board of Directors, Ally Management Group Zurich, Switzerland

A lot of the professors took part in events outside of school, whether it be one of the many golf outings or happy hours the school hosted. My Simon M.B.A. is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. From a career perspective, it helped me obtain a job as an investment banking associate at the investment firm, Bear, Stearns and then as a finance Cory Fasold ‘05 manager for PepsiCo. The degree also gave me the opportunity to greatly advance my finance and accounting skills as well as learn about M.B.A., Finance and Accounting other areas, such as marketing and operations.
