ISNER, MONFILS, SOCK, JOHNSON AMONG 13 SEEDS IN ROUND OF 16

 DAY 4 PREVIEW: Just three seeds failed to survive the second round at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, ensuring a star-studded line-up for Thursday’s Round of 16 matches. Among the three unseeded players to reach the third round is qualifier , whose reward for taking down No. 10 seed is a Stadium Court showdown with fellow American and No. 5 seed Steve Johnson, who claimed his first ATP title in last month (d. Cuevas).

Both and Marcos Baghdatis beat Australian opposition to book their place in the round of 16. The top seed will be looking to extend his seven-match unbeaten streak against Cyprus’ No. 15 seed Baghdatis, who lost to Isner in three sets when the duo met in the quarter-finals here back in 2013 and in straight sets when they met at Wimbledon last month. Gael Monfils, the No. 2 seed, enters his showdown with No. 16 seed and tournament Borna Coric with a victory in their only previous encounter. On his previous two visits to the Citi Open, the Frenchman has reached the semi-finals in 2007 (l. to Isner) and the final in 2011 (l. to Stepanek). Sam Querrey posted his best run here in 2012, losing in the semi-finals to the eventual champion and his 2016 third-round opponent, (F d. Haas). But Querrey, seeded No. 8 this week, has won his last three encounters with No. 11 seed Dolgopolov and comes into the match in the back of his first quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon, defeating World No. 1 Djokovic in the 3R.

On Grandstand 1, No. 3 seed meets in-form No. 3 seed Ivo Karlovic, fresh from the Newport title victory last week (d. Muller) that saw the 37-year-old become the oldest ATP tournament winner since 1979. Great Britain’s Dan Evans, another of the unseeded players to reach the third round after stunning No. 10 seed , takes on No. 6 seed for a place in the quarter-finals of an ATP event for just the second time in his career (Zagreb 2014, QF d. Kohlschreiber, SF l. to Haas), while Sock is bidding to match last year’s run to the last eight, his tournament-best showing. No. 7 seed and unseeded Malek Jaziri meet for the third time this year, having collected a win apiece during the clay court season, and Benoit Paire, the No. 4 seed, is up against No. 14-seeded Gilles Muller, a two-time finalist in 2016 after runs on the grass at s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Mahut) and Newport (l. to Karlovic).
